Introduction
General Section
This display is intended to allow the vehicle operator to monitor vital truck and engine information while the vehicle is in use. It also has the capability to display stored trip information. Whenever possible, the desired display selection should be made prior to operating the vehicle.
Select the desired display prior to moving the vehicle. Do not manipulate the display while the vehicle is moving. This could divert attention from driving efforts and result in personal injury or equipment damage.
E ESN
Features of Cat ID
The Cat ID can display a variety of engine and vehicle information, as described in this section. For detailed operating information see the Operation Section of this manual. It is recommended the driver review the available information as listed in this manual or the Cat ID Screen Map and select, before driving, the most important information for the trip. This will avoid unnecessary distractions while driving in traffic.
Maintenance Information
The last oil and filter change can be entered, allowing the display to indicate when the next oil and filter change is due.
Diagnostic Data
The Cat ID provides diagnostic codes, with both a number, and a brief text explanation. Those codes, indicating a potentially serious engine problem, are displayed automatically by Cat ID. When one of these codes appears, the driver should bring the vehicle to a stop (off the road and out of traffic), because the engine may shutdown within 20 seconds. Refer to Automatically Displayed Diagnostic Codes in the Operation Section, Display Screen Diagnostic Data for a list of these codes.
Theft Deterrent
The Cat ID provides the capability to allow or prevent engine starting, or shut the engine down by entering a four character password into the display when the engine is at idle.
Display Configuration
The display can provide information in either English/Spanish or English/French. Units of measure can be displayed in English (mph, U.S. gallons, psi,F), English-Imperial Gallons (mph, Imperial gallons, psi, F), or Metric (kph, liters, kPa, C). The English/French EEPROM as well as the French or Spanish manuals can be ordered by contacting your local Caterpillar Dealer.

Driver Entry
The Cat ID provides the capability to enter Driver IDs. This allows the ECM to log information for multiple drivers. This is useful in a slip-seat driving application.
State Crossing
The Cat ID allows the user to enter what state they are currently driving in. This allows the ECM to log separate driving records for each state.
Access to Parameters
Access to the available parameters requires an electronic engine to be connected to the SAE J1587 ATA Data Link. The availability of parameters depends upon the engine manufacturer, model year of engine, and ECM Customer Programmable Parameter settings.

The codes listed in the Automatically Displayed Diagnostic Codes chart are automatically displayed any time they are active. The display will continue to show these codes until any key is pressed, or the diagnostic goes from a bad state, to a good state. At this time, the Cat ID will return to the screen that was displayed before the diagnostic event (unless another code is active). The codes are displayed to alert a driver to a potential engine damaging condition. Codes 100 - 11 Very Low Oil Pressure, 111 - 11 Very Low Coolant Level, and 110 - 11 Very High Coolant Temperature indicate the engine is experiencing a serious problem.
NOTICE Depending on truck configuration, the engine may shut down when a potentially serious engine problem diagnostic code becomes active. The operator will be provided a warning indication 20 seconds before engine shutdown.
To avoid a hazardous condition that may cause injury or death, steer the vehicle to a suitable location to stop immediately when the warning code appears.

Installation Procedure
1. Determine and mark the location for the display. The space requirements for the display are 113 mm (4.4 in) wide by 54 mm (2.1 in) high and 76 mm (3.0 in) deep. The dash must be 2.0 to 6.0 mm (.06 to .25 in) thick to allow the bracket to be secured to the back of the display. NOTE: If the dash is more than 6.0 mm (.25 in) thick, the in-dash mounting bracket can be carefully trimmed. 2. Disconnect vehicle batteries. 3. Locate all the wiring connections. The display requires the minimum of a fused key-switched (+)Battery, (-)Battery, ATA Data Link(+), and ATA Data Link(-) for proper operation. An optional fifth connection provides automatic dimming using the dash panel lights. The display requires less than 0.3 amps from the power lines. a. The key-switched (+)Battery and (-)Battery should be available in the cab fuse panel.
NOTICE The dash diagnostic data link has (+)Battery and (-)Battery connections available, but the (+)Battery may be unswitched. Connect the display to key switched battery.
b. The ATA Data Link(+) and ATA Data Link(-) are located behind the dash diagnostic data link or, preferably a two-pin connector, is available (already supplied by the vehicle manufacturer). Do not confuse the ATA Data Link lines with the SAE J1922 Data Link lines. c. The dash dimmer light connection should be accessible from behind the dash. The vehicle dimmer circuit must be a Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) type circuit. Contact the vehicle manufacturer to determine the type of dimmer circuit, and if any of the necessary connections have an easy access point. 4. Connect the key-switched (+)Battery and (-)Battery. Crimp a terminal or wire splice from the display (+)Battery (red wire) to the vehicle key-switched (+)Battery, and from the display (-)Battery (black wire) to the vehicle (-)Battery. 5. After reconnecting the vehicle batteries use a voltmeter and measure the voltage between the key-switched (+)Battery (pin 3, red wire) and (-)Battery (pin 4, black wire) with the key switch ON. The voltage should be 11 to 13.5 volts DC, if properly connected. b. Turn the key OFF and measure the voltage again. It should be zero (0) volts with the key in the OFF position.
NOTICE Displays with part numbers 114-3475, 123-8981, and 128-0941 are 12 volt systems. Do not use 24 volts to power these units this will damage the display unit. All other part numbers are 12 and 24 volt compatible. The part number of the unit is attached on a label to each display.
6. Connect the data link lines. NOTE: The data link(+) line and data link(-) line must be connected to the correct lines or the display will not work. a. Temporarily connect the display to the wiring harness. b. Turn the key switch ON. The display should come on. c. If the display comes on, but indicates there is no communication, turn the key switch OFF, and switch the data link lines. d. If this does not solve the problem, either the connections are insufficient or the lines are connected to the wrong data link connector (possibly the SAE J1922 instead of ATA Data Link).
7. Remove the dash front panel and cut the desired opening for the display. Carefully cut a 112 mm (4.4 in) wide by 53 mm (2.1 in) hole in the dash display. Always measure the width and height of your display before cutting. NOTE: Do not make the hole in the dash too large. Use a file or other means to avoid an over-size hole. The display face (3) holds the display in place against the rear mounting bracket (1). The display face is less than 2.8 mm (.12 in) larger (4) than the display housing (2).

Installation Procedure
1. Determine and mark the location for the display. a. When determining the location for the Cat ID, select one with good visibility. Make sure the location will not interfere with visibility necessary for truck operation. b. The display is approximately 114 mm (4.5 in) wide, up to 76 mm (3.0 in) high (with mounting bracket) and 89 mm (3.5 in) deep. NOTE: The location of the display must be within reach of the wiring harness. 2. Disconnect the vehicles batteries. 3. Locate all the wiring connections. The display requires the minimum of a fused key-switched (+)Battery, (-)Battery, ATA Data Link(+), and ATA Data Link(-) for proper operation. A fifth connection is optional to provide automatic dimming using the vehicle dash panel lights.
