Assignment/Activity Title Feminism Essay Skill Research

YearFreshmen Portfolio Category Social Awareness

The assignment that I am writing this portfolio reflection on is my Feminism essay. This assignment reflects the remarkable amount of growth that has occurred in my social awareness skills over the course of this school year. This project exemplifies how I have matured in my perception of the world, because I am now able to face and accept hard truths I before found difficult to acknowledge. The most prominent change among the many wrought by this project, I believe to be my growing maturity. This project taught me, how even if it is something I dont wish to write, I have to just settle down and do that writing. Another effect of that maturity is that if there a truth I find hard to accept, or shocking, I have learned to accept the truth and not ignore that piece of information just because I dont like it. This is an important piece for me to include in my portfolio, not only because it had a profound effect on me, but also because I learned a huge amount of shocking things about the inequalities between men and women. This assignment doesnt really fit into my prior knowledge of feminism and the inequalities between men and women. Before doing this essay, I thought that in this day and age, men and women were pretty much equal, but I was mistaken. When I did the research required for this essay, I found out that in some respects they are in fact close, but in some they are extremely imbalanced. An example of some of the shocking knowledge that I gained, was that it turns out, that if a woman and a man have the same job, and work the same hours, the average women gets 69% of what that average man makes. I think that others who read my feminism essay will react with shock, because to them it might seem like it had to me, that there was more gender equality than there actually is. In doing this project, I discovered that I myself have many opinions and ideas on the subject of feminism and equality, all of which agree with what feminists are fighting for, and trying to accomplish. The writing of this essay also made me aware of a fault of mine that I did not know about before, the fact that I find it hard to accept facts when I believe that they are wrong, or reflect poorly on some aspect of society. I learned this because my reluctance to accept things saw in the readings, and then verified, and I knew that I had a problem, when even then I found it astonishing and improbably that such things were true, such ad the 66:100 stat.
