Room 208 Update Week of September 16, 2013 Spring Street School Mrs.

Lubys class

Please let me know if you have any additional questions that werent answered on Curriculum Night. I look forward to hearing from many of you for volunteer opportunities check the TeamLuby blog for more information especially Math Stars/ Olympiads and Grandfriends luncheon. Your child should be reading regularly at least 4 nights weekly (this can include weekends) whether it be a chapter book, kids magazine, or other appropriate reading materials. We will begin Homeworkopology soon hopefully we can get a parent to help out for about 30 minutes each FridayI know last years parent wiould be glad to show you what its all about! The children can win small prizes for completing their homework on a regular basis! If you are out and about and see any inexpensive packages of pencils or bookmarks or other small trinkets, we could use them for our Homeworkopology bucket! Student Council essays and speeches will be introduced on Friday, Sept. 20. All children will write an essay (week of 9-23) why they would be a good SC member. Only those wanting to run will need to read their speeches on Friday, September 27 for the elections. DRAs are just about complete.

Tuesday is Constitution Day we will complete our class constitution and sign it as long as 2/3 of the class agrees to its contents. We have an executive, legislative, and judicial branch. Math Club - Tuesday, 9/17 8 -8:30 - we will on BIG numbers and place value. We will also practice our 11 and 12 tables. School Photos Thurs., 9/19

Language Arts We will introduce our Rigby Literacy by Design reading anthology by reading short passages and monitoring our understanding of what we read. Last week the children read and practiced poems and short passages in small groups and then read them aloud to the class for fluency practiceI think we have some actors in our midst! Writing

Social Studies We will continue with compass rose activities and learning more about map scales. Science - from the desk of Mrs. Liporto This week we will continue to try to determine what the minerals are that make up our mock rocks. So far we know they have red gravel and shells in them, but after breaking them apart we are left with a big pile of dust. We will discuss how we are going to find out what ingredients make up the dust and continue to compare our mock rock to real rocks.

The children will complete their summer reading essays in class and for homework before moving on to a short opinion piece. At the end of the week, we will introduce Student Council essays. Math We will complete the Unit 1 Math Assessments including the Open Response before heading into BIG NUMBERS and place value. *Check out TeamLuby Resources Math Sites! There are many fact sites to choose from especially for fact practice. You may want to look at the one titled Multiplication Practice. EVERYDAY MATH FAMILY LETTERS can be found on-line this year!
