How to Teach Students Who Don't Look Like You: Culturally Relevant Teaching Strategies (Bonnie Davis, Ph. D.) This interactive presentation focuses on examining your cultural lens and learning strategies to improve the academic achievement of ALL students. Dr. Davis facilitates a lively, practical workshop examining how to create schools of "cultural consideration" with an emphasis on students "who don't look like you." Beginning with an examination of one's cultural lens, Bonnie leads participants through reflection and collegial conversation, using The Equity Framework to guide the cultural journey. Using brain-based instructional strategies, Bonnie explores how to create a classroom community that honors every voice. Participants practice her research-based strategies to engage all students to improve their academic achievement across the disciplines. Participants should be prepared to talk, read, write, and learn! During the presentation, participants identify the strategies modeled by the presenter, reflect upon their educational practices, and practice culturally considerate teaching strategies to implement in their classrooms and their schools. This workshop is based on material in Dr. Davis' books, How to Teach Students Who Don't Look Like You: Culturally Relevant Teaching Strategies; The Biracial and Multiracial Student Experience: A Journey to Racial Literacy; Creating Culturally Considerate Schools: Educating Without Bias; and the Equity 101 Book Series. B-A-R: Building Authentic Realities for LOTE (Pam Kaatz) "While it is true that we cannot fully reproduce the reality of the childhood linguistic experience, we can imitate the essence of first language acquisition by -providing the context necessary for comprehension -allowing students to show comprehension through actions and ""safe"" utterances -making language production the logical outcome of the situation Many communication-based activities are used to practice or apply previously learned lexical and grammatical concepts. In B-A-R activities, however, communication is not merely a follow-up activity but the vehicle by which the initial learning takes place."
