Rock music in the 80s

As Nietzsche said: Without music, life would be a mistake. Is that true for real? Our life would be a failure without it? Well.. even if we listen to pop, rock, or blues, when we say music we actually say souls air As we saw in the last issue, when we talk about rock industry, the 60s brought so many crucial artists with a great influence on peoples lifestyle and look. There were promoted values such as peace and love. But, in the 70s, the rock followers have introduced new styles and perceptions. During this time the music was predominanted by psychedelic trends, but in fact, the rock n roll kept its original influences. This time were going to talk about the rock music during the 80s. This period was invaded by names like Metallica, Iron Maden, Nightwish, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Billy Joel, Kid Rock or The Killers. During this period of time, rock music divided into Heartland, Hardcore, Heavy Metal, Post-Punk, Glam Rock, Soft Rock, New Wave and Alternative Rock, but it also kept its original subgenres . Alternative Rock and New Wave In the 80s many alternative-rock bands stepped in. The term alternative rock was coined in the early 1980s to describe rock artists who did not fit into the mainstream genres of the time. Bands like R.E.M. or Janes Addiction, in the US and Pixies or The Cure in the UK didnt have spectacular album sales, but they exerted a considerable influence on the generation of musicians who came of age in the 1980s and ended up breaking through to mainstream success in the 1990s. By the late of the 80s, the alternative scene was pierced by subgeners which have started from Alternative pop, continued with Noise rock, Industrial rock and then with the early Grunge, which had a major impact when bands like Nirvana or Mudhoney made their appearance. The New Wave, also known as Jingle Pop, is a genre of alternative rock that totally rejects the ideas of the skinheads. A part of the New Wave music is represented by the New Romanticism, a music movement created in Londons nightclubs. It was influenced by names like David Bowie and Roxy Music and helped in developing the glam rock. The most popular bands which supported this movement are Duran Duran, Culture Club and Adam and The Ants. Heavy metal, glam metal and thrash Even if it was developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, heavy metal continued to make its presence felt in the 80s with one of its subgenres, Glam metal. It was represented by bands like Poison, Whitesnake or Mtley Cre. Also, thrash, an important branch of this style, developed under the influence of hardcore punk and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal left behind crucial bands like Metallica,

Megadeth, Slayer or Antrax. In the 80s, groups such as Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Def Leppard reenergized the heavy metal genre, by making a more aggressive sound, by reducing its blues influence and by creating faster tempos, things that developed the music of the other bands like Judas Priest or Motrhead. Soft Rock Soft rock, or sometimes named Light rock, is a genre which have roots in the classic rock, often combinet with the folk rock, to compose a softer, more toned-down sound. It was created using acoustic instruments like piano, guitars and sometimes even saxophones. The main themes of this subgenre are love, relationships and life. The most important artists who have developed this genre are Journey, Elton John, Billy Joel, Carol King, Cat Stevens and James Taylor.

Post punk In the 80s, the second generation of post-punk bands made their appearance and have had a big success among the teenagers. Band like The Fall, The Mekons continued to popularize this current. The most successful band was the one founded by Bono, U2, which, at the end of the 80s had become one of the most explosive and seeking band in the world.

Duran Duran got their name from a character in a 1960s film Barbarella. The first Grammy award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental went to Jethro Tull in 1989 for Crest of a Knave. They beat out the heavy favorite Metallica. Because people felt as if the Awards were slightly out of touch with genres, they ended up separating the best Hard Rock and Metal performance award.
