Valjean discovers Fantine close to death and agrees to raise Cosette as his own. Blue skies ahead for ELO fans

Enthusiasm for tribute bands continues to spread across the region, with more people keen to relive the music from the era they grew up in. Entertainment reporter SELINA MAYCOCK speaks to the musical director of the ELO Experience, Scunthorpes Steve Hemsley, to see whether copying the original stars always works
Hemsley, 50, lives in Scunthorpe. Speaking about the origins of ELO, the band that paved the way for a new sound, he said: In the original days, it was quite an unfamiliar sound. The Beatles touched on strings, then ELO and Roy Wood had this idea of bringing orchestral instruments into the forefront. Roy Wood didnt stay with them. He left to join Wizzard and Jeff Lynne took it on and they became so big with the sound. They had a history of shows in the 1970s and 1980s and massive sell-out tours. When we formed the band, there was nobody doing an ELO tribute. Steve had always been friends with the people who went on to form the tribute band before he came aboard and they all hail from the Humber region. But when the band needed a new keyboardist in 2006, Steve was asked if he would like to join. He became musical director and the band resumed as a five-piece, with Steve playing keyboard and synthesiser. The difference back then was getting the work, said Steve. Trying to get a new band into theatres is very difficult because theatres want tried and tested bands. If we played pubs, some theatres wouldnt want us, so we had to choose venues very carefully. But some theatres took chances and after two to three years we got our name out there and people started talking about us. To be in most successful tribute bands, you have to sing like the original artists and sometimes look like the original members, but for the ELO Experience the music quality speaks volumes. We have never looked like the original ELO with the big hair or flares. We were initially just five guys. But when we started doing theatre shows, we added a bit extra with our lead singer Andy donning a wig with curly hair. As far as the original look goes, Andy is the only member who emulates it. We did have some suits made and some flared trousers, but weve never had any of the wild beards. Playing in an ELO tribute band is a childhood dream for Steve, as he was a fan of the band when he was younger. We were all fans of ELO, he said. Our lead singer dabbled with setting up a tribute band in his 30s, but it didnt work out so he came back to it 20 years later. Likewise, the musical dream was a long-term project for Steve. He started his career as an engineer working for British Aerospace and in his 20s his music career took off when he married his wife and moved to Jersey. He returned 10 years later and they performed as a musical duo called Rhapsody. My wife still sings in The Mike Brown Band. Its the band I was in before I joined the ELO Experience. The two bands are worlds apart. I do more travelling, spending a lot of time on the road, whereas my wifes band is a local one. My favourite place to visit on tour, if we have a overnight stay, is on the south coast. Last year, we did some work in Jersey so it was nice to go back there for nostalgic reasons. It doesnt feel like work when youre on stage, but the time travelling is the hardest part of the job and it is something people dont really see. So I love playing near home because its not far to get home afterwards. Hull is always our biggest selling gig because were all from the area. The ELO Experience has tragically lost some members over the years, but its current line-up has remained the same since 2009. The band line-up includes two cellists, along with the three guitarists, a keyboard player and drummer. Strings and vocals are key features in the arrangements, with many songs requiring four-part har monies. With the original ELO member Jeff Lynne living in Los Angeles, the floor is open for the ELO Experience to deliver the music fans want. And even though the band is not the real McCoy, fans still ask them for their autographs. He said: That came as quite a shock to me but obviously people like us enough to want our autograph. To book tickets for the gig (17), call 01482 300 300. The show starts at 7.30pm.

E ALL have childhood memories of watching our favourite bands perform their latest hits on Top of the Pops. And for those lucky enough to get tickets to a concert to see them perform live, the experience is a dream come true. But what happens when your boy band is now a man band, with some of its original members no longer present and those that are have gone into touring retirement? Well, for fans of the original 1970s/1980s sensations that were the Electronic Light Orchestra (ELO), there is a new wave of this music phenomenon gracing theatres in the form of the ELO Experience. The Experience was set up in 2005, when it was believed to be the only ELO tribute band of its kind. The bands musical director, Steve
