Asthma is an allergic condition with paroxysmal attacks of chest distress andshortness
of breath including wheezing and orthopnea. Before the attack, the patient may have some prodromal symptoms such as itching in throat, sneezing, coughing and chest distress.
Differential diagnosis: Patients with asthma caused by wind and cold pathogens may suffer from shortness of breath and chest distress exacerbated by attack of cold, chills, fever, running nose, pink tongue with white and slippery coating, and floating and slow pulse. Patients with asthma caused by wind and heat pathogens may suffer from chest distress, yellow and sticky sputum difficult to spit out, thirst, red tongue with yellow and greasy coating, and rolling and rapid pulse. Patients with excessive phlegm may suffer from profuse and sticky sputum difficult to spit out, chest distress, poor appetite, white and greasy tongue coating, and rolling pulse. Patients with lung deficiency may suffer from shortness of breath, low and weak coughing, dry mouth, red tongue, and thready and weak pulse; and patients with kidney deficiency may suffer from chronic asthma with short inspiration and long expiration, leanness of body, cold limbs, edema of limbs, difficult urination, heart palpitations, pale tongue, and deep and thready pulse. Asthma and shortness of breath in patients with bronchial asthma, asthmatic bronchitis, pneumonia, cardiac asthma, obstructive emphysema and hysteria in modern medicine may be treated by the following methods.
Treatment:
Foot massage: Foot massage is applied to larynx, trachea, vocal cord (48), lung and bronchus (14), lymph nodes (chest, 41), parathyroid gland (13), kidney (22), spleen (34) and adrenal gland (21) reflecting areas (Fig. 36). Foot acupuncture: l) Meridianal acupoints: At Zulinqi (GB 41), Kunlun (BL 60), Zutonggu (BL 66), Yinbai (SP 1), Yongquan (KI 1) and Rangu (KI 2), the reducing technique is applied and the needles are retained for 20 minutes. Warm acupuncture may be applied for patients with wind and cold pathogens, damp pathogens or kidney deficiency. 2) Foot acupoints: At Chest (FA-P 3), Aigen 3 (FA-P 7) and Heart pain (FA-D 8) acupoints, a moderate twisting stimulation is applied and the needles are retained for 20 minutes. Kidney (FA-P 14) acupoint may be added for patients with kidney deficiency, and moxibustion after acupuncture is applied to patients with cold pathogens, turbid phlegm or kidney deficiency.
External application of drugs: 1) Baifan (alum) 30 gm and an adequate amount of wheat flour and vinegar are mixed Asthma Copyri ght TCMDi scovery Net Pl ease contact us i f you want to repri nt the arti cl es to prepare small cakes for overnight application on the central area of both soles. 2) Baifan (alum) 30 gm is mixed with vinegar to prepare a paste for application once a day over the central area of both soles.
Foot bath:
Two eggs are boiled in a decoction of the following herbs: Yuxingcao (houttuynia) 60 gm, Zisuzi (perilla fruit) 30 gin, Wuweizi (magnoliavine fruit) 20 gin, Dilong (dry earthworm) 30 gm and Chenxiang (eagle wood) 10 grn for 30 minutes. The eggs are then eaten and the decoction is used to soak and wash both feet once a night.
