1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Meaning of open source software :

Open source software (OSS) began as a marketing campaign for free software. OSS can be defined as computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. This permits users to use, change , and

improve the software is the most prominent example of open source software development and often compared to user-generated content.

1.2 Meaning of Hardware:

Hardware is a general term that refers to the physical artifacts of a technology. It may also mean physical components of a computer system, in the form of computer hardware.

1.3 Meaning of Software:

Software is program which consists of a set of instruction that tell the computer how to perform a specific operation. Software is the general term for information thats recorded onto some kind of medium. Most of the software on your computer comes in the form of programs. A program consists of instruction that tell that computer what to do, how to behave. A computer if just a machine with no special benefits without software.

2.0 THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS) 2.1 Meaning of open source OS:
An open source operating system is the software component of a computer system that is responsible for the management and coordination of activities and the sharing if the resource of the computer. The operating system (OS) acts as a host for application program that are run the machine. As a host, one of the purpose of an operating program from having to manage these details and makes it easier to write applications. Almost all computer, and even modern video game consoles, use an operating system of some type. See also Computer system architecture.

Operating system is the software designed to control the hardware of a special data-processing system in order to allow users and application programs to make use of it. The operating system sets the standard for all application programs that run in the computer. Application talk to the operating system for all user interface and file management operations. Also called an executive or supervisor, an operation system performs the following function.

2.2 Example of Open Source System Fedora 14

Fedora 14,a new version of the leading edge, free and open-source operating system with many innovative features, has been released. Fedora 14, code name Laughlin . Fedora 14 loads and saves images faster with libjpeg-turbo; Spice (Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environment) with an enhanced remote desktop experience; support for D, a system programming language combining the power and high performance of C and C++ with the programmer productivity of modern languages such as Ruby and Python; GNUStep , a GUI framework based of the Objective- C programming language; easy migration of XEN virtual machines to KVM virtual machines with virt-v2v.

Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone features a new user interface, based upon Microsoft windows Phone 7 design systems, codenamed Metro. The home screen, called the Start screen, is made up of Tile. Tiles are links to application, features, functions, and individual item. Users can add, rearrange, or remove Tiles. Tiles are dynamic and update in real

time-for example, the tile for an email account would display the number of unread messages or a tile could display a live update of the weather. Several features of Windows Phone 7 are organized into hubs, which combine local and online content via Windows Phone 7s integration with popular social networks such as Facebook and Windows Live. For example, the Picture hub shows photos captured with the devices camera and the users Facebook photo albums, and the People hub shows contacts aggregated from multiple source including Windows Live, Facebook, and Email. The other built-in hubs are Music and Video, games, Windows Phone Marketplace, and Microsoft Office. Windows Phone 7 uses multi-touch technology. The user may choose a light theme instead, and can also choose from several accent colors. User interface elements such as tiles are shown in the users chosen color. Third0party application can be automatically themed with these colors.

3.0 Latest Open Source Application Software 3.1 Meaning of Open Source Application Software
It includes all programs that perform specific tasks and enables a user to display and interact with text, image, and other information typically located on a webpage at a website on the World Wide Web, In this context the term application refers to both the application software and its implementation. Application software is a defined subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of a computer directly to a task that the user wishes to perform.

3.2 Example of Open Source Application Software

Window Internet Explorer 9

Internet Explorer 9 is the new edition of Microsofts hugely popular web browser. Building on the success of previous editions of IE with new features and a new look, Microsoft has high hopes for Internet Explorer 9. The first thing youll notice about Internet Explorer 9 is an overhauled interface. Making the most of the transparent graphical style available in Windows 7 and newer edition of Window Vista, IE 9 looks sleek, smart and simpler than ever before. Among the new features included in Internet Explorer 9 are better integration with the Windows operating system and a seriously beefed-up security. IE 9 also lets you pin websites to the Superbar and allows you to bookmark your favorite websites as application in your OS. The new Performance Advisor add-on identifies add-ons that are slowing Internet Explorer down (a feature badly needed in Mozilla Firefox). Internet Explorer 9 also offers improved speed and performance, as well as better compliance with web standards and new technologies. IE 9 features decent support for HTML 5, and now finishes the Acid 3 test with a near-perfect 95/100. New features like hang recovery and InPrivate Filtering provide Internet Explorer a stable and more secure web experience than most other browsers. It released on September 15, 2010.

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox 3.6 is built on Mozillas Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering platform, which has been under development since early 2009 and contains many improvements for web developers, add-on developers, and users. This version is also faster and more responsive than previous versions and has been optimized to run on small device operating systems such as Maemo. It released on January 2010 Notable Firefox 3.6 features include: Available in more than 71 languages. Protection from out-of-date plugins to keep users safer as they browse. Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness, and startup time.

4.0 The Latest Development in ICT 4.1) Hardware Earphone CXC 700 Noise

The noise cancellation is built into a compartment that rests along the earphones cable, and it operates under three user-selectable modes. Mode 1 attacks intense low-frequency noise, like rumble from airplane engines or trains. Mode 2 aims at the middle of the frequency range. Mode 3 combines the other two modes, leaving high frequencies-which not only are needed to understand conversations, but rarely include consistent, everyday noise-alone and focusing on eliminating the hums and whirs of modern life present in the lower-to-mid frequency realms. Sennheiser has long been respected as a purveyor of audio excellence in both headphones and earphones-from consumer model to professional, studio-grade gear. Look for the CXC 700 in early 2011, and for a review around that time on PCMag.com. In addition to the CXC 700, Sennheiser also announced two more co-branded earphone pairs with Adidas, although these pairs, part of the adidas Original series, seem less sports-focused than last years exercise-focused models, and more driven towards music lovers. Details were scarce, but Sennheiser will also release another iPhone-geared earphone model this year: the CX 980i. The high-end in-canal earphones have an in-line microphone, but no word yet on pricing or availability. It released on 01.06.2010.

5.0 Pervasive Computing 5.1) Meaning of Pervasive Computing

Pervasive computing is the trend towards increasingly ubiquitous, connected computing devices in the environment, a trend being brought about by a convergence of advanced electronic and particularly, wireless technologies and the Internet. Pervasive computing refers to visionary new ways of applying information and communication technologies (ICT) to our daily lives.

5.2) Example of Pervasive Computing

Here are some example of information appliances. The list includes many things you wouldnt think of as computers, which is just the point: successful computers wont be thought of as computers. So, you wont notice you are using lots of them. ATM Machines Money delivery through a computer network. Cash Registers Calculators that are used in checkout counters Navigation Systems Direction-giving devices and maps built into cars Digital Cameras Images just like those from standard cameras Electric Instruments Electronic simulation of guitars, keyboards, drums

Calculators A service people who still use calculators even though they are sitting in front of a computer

6.0 CONCLUSION
To state the obvious, open source software offers opportunities and disadvantages. The opportunities include having a vast pool of software talent with access to, and the ability to improve upon, open source software; and the ability to access and utilize software that could be of greats use but whose acquisition might otherwise have been cost prohibitive. The disadvantages include that may have problem not readily apparent and the risk of utilizing software that infringes intellectual property rights. The terms of various open source licenses may pose other inherent problems that may not be apparent to those not skilled in the legal nuances of licenses.
