The vision of Phi Kappa Tau is to be recognized as a leadership organization that binds men together and challenges them to improve their campuses and the world. Issue #2 August 2013

has some SeriousFun

Brothers begin their semester off right by raising funds for the SeriousFun Network.
It had not been a full week into school when we, the Brothers of Phi Kappa Tau, started our semester off right by holding our first philanthropic fundraising event, Pie-A-Phi Tau. Pie-A-Phi Tau is a semiannual event held once a semester that really gets the face of Phi Kappa Tau out to the students, and lets people know what we stand for. According to our chapters Philanthropy chairman Steven Steele, this event has been a part of our chapter for as long as he can remember. Due to the brothers hard working efforts, Steele says we were able to raise about $85.

Alumni Date Party

Saturday, September 21st Hunters Ale House 9pm

All funds raised during philanthropic fundraisers are donated to the SeriousFun Network, our fraternities national philanthropy. Phi Kappa Tau alumni and well-known actor Paul Newman founded the SeriousFun Network in 1988 when he had the idea to give kids with serious illnesses the opportunity to kick back and raise a little hell. The SeriousFun Childrens Network provides children with serious illnesses a summer camp experience free of charge. Since Newmans idea, SeriousFun camps have been put up across America, one currently being constructed in Michigan, and has been a national movement since 1988. Fundraising efforts will continue throughout the year including PhryTau, which will be held on November 7th. Steele also says to stay tuned, that he is looking into planning multiple new fundraisers throughout the semester.

Alumni Show Case

Carl graduated from CMU in December of 2003 with BS in Education and minors in history, language arts and middle level education. After graduating, Carl moved down to Charlotte, North Carolina where he taught 7th and 8th grade social studies for 8 years. During that time he received his Masters in School Administration from Queens University of Charlotte. Carl was able to relocate with his wife and two children back to Michigan in August of 2012 as he became an assistant principal at Oxford Middle School in Oxford, Michigan. Carl was initiated into Gamma Lambda in the Spring of 1999 as a member of the Rho class. During his time as an active member he served as the Membership Orientation Officer for a semester, Alumni Relations for a semester, Vice President (twice) and President for one year. Carl says it is wonderful to be back and to be able to serve Gamma Lambda in this new capacity and to fulfill my obligations to our oath as I promised when I was initiated. I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

In the past month the Gamma Lambda Chapter has strived to make many improvements on our house located at 906 S. Main Street. Below are photos of the old, and new chapter room. As a chapter we would personally like to thank Gary Ramsower and the Gamma Lambda Housing Corp (GLHC).

Learning. Leading. Serving.

Gamma Lambda heavily involved in university program to welcome incoming freshman and transfer students

As nearly half of the incoming freshman class move in early and start their journey called college, nine Phi Tau brothers join them. Leadership Safari, founded in 1996, is a 5-day leadership program that allows incoming freshman and transfer students to get acquainted with campus and college life. During this five-day experience we had one brother serve as a core guide, one as a member of C- team, and seven brothers serve as Safari Guides. Core guides not only mentor the Safari Guides, but they also oversee all participant groups and resolve issues there may be. CTeam brother Collin Karcher says my main role throughout the week was to facilitate various activities including the challenge course. Safari Guides lead as the direct mentors to about 11 15 students. Leadership Safari is an excellent way to encourage students to go Greek, and brothers will continue to stay involved in the future.

The Brothers Trust Fund

The Brothers Trust is a group of Phi Kappa Tau undergraduates who have decided to expand their support of their Fraternity by making a financial contribution to the Phi Kappa Tau Foundation. By joining the Brothers Trust, you join your alumni counterparts in supporting Phi Kappa Tau by establishing an early commendable pattern of giving that will help Phi Kappa Tau today and for generations to come.

The Chapter Shield

In honor of the 100-year anniversary of Phi Kappa Tau, the national office built a centennial garden where a shield from each chapter will eventually hang. We at Gamma Lambda would like to challenge our Alumni, Parents, riends, and Active Brothers to donate a minimum of $19.65 in honor of our founding year. It would be great to reach the goal of $1,906 and earn our shield by Gamma Lambdas 50th Anniversary in 2015. If you would like to donate or become a member of the Brothers Trust please follow the steps below. Step 1: Go To www.PhiKappaTau.org Step 2: Hover your mouse over the Foundation Tab Step 3: Click the tab that says, guide to giving Step 4: Click the most appropriate option from
