Postdoctoral Fellowships in Distant Worlds: Munich Graduate School for Ancient Studies

The Graduate School invites applications of young researchers specializing in Classics, Chinese or Indian Studies as well as the Ancient Near East for one of three postdoctoral fellwoship positions. Each of the positions will coordinate a junior research group. The research groups are orientated towards one of the seven focus areas of the School. Successful candidates will conduct an independent research project contributing to one of the seven focus areas, to be chosen by the candidates themselves. In pursuing their research, candidates will be supported by mentors. They will collaborate with doctoral students in an interdisciplinary junior research group and coordinate the activities of that group. They will develop new research perspectives in the field of ancient studies together with the members of the Muenchner Zentrum fuer Antike Welten. In order to apply, candidates will need to have completed their doctorate in the field of ancient studies with outstanding results. Applicants will need to submit a proposal for an independent research project. They should demonstrate their willingness to work in an interdisciplinary context as well as an interest in basic and theoretical questions. They are especially interested in candidates whose research projects relate to the following focus areas: "Organisation of coexistence," "Organisation of exchange," and "Organisation of elites." Conspiracy & Democracy Visiting Fellowships

Visiting Scholar, Visiting Professor, CRASSH, University of Cambridge | Deadline: September 30, 2013

Conspiracy and Democracy Visiting Fellowships are designed to support active researchers in the field to take part in the interdisciplinary research programme, Conspiracy and Democracy, based at CRASSH, University of Cambridge, funded by a 1.58 million Leverhulme Trust Programme Grant, 2013-2017. Visiting Fellowships will be awarded for individuals to spend a period of between two weeks and one term in residence in Cambridge. Visiting Fellows participate in the regular Tuesday evening lectures, Wednesday reading group meetings and other events, and deliver one public lecture during their stay. Applicants to the Visiting Fellowship scheme should have an established record of scholarly or professional excellence in their field. Their work should engage with the project theme of Conspiracy and Democracy. One return economy or standard class air and/or rail fare, workspace, and accommodation are provided for each Visiting Fellow. Integration in Southeast Asia: Trajectories of Inclusion, Dynamics of Exclusion

Centre for History and Economics, Magdalene College, Cambridge | Deadline: September 30, 2013

The Centre for History and Economics at Cambridge invites applications for a 1-year postdoctoral research fellowship in Southeast Asian studies, starting on January 1, 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is in connection with the research programme on Integration in Southeast Asia: Trajectories of Inclusion, Dynamics of Exclusion (SEATIDE) and in particular the work on National and Transnational Exchange of Information. It is based at Magdalene College and funded under the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme. The fellowship is not associated with a fellowship of a Cambridge college, but can be combined with a non-stipendiary college fellowship. The stipend is GBP 28,685 and the position is pensionable. Interdisciplinary East Asian Studies, Post-Doctoral Fellow

Beginning in January 2014, the Interdisciplinary Centre of East Asian Studies (IZO) at Goethe University Frankfurt/Main will launch a new research project Protecting the weak with support from the Volkswagen Foundations initiative Key Issues for Academia and Society. The project investigates how new public claims for the protection of weak groups and interests in contemporary Japan and China are gaining social acceptance against the historical backdrop of East Asian constructions of modernity. Based on four comparative case studies devoted to (1) disaster victims, (2) employee wellbeing, (3) cultural heritage and (4) animal welfare, the project members will analyze the interactive processes of protecting the weak at the intersections of international and domestic spheres (for details, visit www.izo.uni-frankfurt.de/44349637/Protecting-the-Weak). Within the framework of this interdisciplinary research project, the faculties of law (FB01), economics (FB02), social sciences (FB03) and linguistics, cultures, and arts (FB09) at Goethe University are searching for candidates to fill 8 Ph.D./Post Doc Positions subject to receiving funding by VolkswagenStiftung, initially for three years. The successful Post Doc/PhD applicants are expected to investigate one of the topics (1) (4) mentioned above with regard either to Japan or China. Candidates must hold an excellent masters (Post Doc: doctoral) degree or equivalent in Chinese studies, Japanese studies, history, law, economics/management, political sciences, sociology or other relevant disciplines. Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship, Taiwan Literature

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral teaching fellowship in late Qing through early 20th century Chinese literature and culture, with a preference for scholars specializing in Taiwan's literary development during the colonial period. In addition to carrying on research in this area, the successful candidate will be asked to teach three courses each year, at least one of which should be an advanced course or seminar that focuses on the legacy of colonialism in

Taiwan literature and culture in the greater East Asian context. Candidates should be able to demonstrate prior successful teaching experience and must have a Ph.D. in Chinese literature or related field prior to the start of the appointment. This position begins in January 2014, with the possibility of renewal for two additional years. Post Doctoral Research Fellow in Extra-European History (80%)

The Institute of History at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) invites applications for an eighty-percent postdoctoral position (research assistant II) in Extra- European History. The position is affiliated to the chair History of the Modern World (Prof. Dr. Harald Fischer-Tine). It can be extended up to five years and is tenable from February 1st, 2014. Applicants should hold a PhD within an area relevant to the study of modern global history (18th to 20th century). Applications are welcome from scholars with a background in history and/or area studies with a focus on a non-Western region (such as Africa, Middle East, East or South East Asia, Oceania or Latin America). Applicants of English mother tongue (or near-native speakers) with sound knowledge of at least one relevant non-European language such as (Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Urdu etc.) and with teaching experience are given preference. Successful candidates are expected to complete a postdoctoral research project in a field relating to the main research foci of the chair History of the Modern World (i.e. transnational history, the history of knowledge, the history of imperialism/colonialism and postcolonial studies) within the four or five years under contract. Furthermore, they are to design and to teach courses tailored to the ETH student body, and occasionally to support the variegated activities at the chair (developing project applications, editing books, organizing workshops and conferences etc.). Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowships, 2014-2016

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Program for Research in the Humanities | Deadline: October 28, 2013

The Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks to hire two Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellows in the Humanities for two-year appointments to begin Fall 2014. Fellows spend the two-year term in residence at Illinois; conduct research on the proposed project; and teach two courses per year in the appropriate academic department. Fellows also participate in activities related to their research at the IPRH, in the teaching department, and on the Illinois campus. Each Post-Doctoral Fellow gives a public lecture on his or her research. The search for Mellon Fellows is open to scholars in all humanities disciplines, but we seek applicants whose work falls into one of the following broad subject areas: Race and Diaspora Studies, History of Science/Technology, Empire and Colonial Studies, and Memory Studies.

Council on Foreign Relations 2014-2015 International Affairs Fellowship in Japan

Founded in 1997, the International Affairs Fellowship in Japan (IAF-J), sponsored by Hitachi, Ltd., seeks to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between the rising generations of leaders in the United States and Japan. The program provides a selected group of mid-career U.S. citizens the opportunity to expand their professional horizons by spending a period of research or other professional activity in Japan. Fellows are drawn from academia, business, government, media, NGOs, and think tanks. In cooperation with the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the program's sponsor, Hitachi, Ltd., assists fellows in finding suitable host organizations in Japan. CFR awards approximately three to five fellowships annually. The IAF-J is only open to U.S. citizens between the ages of twenty-seven and forty-five. The program is intended primarily for those without substantial prior experience in Japan, although the selection committee has made exceptions when it considered that the fellowship would allow an individual to add a significant new dimension to his or her career. Knowledge of the Japanese language is not a requirement. Interested candidates who meet the program's eligibility requirements can apply online between July 1 and October 31 on an annual basis. Council on Foreign Relations 2014-2015 International Affairs Fellowship in South Korea

In 2010, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) launched the International Affairs Fellowship in South Korea (IAF-SK), sponsored by the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. The program seeks to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between the rising generations of leaders in the United States and South Korea by expanding cultural exchange and enhancing communication between both countries on global issues. The program assists mid-career scholars and professionals from the public and private sectors to advance their analytic capabilities and broaden their foreign policy experience in South Korea. CFR awards several fellowships annually. The IAF-SK is only open to U.S. citizens. Applicants do not have to be Korea specialists, and knowledge of the Korean language is not a requirement. While a PhD is not a requirement, selected fellows generally hold an advanced degree and possess a strong record of work experience as well as a firm grounding in the field of foreign policy. The program does not fund pre- or postdoctoral research, work toward a degree, or the completion of projects for which substantial progress has been made prior to the fellowship period. The duration of the fellowship is between four and twelve months. Interested candidates who meet the program's eligibility requirements must submit an application form available here, a CV, and a proposal (as specified in the application form). Each applicant should arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent assessing the policy relevance of the applicant's proposed project as well as the applicant's qualifications for carrying it out. School of Social Science, Institute for Advanced Study | Deadline: November 1, 2013

Each year, the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, invites about twenty scholars to be in residence for the full academic year to pursue their own research. The School welcomes applications in economics, political science, law, psychology, sociology and anthropology. It encourages social scientific work with an historical and humanistic bent and also entertains applications in history, philosophy, literary criticism, literature and linguistics. Applicants must have a Ph.D. at time of application, and can be a Member in the School only once. Post-Doctoral Fellowship: Islam in Context

Two Year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship, Williams College | Deadline: November 1, 2013

The Department of Religion at Williams College seeks to appoint a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Islam in Context, beginning in the fall of 2014. We seek someone whose expertise in Islam will also address the religious complexities of either Africa, South Asia, or Southeast Asia, in their historical, social, and political contexts. We especially welcome candidates whose teaching and research features post-colonial/decolonizing approaches. The successful candidate will teach one course per semester. Ph.D. must be in hand or expected by September 2014; new Ph.D.s are especially encouraged to apply. The Fellow will be included in the activities of the Religion Department as a regular junior faculty member. He or she will work closely with a faculty mentor; participate in Williams First3 Program; and receive feedback on pedagogical skills and teaching effectiveness through our standard evaluation procedures.
