BASIS FOR SELECTION OF SA 516 GR 70 There are six (6) groups of materials.

The identification of the group of material suitable for use is based on the Design Metal Temperature (DMT). The Design metal temperature in 0C should be 80C above the average ambient temperature as per API 650. Using an average ambient temperature of 250C, then the DMT = 330C. Per Table fig 4.1 and Table 4.4 of API 650, and Appendix H of Pressure Vessel Design Handbook A 516 Gr 65 and A 516 Gr 70 are the only suitable materials based on the DMT. A 516 Gr 70 is selected based on higher allowable stress capacity as shown on table 5.2 of API 650
