Death sentence is a capital punishment for offences where the criminal provisions consider such persons as a gross danger or threats to the existence of the society. As the merge of human rights associations, this punishment is strictly opposed for its cruelty and this has been a global debate for some years. In Malaysia, this punishment is proudly held in the law and until today, executions are being held. Many countries have abandoned death sentence and Malaysia should do the same as it is inappropriate, cruel and it does not help the society in any ways. It is inappropriate for today as clearly, it is incongruent with what Malaysia is aiming for. The aim is to be a fully developed country and to be one Malaysia has to fulfil all challenges which one of it is to be a fully caring society (Razak, 2010). Putting an end to ones life does not define caring at all. Even though the punishment has been practised in almost every society, many have abandoned the punishment and more are in favour of abolishing it (Caroline Sculier, 2010). If the policy is as such, then the government is at the same footing as the murderers (Stevenson, 1993). As death penalty is final, those criminals will also be deprived from the opportunity to change and the true causes of crimes will not be figured out (Joseph A. Melusky, 2003). Thus, when justice is hurried, justice is buried too. This clearly shows that we have no mercy and for a society that values human rights, justice and mercy, there should be no death penalty at all (Ragunath Kesavan, 2010). Recently there is a case about death sentence in Malaysia which involves a German man that has been sentenced to death by a Malaysian court after being found guilty of possession of methamphetamine. Under Malaysian law, anyone with more than 50 grams of methamphetamine is considered a trafficker (deutsche Welle, 2013). In My opinion he should he given life prison times sentence. Perhaps he needs to take time to realize his mistakes and maybe turn to a new leaf. Death sentence is not necessary in this case as it does not harm the surroundings and is a little bit to harsh for his case. If the individual commit the same offence after he has been free from prison then death sentence is required as the individual is choosing not to change despite the prison punishment given to him. Few reasons why I think death sentence should be abolish is that is sends the wrong message because why kill people to show killing is wrong. Yes, we want to make sure there is accountability for crime and an effective deterrent in place; however, the death penalty has a message of "You killed one of us, so we'll kill you". The state is actually using a murder to punish someone who committed a murder (Josephine Welsh,

2009). Furthermore the prisoners family must suffer from seeing their
loved one put to death by the state, as well as going through the emotionally-draining appeals process. One victim's innocent family is obviously forced to suffer from a capital murder, but by enforcing a death sentence, you force another family to suffer. Life in prison is a worst punishment and a more effective deterrent. For those of you who don't feel much sympathy for a murderer, keep in mind that death may be too good for them. With a death sentence, the suffering is over in an instant. With life in prison, the pain goes on for decades. Prisoners are confined to a cage and live in an internal environment of rape and violence where they're treated as animals. By looking at it in another perspective, death sentence should be reinstated as it creates another form of crime deterrent. Crime would run rampant as never before if there wasn't some way to deter people from committing the acts. Prison time is an effective deterrent, but with some people, more is needed. Besides that it contributes to the problem of overpopulation in the prison. Prisons across the country face the problem of too many prisoners and not enough space & resources. Each additional prisoner requires a portion of a cell, food, clothing, extra guard time, and so on. When you eliminate the death penalty as an option, it means that prisoner must be housed for life. But in the end of the day justice is served. The most fundamental principle of justice is that the punishment should fit the crime. When someone plans and brutally murders another person, doesn't it make sense that the punishment for the perpetrator also be death?(Joe messerli, 2013)
