Our goals in the Honors College include giving you the chance to meet interesting and important people, and to learn about and discuss important issues and ideas. Over the next few weeks we're sponsoring or co-sponsoring two key events providing exactly such opportunities. On Thursday, September 26 from 6:00-7:30pm we're hosting a public lecture by Ta-Nehisi Coates entitled "Why Do So Few Blacks Study the Civil War?" (Self Auditorium, Strom Thurmond Institute). Coates is a senior editor at The Atlantic magazine, where he writes a muchcelebrated blog on culture, politics, and social issues. Raised in West Baltimore, he is the author of The Beautiful Struggle, a memoir of his early life in West Baltimore. His lecture--which is part of a series of Honors College events timed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War--promises to be entertaining and enlightening. Next week, on Wednesday, October 2 from 7:00-8:30pm in the Academic Success Center, Room 118, our Thoughts Worth Thinking series resumes with a presentation and discussion led by Fran P. Mainella--the first woman to direct the U.S. National Park Service. Ms. Mainella is currently a member of the faculty of the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management, and is also the co-chair of the U.S. Ply Coalition. Her story is a fascinating one, and sure to spark an interesting conversation. I know it's a busy time of the semester, but give yourself an hour or two to take your mind off classes while expanding your cultural and intellectual horizons. We hope to see you at one or both of these events! - Dr. Lasser
