Adi Godrej The co-founder and the managing director of the Godrej Group of companies, Adi Godrej, was born into a business family and left India at the age of 17 to study business management. He obtained both his bachelor's and the master's degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and came back to India to join the family business. Before Adi joined the family business, Godrej was into the manufacturing of locks and soaps. Adi made the management structure more systematic and modernized and initiated the process of improving the standards of the products. Even in the era of controlled economy, the company reached a high standard under the leadership of Adi Godrej. Today, Godrej manufactures a wide range of products spanning from household products to locks, furniture and home appliances. The name itself has become synonymous with quality and commands a lot of faith from the consumers. Adi has made the best possible use of the process of globalisation in the country. The Godrej company has several offices and manufacturing units located in over fifty countries throughout the world. Adi is also a great supporter and well wisher of the World Wildlife Fund. The company has built a huge 150 acre mangrove forests in the township of Vikhroli in Mumbai apart from building a school for the children of the employees. The company has also built a management institute at Hyderabad. Adi Godrej is an Indian industrialist and philanthropist. As of 2011, he is one of the richest Indians with net worth of US$7.3 billion. He is 130 on Forbes List of Billionaires. Also He is the second richest person of Iranian descent in the world after Pallonji Mistry.

Early life Adi Godrej left India at the age of 17 to enroll at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Though he planned to study mechanical engineering, he later on switched to management. Adi was a member of Pi Lambda Phi and lived there his freshman year. Also he joined to AIESEC India. He went on to receive his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

After his return to India, Adi Godrej joined the family business. He modernized and systematized management structures and implemented process improvements. Adi Godrej took the Godrej Group to great height during controlled economy era. After the liberalization process, Adi Godrej restructured company's policies to meet the challenges of globalisation. In the early 2000s, the Group completed a 10-year restructuring process through which each business became a stand-alone company with a CEO/COO from outside the Godrej family. He is also Chairman of Godrej Industries Ltd., Godrej Consumer Products Ltd., Godrej Sara Lee Ltd., Godrej Properties Ltd., Godrej Hershey Ltd., Godrej Hicare Ltd., Nutrine Confectionery Company Ltd., Godrej SCA Hygiene Ltd., Godrej Consumer Products (UK) Ltd., Keyline Brands Ltd. U.K. and Rapidol (Pty) Ltd., South Africa. The Godrej Group is one of Indias largest conglomerates. He married to Parmeshwar & has two daughters, a son and two grandsons.

As a Director of numerous firms, including Godrej & Boyce, Godrej Agrovet, Godrej International and Godrej Global MidEast FZE he is responsible for shaping the long term strategy for these organizations and driving a focus on value creation. Over the last five decades Adi has played an important role in the development of a variety of industries by leading key organizations of trade and commerce as the former Chairman and President of the Indian Soap & Toiletries Makers Association, the Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade, the Solvent Extractors Association of India, the Compound Livestock Feeds Manufacturers Association, the Indo-American Society and as member of the Governing Board of the National Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry. Adi has also participated actively in the field of management education as a former Chairman of the Governing Council of the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, as a former member of the Deans Advisory Council of the MIT Sloan School of Management and the

Wharton Asian Executive Board. Adi is a member of Tau Beta Pi (The Engineering Honor Society) and also serves as a member of the Governing Board of the Indian School of Business. For his contribution to Indian industry Adi has been the recipient of several awards and recognitions including the Rajiv Gandhi Award 2002. Adi received his undergraduate and Masters degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He lives in Mumbai, India. I must admit that it was my grandson who actually instilled the attribute of patience in me, which has helped me significantly to perform better at work. He has taught me things in management that no business school or management book can ever teach." This is an example of his modesty and willingness to learn more. The Group has also helped set up the Confederation of Indian Industry Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Center and the Indian School of Business, both in Hyderabad.Adi is very close to his family, and has both his daughters, Tanya and Nisa, work with him in the management team of Godrej. Whenever time permits, he goes water skiing with his family. Adi likes to take vacations in exotic locations with friends and family.
