chelation

Toxic Metals and Anti-aging

Part II
By Thomas Rohde, MD, Renew Total Body Wellness Center
ast month, I explained the connection between toxic metals, inflammation, and chronic disease. We have more toxic metals in our bodies than ever before, and toxic metal chelation can play an important role in eliminating or controlling many chronic illnesses. Chelation uses medications or natural products that wrap or chelate around the metals so they are deactivated and eliminated from the body. Testing for Toxic Metals Doctors can screen for metal toxicity using urine and blood tests. Unfortunately 330 days after the exposure there is no longer enough toxin left to accurately measure in the blood. It will not reflect the total body load of toxins, and even well trained medical staff will miss chronic low-level metal overload that results in toxicity. For example, lead stays in the blood for 35 days. It then is absorbed in the soft tissues for about 40 days. Next it is stored in the bone marPage 16 Healthy Cells Magazine Bloomington October 2013

row for three to four years and then in the tough outer layer of the bone for 1620 years. Other toxic metals accumulate in different organs of the body causing a multitude of symptoms. Doctors trained in anti-aging medicine will collect a provoked urine sample to assess the total toxic metal load. Then the patient is given a dose of one or more chelating agents (by mouth or IV) and a urine sample is collected for six hours. The urine samples are sent to a specialty lab to determine the amount of metals stored in the body. Chelation is Helpful If abundant toxic metals are found on a provoked urine test, chelation is the most effective way to remove them from the body. Oral and IV drugs along with supplements to boost liver and colon detoxification can assist to rid your body of these metals. There are also natural binders of toxic metals you can easily purchase and introduce into your daily diet. Chlorella, cilantro, and spirulina bind toxic metals, aiding

your body as the metals are removed naturally. Chelation reduces the damage from metal causing free radical attacks. We know free radicals contribute to inflammation, the root of all degenerative diseases, and this process is helpful to reduce inflammation. In cancer patients, chelation has been helpful as well. In 1980, a 10 year study by Dr. Joseph Bloomer showed a 90 percent reduction in the instances of cancer among patients treated with EDTA chelation. Follow up studies in 1989 showed a 90 percent reduction in cancer deaths, and the patients studied also suffered few myocardial infarctions.

If abundant toxic metals are found on a provoked urine test, chelation is the most effective way to remove them from the body.
In kidney disease patients, Dr. Ja-Liang Lin, in 2003, published research in the New England Journal of Medicine showing patients with renal insufficiency who received chelation did not progress to dialysis over a two year period. The placebo group progressed to dialysis at a much higher rate. In neurological illnesses, doctors have used chelation to remove toxic metals in treating autism, multiple sclerosis, and mild to moder-

ate memory loss. (Advanced Alzheimers patients did not respond to chelation.) There are many published studies focusing on the benefits of chelation with the autism spectrum disorder. The World Chelation Summit was held in Washington D.C. in March 2013, and physicians who have used chelation in their practices for 3040 years were present. These doctors who are successfully utilizing chelation were from all over the world, including Brazil, Ecuador, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Canada, Jakarta, and the U.S. Some have published articles proving that chelation consistently slows the progression of cardiovascular diseases like coronary artery disease and carotid artery disease in close to 90 percent of the patients they treated. They also noticed the positive role chelation plays in a whole range of other organ systems. What About Me? We live in a polluted, toxic world and consequently, we too contain toxins. We must be vigilant to detox and chelate regularly to remove these toxic metals that could contribute to illness. Find a doctor trained in anti-aging medicine to review your past medical history, carefully study your history of personal exposures, review your family history, perform a thorough physical exam and conduct a provoked urine test using chelating medication. Chelation could be the secret to keep you functioning and enjoying life well into old age! If you wish to learn more, visit www.DrRohde.com or call 217-8642700 to make an appointment.
