FOUR-STAR: Rothay Garden Hotel, Grasmere LOVE of lakes will have you spoilt for choice in the Lake District. For a short break with fantastic scenery all around is guaranteed with a visit to Grasmere. Embedded between Windermere and Keswick, Grasmere is within reach of all the great spots in the Lakes. We stayed at Rothay Garden, one of the regions newest 4-star hotels. It emerged last year from a 1 million refurbishment of bedrooms and suites, and the creation of a new Garden Restaurant and Riverside Spa. Located in the quaint Grasmere region, it is in easy walking distance of shops and cafes. Our room had two balconies. One overlooking a running stream, the other the gardens and the spa. The room was beautifully decorated with lavish fabrics and cosy furniture, making it the perfect escape. We dined in the hotels Garden Restaurant for two nights the conservatory style dining area was stylishly transformed into a beautiful cove overlooking the grounds, with the added warmth to keep you cosy on even the most blustery of a spring night. The menu was seasonal yet splendid, pushing our taste buds to try new dishes. I sampled the venison burger as my starter, with quails egg. For main I had the beef and for dessert a chocolate creme brulee. The following night I had ham hock starter, followed by tender pieces of lamb shoulder, loin, and cutlets with vegetables followed by sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. Staff were very pleasant throughout our stay and were keen to make conversation. The spa, complete with aromatherapy room, sauna, jacuzzi over looking the hillside and water jets kept us occupied for a couple of

hours, but if youre looking to spend a little longer there, you might want to take a good look and lay on the heated tiled loungers overlooking the grounds. And if youve got tired feet from walking, then massage them on the reflexology floor. The location of the hotel makes all the attractions of the Lake District within a short driving distance many under 30 miles. We drove to Bowness on Windermere to visit the Beatrix Potter Museum. As a child we have all come across the adventures of Peter Rabbit, and the loveable character will hop into your heart once again with this interactive museum which takes you back to the origins of all the tales. The moving displays throughout will capture your imagination and bring the much-loved tales back to life. After a short scenic drive to Keswick, we visited the Cumberland Pencil Museum. If youve ever loved sharpening pencils as a kid then this is a place to visit. With the complete history of the pencil for which graphite was founded in Keswick 400 years ago under one roof, you cant help but get the buzz back for lead and drawing. The museum boasts the Guinness World Record for the worlds longest colour pencil measuring a whopping 9.71 metres and it wouldnt be the same seeing it anywhere else. A drive along a winding road led us from Grasmere to Coniston Water, where we planned to hire a motor boat. Severe winds meant the boats were out of action but the Coniston Launch was bracing the choppy waves so we had a 45-minute cruise. Opting for the more thrilling ride, I sat outside with my waterproofs sheltering me from the spray as the boat cut through the lake. The Lake District is a beautiful part of England that not only inspires you to explore its offerings but also step out into the great outdoors. So if youre looking for that peaceful break filled with adventure then Id definitely recommend the Lake District it will make you feel like you can walk on water.
