A Car Enthusiast’s Memorial Day
When most people think of Memorial Day celebrations images of flags, hot dogs, and cold drinks are what come to
mind. But for automotive enthusiasts, celebrations tend to include things like Ferraris, canyon driving, and
horsepower. And that is exactly how a group of petrol heads from the Drivenworld.com and Ferrarichat.com forums
celebrated this year.
Arriving to the morning meet-up spot, I was greeted with an amazing gathering of cars from what is probably one of
the most diverse groups of enthusiasts out there. This eclectic group included an array cars from Ferrari, BMW,
Porsche, Mercedes, Nissan, Mazda, and Subaru – including the new limited edition Ferrari Scuderia 16M (1 of only
499 being sold worldwide). But even though these enthusiasts have vastly different tastes in what they drive, they all
shared a love for anything automotive. So after a morning cup of coffee and a short drivers’ meeting, the group
headed to their cars and proceeded to the driver's heaven that is the Santa Monica Mountains.
Turning onto Mulholland Highway, we proceed down the scenic stretch of road past million-dollar houses and horse
ranches. Crossing Las Virgenes Road, we got our first taste of the entertainingly twisty roads that lay ahead. Filled
with decreasing radius, on-camber, and off-camber turns, as well as generous amount of elevation changes,
Mulholland Highway draws people from all over the world to experience its twisting route that can entertain even the
most advanced drivers. And it was those curves that this group was in search of.
After passing by the world-famous motorcycle hangout called “The Rock Store,” we came to a section of Mulholland
that the regulars call “The Snake” because of its endlessly twisting nature and its willingness to “bite” anyone
transiting through that, even for an instant, stopped respecting it. On any given weekend, this road is packed full of
cars, motorcycles, and bicyclists – but that day it was all ours. Upon reaching the top, we filled in the scenic turnout
for a small break and a photo-op before finishing the last section of our drive.
We continued down Mulholland Highway crossing over Kanan Road and stayed on it until we hit the final canyon of
the day. Unlike the non-stop hairpin corners of "The Snake," Encinal Canyon provides a different kind of thrill
treating drivers to big, sweeping curves and beautiful ocean views.
Giving our engines and brakes a chance to cool, we finished the driving portion of the day's events with a cruise down
the Pacific Coast Highway back into Malibu. Pulling into Malibu Colony we parked our cars and immediately started
talking about how amazing the drive was. After a few parting comments from the couple of people that had to leave
early, the rest of us ended the spectacular day with good food and good friends. Heading home after lunch, I couldn't
help but wonder what's in store for our next holiday drive.

Jay Leno and His Jet Powered EcoJet Make a Special Stop for Coffee
Car guys are used to hearing the sounds of roaring American
muscle and high-strung Italian exotics. But on May 31st everyone
was treated to one of the most unique cars to ever set tire in the
parking lot and it was piloted by one of the most well-known car
enthusiasts in the world.
It was actually talk show host, comedian, and certified car nut Jay
Leno at the helm of the turbine-engined EcoJet concept from the
2006 SEMA show. Built as a joint collaboration between GM and
Jay’s cadre of mechanics known as Bad Dog Garage, the EcoJet was
constructed on a modified Corvette Z06 platform utilizing its frame
rails, suspension and brakes, all wrapped in a carbon fiber and
Kevlar body. It is powered by a Honeywell LT-101 turbine engine,
the same engine used in the Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter,
and produces 650 horsepower and 400 ft-lbs of torque at full
throttle. But contrary to what you might think, this car doesn’t have
to pull into an airport to refuel. That’s because it doesn’t run off of
jet fuel, it runs on BioDiesel. This car was built to show automotive
enthusiasts everywhere that horsepower doesn’t necessarily have to
be environmentally unfriendly. To add to this car’s green
credentials it was even painted with a special environmentally
friendly paint formulated by BASF. Continuing with the jet theme,
the EcoJet rolls on specially designed Alcoa wheels designed after
turbine compressor blades that measure 20 inches in the front and
22 inches in the rear and are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires. Photos: Jon Barrett Lateralgphotography.com

Like the iconic ’69 ZL1 Camaro, the new Magna Charger ZLs™ equipped
2010 Camaro features an all-aluminum 500hp engine wrapped in crisp Gen
1-inspired sheet metal. However, that’s where the similarities end. Chevrolet
sold just 69 of the highly coveted ZL1s and virtually none of them ever saw
the street. By contrast, almost anyone can build a Magna Charger ZLs. It’s
as easy as bolting on a new Magna Charger MP 2300 TVS supercharger
system. While the original ZL1 was reported to have more than 500hp and
450ft.lbs. of torque pushing the car to low 13s @ 110mph, the ZLs is even
more powerful, and capable of 12.5s @ 115 mph. What’s really nice is that
you can drive the Magna Charger ZLs every day without a penalty in fuel
mileage or low-speed driveability. Where the original ZL1 was a
cantankerous 8mpg anachronism, the ZLs is smooth, quiet and clean –
equally ready to deliver top EPA mileage figures or smoke the tires in any
gear – your choice!
The Magna Charger ZLs system comes complete with a new, patented
high-velocity aluminum intake manifold, integral water-to-air intercooler, and
all necessary brackets, connectors, hardware and any needed specialized
tools. The supercharger has a self-contained lubrication system that is
maintenance-free. Calibration is included with a handheld computer
programmer that re-programs the factory ECU and stores the original
calibration for possible future use. A full instruction manual with color photos
makes the step-by-step installation process easy to follow.
