IT TAKES A COMMUNITY ...

Beginning with our screening of A Place at the Table last spring, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes has branched out in some new and exciting ways. We continue to work to fulfill our missionto feed hungry people and to engage the community in the fight to end hunger and we now find ourselves broadening our definition of community engagement and reaching out with methods that are increasingly collaborative. We are looking beyond just the service aspect of our organization and examining what else we can do to build a hunger-free community. In addition to a record-setting summer of service delivery, made possible by our incredible community and partners, we are striving to make an impact by increasing our advocacy efforts and encouraging community involvement. In August, we worked with the cities of Kalamazoo and Portage, and Kalamazoo County to establish Community Hunger Awareness Montha time to learn more about the food assistance needs of our friends and neighbors. As a part of this initiative, we offered the opportunity to take the SNAP Challenge, to experience the challenges of living on a $4/day food stipendthe average budget of a SNAP recipient. Not only was this intended to raise awareness about the nutritional needs of low-income individuals, but also a means to advocate against potential SNAP cuts in the Farm Bill. Community Hunger Awareness Month was a call to action for our communitya call to help raise awareness about food insecurity and to take the necessary steps to remedy this issue. From local government officials, to the different media outlets who helped us promote our message, to each and every individual who donated time, food or funds during the month of August, this community responded. With Community Hunger Awareness Month behind us, it is up to all of us to keep this momentum going. As we head into our Until Everyone has a Place at the Table annual campaign, we urge you to continue to support our cause. It takes the efforts of an entire community to fight hunger. Fortunately, our community continues to prove that it is an incredible and compassionate one. Visit www.kzoolf.org to learn more about how you can contribute to a hunger-free Kalamazoo County.

KLF provided food assistance to 12,294 individuals in Augustour busiest service month of all time. Are you receiving multiple newsletters? We can take care of that. Contact Laura Winther at 269/488-2617 ext. 206 or laura@kzoolf.org to update your account.

SUMMER REWIND
As the leaves begin to change color and fall from the trees, and Old Man Winter slowly creeps around the corner, it is a perfect time to recap what was a very important summer for Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes: Advocacy: By having August proclaimed Community Hunger Awareness Month in Kalamazoo County, we were able to broaden our involvement in raising awareness of hunger-related issuesincluding potential legislative cuts to the SNAP budgetand urging residents to take action against food insecurity.

Services: KLF broke its summer-service record by offering food assistance to 35,297 local residents, a 5% increase from last year and 65% bump from just five years ago. While this continued growth has become an expectation, the month of July was unexpectedly busy we served 12,325 people, a 13% swell from July of 2012. It is becoming evident that our busiest season for service is growing longer ever year, which is why the charitable support of our community is more important now than ever.

The steps we took this summer are the beginnings of a larger community-wide discussion about the importance of local food security, said KLF Organizational Development Director Phyllis Hepp. Community Support: Local businesses, farms, faith groups and residents generously donated time, money and food to support our cause. Because of your support, we were able to exceed our $50,000 fundraising goal during our Food is Fuel Kids Campaign.

Over the months of June, July and August we provided about half a million pounds of groceries to 11,000 households, which included over 14,000 children, Art Cole, KLF Services Director said. That was enough food for 350,000 meals. Its been a very busy summer for us Every day we strive to help realize our vision of a hunger-free society, and until that day comes, the many contributions of our community are crucial. What does a hunger-free Kalamazoo County look like to you? Make that vision a reality!

We know that we cant accomplish our goals alone, Resource Development & Public Relations Director Jennifer Johnson said. It truly does take the combined efforts of an entire community to ensure food for our neighbors in need.

OFFER A PLACE AT THE TABLE FOR LOCAL FAMILIES

Friends, family, joy and hope are all unmistakable ingredients of both a meal at a dinner table and a hunger-free society. But for more than 37,000 individuals of Kalamazoo County challenged by hunger, these sentiments are replaced by immense uncertainty.

Coming soon is our 2013 annual campaign titled Until Everyone has a Place at the Table. By contributing, you are not only helping provide nourishment for your neighbors in need, but also making an investment in a vibrant and sustainable future for your community. Because of you, KLF was able to provide a place at the table for nearly 500 people per day last yearan alltime record. Because of you we are on pace to assist even more people this year. For every dollar you donate, we can feed an individual breakfast, lunch and dinner for a day. A $100 gift can provide about 300 meals to those in need in our neighborhoods.

YOUNG PHILANTHROPISTS
The Young Philanthropist program is designed as a way to recognize children under the age of 18 when they make a difference by donating food, funds or time to better their community. Introducing younger children to charitable contributions is fun and easy. For instance, you can accept food donations instead of gifts at a birthday party or host a lemonade standboth ideas raise not only donations, but awareness about hunger in our community. This past summer, a group of determined and entrepreneurial youngsters raised over $98 with a lemonade stand, despite overcast skies and charging rains all day. Another child was able to give 120 lbs. of food that was donated by friends and family for his birthday. Older kids can assist in volunteer opportunities like stocking pantry shelves, landscaping, sorting and

repackaging food in our warehouse, or spearheading a food drive at their school. All you have to do is let us know about your youngsters charitable efforts, and your child will receive a Young Philanthropists certificate and can be featured on our Facebook page. The leaders of tomorrow will be a critical catalyst in the shaping of a hungerfree community. For more information about this program, go to www.kzoolf.org and click on the Give Help section.
