CMU hosts weeklong Veterans Day events

Students and area veterans are recognized and thanked for their service November 01, 2012 Central Michigan University, a veteran-friendly university as announced by GI Jobs and Military Advanced Education, has consistently been a leader in serving Americas military with more than 400 bachelors, masters and doctoral degree programs. Currently playing a role in the education of 1,062 veterans, including 831 global campus students and 231 on-campus students, CMU celebrates service to our country for Veterans Day. This year, CMUs Veterans Resource Center will collaborate with the Student Veterans of America Chapter at CMU for a series of events to celebrate and honor our veterans starting Nov. 6. Events include: CMU screens the critically acclaimed documentary The Welcome The Welcome is a critically acclaimed documentary that offers an intimate view of life after war: the fear, anger and isolation of post-traumatic stress disorder that affects veterans and family members alike. CMU will screen the documentary on campus in Park Library Auditorium Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. for a $1 admission fee. There also will be an off-campus screening of The Welcome at Celebration! Cinema Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. for a $5 admission fee. Veterans Outreach Panel The Veterans Outreach Panel presentation and discussion will take place Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in Park Library Auditorium. Through this event, CMU looks to create an academic environment conducive to learning for all student populations. The Veterans Outreach Panel offers a forum for dialogue between those who are going through or have an interest in this transition. Veteran and nonveteran students, faculty, and community veterans can benefit and contribute. The event is free and open to the public. Issues Day Presentation An Issues Day presentation of Lost in Transition: From Warrior to Scholar will be presented by the Student Veterans of America Chapter of CMU President Marq Hicks Nov. 10 in the Education and Human Services Buildings French Auditorium from 11:10 to 11:50 a.m. Hicks will touch on the educational difficulties for veterans who transition from military to academia. Brandell Volunteer Center at CMU and an integral component of the universitys mission and dedication to promote public service. Veterans Day Concert For Veterans Day, the Central Michigan Area Concert Band will present a veterans concert in Warriner Halls Plachta Auditorium starting at 3 p.m. Nov. 10. Salute our veterans during a program of patriotic music in the entertainment tradition of the community concert band conducted by Claude Lemmer. Admission is free and open to the public. The concert is sponsored by Krapohl FordLincoln and will benefit the Community Cancer Services of Isabella County.
