Sapa Building System

Striking visual design plays a key role in the creation of transport-related buildings as diverse as public transport hubs and car showrooms. Despite their different functions, these buildings must meet the most stringent safety and security standards. Sapa Building System provides architects and builders with all the necessary knowledge and materials to achieve their ambitious goals.

Recent decades have seen the so-called democratisation of travel. An apparently endless series of inventions and innovations have made it possible for an ever increasing number of people to easily and comfortably cover long distances by land, sea and air. The increased mobility of populations all over the world and the need to manage the streams of people continue to challenge and inspire leading architects. They must create landmark buildings that can strengthen and sometimes even change the personality of cities. These striking designs range from airport terminals and railway stations through to urban transit interchanges and a broad range of other passenger waiting areas. For the construction of modern transport buildings, Sapa Building System is committed to working closely with key specifiers including architects, designers, developers, main contractors, fabricators and specialist installers. Comfort and safety Door closers must be able to cope with high frequency routine operations and emergency situations: in everyday use, they ensure soft, controlled and secure closing. In emergency situations, they ensure that the fire zones are separated reliably, thus saving lives. Door closers from Sapa Building System work purely mechanically with hydraulically damped, stepped gear spring force, which ensures correct functioning under all conditions. The special gearing geometry guarantees easy opening while at the same time producing sufficient closing power to overcome the lock resistance. The Sapa Building System door closer portfolio reflects the complete spectrum of practical demands of modern architecture no matter whether these are defined for aesthetic or functional reasons. They extend from the functional standard of the articulated arm closers through minimalized, aesthetic slide rail closers and coordinator systems to virtually invisible closing solutions integrated into the door leaf.

Thanks to the particular care taken of the design (entrusted to PININFARINA), this product enhances the look of any architectural context.

A landmark in the high-speed rail network connecting Western and Eastern Europe
You can tell by the new Guillemins station that Lige is a major junction on the high-speed rail connections between Western and Eastern Europe. The 32,000 square meter roof, with its aluminium and glass panels supported by steel beams, in particular appeals to the imagination. In view of the importance of Guillemins for the highspeed rail network, the Belgian national rail operator sncb/nmbs decided to completely renew part of the station. This involved demolishing some of the old station and constructing a new wing adjoining the present main building. As a result, an imposing yet elegant structure now graces the station complex in Lige. The design work was entrusted to Santiago Calatrava, a Spanish architect who has many notable achievements to his credit. His creative plans formed the basis for a call for tenders in 2004. The Belgian company Portal won the contract and manufactured, assembled and erected the roof. For extruding and painting the large amounts of aluminium profiles the company was able to call on its long-standing partner Sapa rc Profiles. After consultations with the various parties responsible for the supporting structure and the steel beams, Portals engineers calculated the weights, dimensions, tolerances and stability of the aluminium profiles, as well as the shape of the dies. During this stage of the project, which lasted for six months, Sapa provided technical advice and assistance. In 2005 the assembling of the profiles started. Sapa not only extruded but also painted the profiles before they were assembled. Aluminium profiles ranging from 8 kg to 128 g per running metre were used, amounting to 148 tonnes of aluminium in all. The actual installation of the roof elements followed the pace of the Spanish main contractor who assembled and erected the steel beams of the roof. Each time one of the vaults with its span of 85 metres was completed, a new part of the roof structure could be built on top of the beams. It was essential that the roof elements could compensate for any unevennesses and deviations in the shape of the beams themselves. The top layer of aluminium and glass was only fitted at the very end, after the entire vaulting and all loadbearing structures had been fully completed. Sapa is proud of its contribution to the construction of the new Guillemins station in Lige.

Thitusons Bil AB Stockholm, Sweden Thituson Bil is one of Swedens biggest dealers of Daimler-Chrysler cars (Mercedes, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge) with seven facilities which are strategically situated along the E4 from Ljungby in the south to Segeltorp in the north. The Segeltorp facility is perfectly located by the E4 motorway at the south entrance into Stockholm, just north of the Kungens Kurva area. The building sits in an area of land of 8,000 sqm and comprises a fully-fledged workshop and a showroom where new and used cars are on display. Thituson Bil explicitly asked for a transparent building in which to display their vehicles. The designers suggested a fully glazed faade with a curved platform. The largest portion of the faade looks out on the E4 motorway and opens up the building to the outside. The entire car exhibition hall is flooded with natural light and offers an unobstructed view into the building. The wood-like screens on both ends of the building give it a Nordic feeling and emphasize the form of the building. The cobblestone pavement outside the building connects to the origins of Thituson Bil, that is the region of Smland. A big opening in the floor between the exhibition levels and the fully glazed faade result in an airy and light interior. The building is made of pure materials. The final result is an exclusive car exhibition hall which appeals to a wide circle of customers.

Sapa Building System gets a flying start Down under

Australia and New Zealand may be on the other side of the planet but that hasnt stopped Sapa Building System from entering a new and exciting market. The new Terminal WA at Perth Airport, a key infrastructure project in Australia and New Zealand, presented itself as an ideal opportunity for forging ahead into new territory. The new airport terminal will use both standard and blast mitigation curtain wall systems and is the first successful project secured by the collaboration between Sapa Building System and Faade Directions. Australias total market for extruded aluminium profiles is around 150,000 tonnes per year. Given the fact that the countrys land mass is equal to that of the United States of America and larger than Western Europe, this does present some logistical challenges. Add to this the fact that the Australian building codes and standards are swinging toward more energy efficient building design and operation, and the time was right for Sapa Building System to launch a mixture of thermal break and solid systems. The new $ 120m domestic terminal building at Perth Airport has a single level layout with high ceilings designed to exploit natural light via a glazed faade over 7m high and long banks of roof lights. Sapas blast mitigation curtain wall system provides elegant and effective protection for building occupants on the land side. The use of deep mullion profiles for the vertical curtain wall and roof lights allows free spans without the need to rely on bulky support structures. The consistent and minimal sightline dimensions across all areas of the faade optimise natural light transmission and provide external views from within the building.

Cesria vora Airport Mindelo, Cape Verde The Cesria vora airport building combines many references to Cape Verdean culture and traditions with striking elements of contemporary architecture. Extensive use of new construction materials ensures a high level of functionality and durability. Thanks to the self-cleaning properties and outstanding resistance to pollution of these materials the maintenance costs of the airport building can be kept low. Most of the airports walls were built by hand, using typical Cape Verdean building materials. Technically more advanced building materials had often to be sourced from abroad. That is why highly efficient glazing solutions for doors and faades were supplied by Sapa Building System Portugal. All high tech solutions were harmoniously integrated into the architecture, resulting in an attractive and contemporary looking building offering all amenities and services todays international travellers expect to find in an airport.

Upplands Motor Stockholm, Sweden The point of departure for this project was that the customer, Upplands Motor, wanted a car showroom that would be unparalleled in Sweden. The project started with an analysis of completely different proposals. In the end, the concept of a glazed car showroom was chosen with a protruding roof and large boxes combined with louvres that can be adjusted to follow the course of the sun. For the bottom level, where the workshop is situated, dark granite was chosen, creating a solid base that contrasts with the large glass surfaces. The showroom is located on a steeply slanting plot of land. Three parking lots at different heights, with sedum overgrown slopes in between, create dramatic spaces towards the west. Some 40 metres to the east from the building, there is the E4 motorway to Stockholm. Another basic idea was to use few, but strong design elements in the faades. The combination of large boxes, glass and thick louvres emphasises the size of the building. The gross area is about 16,800 square metres. Circulation inside the showroom and traffic within the parking lots are of fundamental importance for the business, so they have been the subject of several detailed studies. Transparency and a pleasing balance of light were a primary concerns of the architects. The different car brands, Volvo, Ford and Renault, occupy clearly separated parts of the building. The workshop and the reception on the bottom floor are equally well designed as the showrooms on the upper floor. The central part of the building is occupied by a highroof caf with lanterns.

Glass corridors increase the social cohesion and provide a more cheerful feel
Slinge is an over-ground metro station in the south of Rotterdam, between the suburbs of Pendrecht and Zuidwijk at the crossroads of Zuiderparkweg and de Slinge. After a tragic incident, in 2003 discussions took place about the safety of the area and shortly afterwards an overall plan was developed for the improvement of the station and the surrounding public spaces. A vital part of the plan involved the two corridors that connect the metro station with the parking area. The elegant design of the new corridors and the choice of blue glass have created visual contact between people passing in the corridors, on the In the old lay-out there was a lack of social cohesion between the station, the corridors and the parking area. The corridors were dark and dreary, had an uninviting appearance and offered very little in the way of views. There were plenty of unsafe areas both inside and outside. With its extensive vistas and maximum transparency the new design has created visual contact between people passing in the corridors, on the platforms, in the parking area and in the public spaces. The architecture of the corridors offers the best variety of lines and modern materials supplied by Sapa Building System. The elegant design and the choice of transparent materials and colour offer a cheerful contrast with the stark and heavy design of the parking area and the metro station. The glass roofs of the stairwells allow the station users excellent views of the arrival and departure of the trams. Most importantly it means that there is a good view of the parking area which greatly improves the personal security aspect of this area beyond the corridors. In the evening the blue glass has an abstract, almost ethereal quality when the corridors glow and then fade in the light from the passing trams. Combination of cold bent glass, solar cells and aluminium profiles steals the show
When renovating the Central Station in Utrecht the clients primary consideration was an energy saving, environmentally friendly solution. The platform canopy of the station was a joint venture by BRS Building Systems and Sapa Building System who, over a period of a few months, developed an integral glass roof module that consisted of laminated glass into which photovoltaic cells were integrated. Sapa Building System won the extra prize for RenoWhat is so special about the roof module is that the glass was cold bent in an aluminium profile system. This system was designed in such a way that the water drainage system and all necessary cabling would be integrated into it. The solar panels, with no cables visible, effectively form the energy saving and environmentally friendly solution stipulated in the tender. The panels supply the current for the lighting, the escalators and the lifts in the new public transport terminal. Together, the platform canopies generate approximately 85,000 kWh per year. This is comparable with the energy consumed by 25 households. This results in a CO2 reduction of 46 tons per year. Systems provided: Tailor made BIPV glass roof vation Products with the project for the platform canopy at Utrecht Railway Station. The jury praised not only the effective and efficient combination of aluminium profile systems and solar panels on cold bent glass but also had an eye for the provision of water drainage ducts in the profile system. In 2011 this project won The European Aluminium Award for Sustainable Renovation. This a biennial prize which is jointly organized by the Aluminium Centre and the Association of the Metal Window and Faade Industry (VMRG) in the Netherlands, the Aluminium Centre Belgium and the Federation of Aluminium Constructors (FAC) in Belgium.

Genve Aroport Geneva, Switzerland Geneva International Airport, formerly known as Cointrin Airport and officially as Genve Aroport, is located 4 km north west of the city centre and has direct connections to motorways, bus lines and railways. In 1998 the airport underwent considerable expansion. In carrying out this work extensive use was made of materials supplied by Sapa Building System. 3,600 m2 of faades of industrial glazing were installed and an area of 6,400 m2 had coated materials installed. The glass panels used were 44 mm thick, had excellent thermal performance (0.9 Ug) and reduced noise pollution by 43 db. In order to mount the glass panels, T-shape cross-member profiles of 75 mm were required (which at this time did not exist) and vertical profiles of 130 mm. The thermal transmittance coefficient of the profiles amounted to 1.6 uf. These profiles were made to construct 3,800 mm high frames that were then mounted against steel columns by means of plates and crenellated T-sections in order to allow expansion. Tube-like aluminium profiles were used for the faade. Sapa Building System was chosen to supply these materials as well as sixty roof windows measuring 2.4 by 2.4 metres on the basis of their technical presentations. Sapa also scored well with regard to price. But the deciding factor was perhaps the willingness of Sapa Building System to develop various new profiles for this special project.
