After losing a good number of starters to gradua-
tion, the expectation for the Seneca football team is
one of rebuilding. Just dont tell that to head coach
Bill Fisher.
We will have to work hard, but we will contend
for a conference championship. I consider us in the
race with the other schools in our conference,
Fisher, in his 10th season as head coach, said. We
have a hard-working, confident group.
Last year, Seneca missed the playoffs for the
third straight season, finishing 4-6. Despite not hav-
ing the record they had hoped, Fisher said he saw
something in his team.
We were affected by injuries last season, but
you saw kids rally and fight through the adversity
of that, Fisher said. Everyone was forced to step
up their game, and you hope that you can build on
that. Our goal is to become a program that, even if
we have a down season, its not a losing season.

The township committee voted
to approve a social affair permit
for a beer tent to be allowed as
part of a mud run and camping
event taking place on Sept. 28.
The event, called Rebel Race,
will take place in the residential
area of Saddlebrook Court on the
property of Charles and Gail
Pratt who own and operate the
Saddlebrook Ridge Equestrian
Center. Rebel Race is a 5k and 15k
obstacle race designed for ath-
letes and thrill seekers. From
start to finish, runners will be
barricade climbing, mud crawl-
ing, rope swinging and fire jump-
ing.
The committee scheduled the
meeting to allow itself as well as
the public more time to review
the details of the event. The
Pratts came to the meeting pre-
pared as they presented a dia-
gram of how the event is laid out
and were accompanied by Rebel
Race president Amit Nar.
This is a very controlled and
very organized event, Nar said.
Both Gail and Charles Pratt ad-
dressed concerns the council
raised about parking, noise and
alcohol consumption.
Tickets to buy beer are sold
when they check in. There is no
money in the beer tent so the
amount that can be purchased is
limited. Everyone is asked to
present I.D. no matter how old
they look. The area is fenced in
and security is present so no one
can leave the area with beer or
pass the beer to underage partici-
pants outside of the tent, Gail
said.
The motion passed with a 3-0
vote as committeemen Tim Gim-
bel, Martin Mozitis and Michael
DiCroce voted yes while deputy

Shawnee, like Cherokee have that
model, and we want to emulate
that.
The Golden Eagles strengths
are their young talent and their
work ethic. The lack of experi-
ence and senior leadership may
hold them back. For that leader-
ship, Fisher looks to senior Chase
Vena who plays both offense and
defense.
Chase is a three-year starter
for us and a captain. Hes able to
contribute both as a defensive end
and a tight end. Hes coming off a
solid season in which he had
seven sacks, Fisher said. Were
expecting him to have a strong
season both offensively and de-
fensively.
Fisher kept it simple when
talking about what Seneca has to
do to continue to improve this
season.
We have to focus on playing
mistake-free football, Fisher
said. We always play hard. We
just have to eliminate the mis-
takes.
In their first game, Senecas
performance was drastically dif-
ferent on either side of the ball.
They opened the season Sept. 12
on the road at Moorestown High
School. A raucous crowd and at
times heavy rainfall kept scoring
at a premium. The game was
scoreless for three quarters be-
fore Seneca ultimately fell, 7-0.
The Golden Eagles were rock
solid defensively all night.
Moorestowns lone score came
midway through the fourth quar-
ter on a 45-yard touchdown pass
from Tyreek Robinson to Bran-
don Hammons. That touchdown
was the only points allowed by
Seneca all night.
When youre playing against
the weapons that Moorestown
has and can shut them down for
three and a half quarters, you can
definitely build on something pos-
itive, Fisher said.
Senecas struggles came prima-
rily on the offensive side of the
ball. They fumbled four times, los-
ing two, and threw two intercep-
tions. The driving rain may have
attributed to their ability to hang
onto the ball, but Fisher did not
make excuses.
Offensively, thats on me.
Were inexperienced, and right
now were not playing good of-
fense, so well have to fix some
things there. At least were doing
other things well, Fisher said.

miliar names on the ballot in
early November as both open
committee seats are being run for
unopposed. Incumbents Timothy
Gimbel and Michael DiCroce will
remain in their seats on the town-
ship committee.
The opportunity to run for
committee has closed.
Incumbent Republican Gov.
Christie will be facing Democrat-
ic candidate Barbara Buono as
well.
Additionally, Newark Mayor
Cory Booker, a Democrat, and
state director of the Americans
for Prosperity Steve Lonegan, a
Republican, will be running for
the open state Senate seat in a
special election on Oct. 16.

mayor Ken Long and mayor Sean Gray ab-
stained. Gray cited his home being in close
proximity to the event as his reason for ab-
staining. Long worried about the prece-
dent the committee may be setting by al-
lowing the beer garden, as he asked what
can stop other residents from requesting
one for their own events. To address that
concern, the committee made the permit
contingent on the race as well as the Pratts
meeting several conditions, including fol-
lowing all state liquor license statutes.
The event is to have no more than 1,250
participants and 40 overnight campsites in
use. Nar didnt anticipate that being an
issue as they had 820 participants regis-
tered and 30 campsites reserved last week.
Music and beer sales are limited to take
place only between the hours of 9 a.m.-5
p.m. on Saturday. Nar said the event does-
nt lend itself to being a raucous party at-
mosphere.
The people who participate in this race
are trained athletes and are a part of this
event for the challenge, not the drinking,
Nar said. Once theyve completed their
run, many take a quick rest before heading
home or to their tent.
To further lessen the impact on neigh-
bors, there is to be no on-street parking or
overhead lighting allowed in campsites.
The Pratts maintain that the event will
have no impact on the surrounding com-
munity and will help a greater cause.
This is a huge recruiting event for all
four branches of our military. Proceeds of
the event go to the Wounded Warrior Proj-
ect. The money raised from beer sales will
be donated fully to the Yellow Ribbon
Fund, Gail said. We are only holding this
event because of how much it helps these
efforts. We are not making a cent.

eachers are the backbone of a
school. They are the people
who shape our childrens edu-
cation, who help guide them through
their formative years to bigger and
better things.
A school, or school district, is only
as good as its teachers. Shiny build-
ings, the latest technology, extra-cur-
ricular offerings, a forward-thinking
administration and a supportive com-
munity would be meaningless without
good teachers.
Good teachers are the reason why
our school district is high performing,
which, in turn, is why families move
to our town.
Good teachers are the reason for
success at the next level, too. New Jer-
sey universities scored high in recent
national and regional rankings, and
their teachers are a main reason.
Princeton University was named the
No. 1 university in the nation, accord-
ing to the U.S. News & World Report.
In the North Regional rankings, the
College of New Jersey was No. 5,
Rider University and Rowan Universi-
ty tied for No. 18, and Rutgers Univer-
sity-Camden was No. 24.
Because of their value, teachers de-
serve to be treated well. They deserve
to be thanked. They deserve that apple
the kids bring them. They deserve to
be recognized and honored.
They deserve to be paid fairly, and
thats exactly what is happening lately.
The New Jersey School Boards As-
sociation recently reported that the de-
cline in pay raises is leveling off. For
settled contracts as of last spring, the
average pay increase for teachers was
2.25 percent. Thats slightly less than
the 2.37 percent average increase for
the 2012-2013 school year and a lot less
than the 4.5 percent average of five
years ago, but its still solid and much
higher than the historic lows of the
last few years.
Its good to see the teachers get what
they deserve. They deserve raises
higher than the current 1.4 percent
cost-of-living increase. They deserve to
be taken care of, as long as its not out
of whack with the rest of the working
world.
Its unfortunate that people and
health benefits are one of the biggest
costs of running our local school dis-
trict, and therefore, are one of the
biggest drivers of increased taxes.
But thats not their fault. Teachers
cant be punished for that, and more
importantly, our children cant be pun-
ished for that. We need good teachers.
We need good teachers
And to get good teachers, we have to pay for good teachers
