Tuscarora Council - 90th Anniversary Leaders Guide Fall Camporee, 2013

Welcome & Introduction

Hello fellow Scouter, and welcome to the leaders guide to one of the greatest camporees yet to take place in the Tuscarora Council! This guide is meant to help all units prepare and plan for a memorable weekend that is literally packed to the maximum. Though there is no central theme, this camporee will combine several traditional camporee themes into three main competitions where *Patrols* will be judged and an overall award will be given to the top *Patrol*. Aside from the competition areas and expos, we will have everything you can imagine going on out at Camp T ranging from National Guard and First Responder demonstrations, to a silent & live auction, to the greatest historic collection of Tuscarora memorabilia ever compiled! This is guaranteed to be a weekend no Scout or Scouter will ever forget, so please be sure to read on and REGISTER SOON!!!

Who Should Come?

Everyone! This is a celebration, and everyone in the Tuscarora Council should be here. For several reasons, we want to encourage Troops to use this opportunity to show their feeder Packs what the Boy Scout program is all about and what they have to look forward to! Also, all family and friends (especially ones you know that give to FOS every year) should be invited to come out and see how strong Scouting is in our Council, and watch the boys learning the true purpose of our program.

Judged Camporee Events

In an effort to revive the friendly competition and rivalries that old-school Scouting is so famously known for, there will be three competition areas that *Patrols* need to visit during the day Saturday if they wish to obtain the Councils newest award, to be introduced for the first time at the awards presentation. The main competition areas are as follows: *Cooking Competition and Expo Located in large field beside Dining Hall *Campsite Creations Competition Each unit will participate in their designated camping area *Pioneering Competition and Expo Located in the main camporee field beside BMX track Each of these areas will have multiple challenges for *Patrols* to show off their skills and hopefully take first, but keep in mind that all three area competition judges will be looking for leadership, teamwork, and overall Scout Spirit. *Details for judging and competition rules are at the end of this packet.

The Patch, The Pins, & The Awards

One of the neatest things of this camporee will be the patch! We have designed a puzzle patch consisting of three parts: The Neusiok, Torhunta, and Coharie districts. When combined, each district piece will fit into one large frame to create a complete Tuscarora Council. One piece at check-in, one piece at Saturday evening campfire, and one-piece at check-out. There will be pins given at various locations throughout the weekend that are meant to be placed on the patch pieces. A Scout or Scouter will simply have to participate in a brief activity, such as the History Expo or Flag Retirement, to earn one of these pins. There will be 3 possible pin locations on the entire patch. Finally, the overall awards for

the weekend will be presented after Chapel Service on Sunday. We will be unveiling the newest Council award, to be given for display to the troop with the top patrol and to be brought back to the next Council Camporee.

Parking & Early Arrival

Though not customary, early arrival for this event is highly encouraged. Many people like to come drop trailers and/or cookers prior to the entire troops arrival, that is perfectly fine for this weekend. Simply check in at HQ and you will be free to drive in. Carpool Due to the highly anticipated attendance, we highly encourage condensing vehicles and troops bringing the fewest vehicles possible. Parking will be tight and limited, so please be patient and understand upon arrival. Non-traditional Parking Just because you normally park there, does not mean it may be a parking area during this weekend. Please adhere to all signage and staff guidance in regards to where to park. Shuttle Vans For large groups of campers that have to park in remote lots, we will have 15 passenger shuttle vans available to transport you back to your campsites. This is a perk, not a necessity, so please be courteous and patient if there is a wait.

Campsites
As with Parking, Campsites will also be a mix of traditional and provisional. Areas may be reserved only for those who pre-register and if it is a non-program area for the weekend. Those that are not immediately by a shelter should locate the closest one for emergency purposes. Even provisional campsites should be easily distinguished by the pioneering necessary for the Campsite Competition (i.e. Fences, gateways, etc.)

Auction
During the afternoon on Saturday, the Tuscarora Council will be holding its annual fundraising auction at camp. This is a silent auction immediately followed by a live auction and the funds raised are earmarked for a specific fund. This years auction is raising money for new shower houses that the Council plans to have up and operational before Summer Camp 2014! Every attending unit can earn 1 patch pin if they can bring at least 2 donated items for the auction with a value of $50 or more. Troop item donation is also calculated into their overall scores before the awards presentation on Sunday. Participation is NOT REQUIRED to win the overall competition or complete the patch, but is highly recommended.

General Camp Tuscarora Dos & Donts

DO wear closed-toe shoes, bring helmets for bikers, practice Leave-No-Trace, check at HQ for any questions, have FUN! DO NOT dig for any reason, cut bamboo, ride in the backs of trucks, speed on camp, ride bikes after dark, burn fires directly on ground, leave vehicles in campsites, leave trash bags in campsites

Registration & Fees

Pre-registration - $15 per camper (Campsite preference allowed) Regular Registration - $18 per camper (Effective September 18th) Saturday Day Pass $5 for all Cub Scouts and Visitors The Regular Registration form will be released on September 16th, until then, please use the preregistration form. We understand that registration is higher than what is normally expected, but we are also planning to go above and beyond any event in our 90 year history. We will have some great takeaways, awards, and expos that will be sure to give you your moneys worth. When you think about it, most of us spend more in one trip somewhere one Saturday than you will on this great weekend!!

Cub Specific Information

There will be both morning and afternoon activities for Cubs on Saturday coordinated by Scott Hagler (shagler@bsamail.org). Along with a patch, the Cubs will receive a first-hand observation of the world of Boy Scouting and what they have to look forward to. Although we encourage as much Pack-Troop interaction as possible, there will be no overnight Cub camping at this event. Cubs and their parents/leaders are encouraged to come out at 9:00 AM on Saturday and stay no later than 7:00 PM. All Cubs will meet at 10:00 AM at the amphitheater to begin their day. Meals are not provided throughout this camporee, so please plan accordingly for your Pack or with your Troop.

There will be slideshows and pictures specifically from the Tuscarora Councils legacy and it is sure to be an awesome expo for any Scout or Scouter. This will be a patch pin earning area, so be sure to stop by and check it out! Flag Retirement Ceremony: One of the few organizations that does this properly, the BSA and its members are constantly given American flags that need to be retired. We plan to have an ongoing ceremony throughout the day Saturday to attempt setting a world record and also to help local units properly retire some of their flags. This will be a patch pin earning area as well and we ask you to help us reinforce the reverence and respect due from all of those who plan to participate. All Scouts planning to participate should put preparation emphasis on teamwork, creativity, and proper lashing techniques.

Campsite Creation Competition

The campsite competition will be held in each units campsite. Each troop will receive an overall assessment as a base score for the participating patrols, then individual patrols will be scored on top of that based on how they are organized. Campsites will be judged in many different areas including, but not limited to: pioneering technique (lashings), pioneering creativity (gateways, fences, etc.), organization (uniformity, correct placement, etc.), Scout spirit (troop number, flags flying, etc.), and meeting correct Scouting standards (axe yard, fuel yard, tent placement, etc.).
