Assessment Activity 1 The PE accident book! As part of the Schools Leadership Academy you work very closely with the PE staff at your schooloften helping out with lunchtime coaching sessions and after-school sports clubs. Before one such session you get into the school changing rooms early to find the accident book has been left lying around. You decide to have a quick look at it and are quiet amazed by how many are sport related. Someone has also doodled in the book as well..a sure sign its not the first time its been left out by accident!! Some of the entries are listed below. What you need to do for each one is: Identify what the risk factor was that caused the injury (use the examples discussed in class) Identify if the risk was caused by an extrinsic or intrinsic factor Give a description of the risk factor, for example a general description of what has actually caused (or contributed to) the injury (P1) Entry 1 Bobby Brown suffered a broken left finger when it was trapped in Entry 2 the trampoline he was helping the staff to set up Mary Morgan was late to the PE lesson and had no time to warm up. Entry 3 Jeremy Jones suffered a broken nose when he was punched by a player from the other school in an off the ball incident. The injury was just one of a number of occurrences during the game What is/are the risk factor or factors? Is it/are they extrinsic or intrinsic? Describe Entry 4 the risk factor(s) you have identified. Sue Shuttleworth suffered a bang to the head when the hockey goal collapsed. The goals were old and needed replacing but the PE staff had been too busy to check them over before the practice started What is/are the risk factor or factors? Entry 5 Bruiser Bullock from year 7 received a black eye during the year 11 lunchtime boxing club session. Entry 6 Marsha McDonald badly injured her leg when she slipped on the outside tennis court during lunchtime. It was raining heavily at the time and the surface was slippery. The mid day supervisor on duty was not first aid trained and had to ask for assistance What is/are the risk factor or factors? Is it/are they extrinsic or intrinsic? Describe the risk factor(s) you have identified.

Entry 7 Dwayne Dynamo suffered a blackout during school swimming yesterday having already complained of feeling exhausted earlier in the lesson. Dwayne is not very fit and has a history of epilepsy. He was taken to hospital as a precaution What is/are the risk factor or factors? Is it/are they extrinsic or intrinsic? Describe the risk factor(s) you have identified.

If the approach suggested in the scenario isnt being used, alternative methods could include : An introduction in a coaching manual covering sport injuries An annotated poster that could be displayed in a clubhouse or changing area
