Sitios Energization To Start First In Leyte Island-Petilla By Quirico M. Gorpido,Jr. Maasin City, Southern Leyte-The energization (electrification) in sitios will start first in the island of Leyte which comprises currently into two provinces-the Leyte Province and Southern Leyte province-where the vast geothermal power source was located.

This was the disclosure of the Guest of Honor and keynote speaker Carlos Jericho L.Petilla, former third termer Governor of Leyte Province, now the newly-appointed Energy Secretary of the Aquino Administration, during his speech at the provinces 53rd founding day anniversary program recently held at the spacious Capitol playground.

The Energy Secretary reiterated that new sitios in the municipalities of Southern Leyte will be the first to avail of the electrification program and the old ones shall be re-entered for the next batch. The same pattern would probably be implemented in the province of Leyte as soon as the project would start. However, he did not elaborate neither specified the month or year that this important project shall be implemented.

After the completion of the aforesaid project, it is obvious that the neighboring island of Samar, which is part of region 8,shall be given the next attention. That is if the former Ateneo teacher of 5 years will remain as the Energy Secretary of the Aquino Administration until 2016.Can Petilla realized his big plans for the country within the next 3 years? By intuition, three years time for the realization of this big project would not be enough. He needs to remain in the next administration, if Aquinos successor will allow him so, to really complete the project.

He said that electricity is now most needed in the rural areas than in the past decades due to the emergence of modern appliances and gadgets, state of-the-art equipments, computers and TV sets. He said that most residents in the rural areas now have TV sets where they would view their favorite stars/actresses and have fun in watching their favorite idols appearing in serialized telenovelas.

Although the geothermal power in this big Island has already provided additional power source to other places like Cebu, Bohol and part of Luzon with ironically lesser electric rates than the residents of the host Island, still there are numerous sitios in different parts of the archipelago that have no electric power yet.

Nevertheless, the implementation of this energization program in the far-flung areas will be based on the barangays Chief Executives who know the power needs of their respective sitios in

their barangays.

Talking on progress and development, he stressed that these goals cannot be done alone in Southern Leyte.Theres the need of integration and synchronization of moves and programs in 6 provinces of region 8 that are progressive in nature to accomplish such goals, he pointed out.

He further elaborated by saying, some businessmen in Maasin go to Baybay,Leyte for some business activities; while people in the neighboring towns of Matalom,Bato,Hilongos,Hindang and Inopacan all in Leyte province go to Maasin to buy some goods or bring their sick patients to Maasin provincial hospital for treatment/confinement. On the same manner, emergency and serious patients from Maasin will be brought to Tacloban Citys regional hospital that has more modern equipments for either treatment/confinement at the Regional Medical Center.

After his speech, the Mercado brothers who have swapped position via May 13,2013 national elections handed over to the guest speaker a plaque of appreciation. Petilla also expressed his desire to teach at the Southern Leyte State University when he is already out of politics.
