News From Room 207

Week of 9/30/13
Congratulations to Madeline Duke and Bobby Rodolakis for being chosen as our two student council representatives for the 2013-2014 school year. This year, we also elected Eile Purdy and Konur Berkman to be Greeter Leaders. They will coordinate our front door greeters throughout the year. I would also like to applaud all of the students that prepared speeches and presented in front of the class. Every child was well-prepared and showed great courage and poise while presenting. Math Club will begin Tuesday morning promptly at 8:00AM. Math Club provides further opportunities for your children to practice previously taught skills. Please let me know if your child is planning on attending. Monthly reading calendars should be added up, signed by an adult and turned in as part of homework on Tuesday morning. Please be sure the total number of minutes read is written at the top of the calendar and then circled. Volunteers should begin this week. Please let me know if you are not able to make your volunteer time.

Quote of the Week

10/9 Emily D

ELA
Our focus this week will be on creating images in our minds as we read to better understand what the author is telling us. In writing, we will switch our focus from opinion writing to narrative writing as we explore what writers need to include in a powerful opening.

Math
We will begin Unit 3. Students need to practice math facts nightly. Please visit www.everydaymathonline.com as often as possible

Read Aloud
We have started reading one of my favorite books, A Week in The Woods by Andrew Clements. Mark initially has no interest in making friends at his new school in Whitson, N.H., where his constantly traveling parents have just renovated and enlarged a 1798 farmhouse. His science teacher, Mr. Maxwell, passes judgment on Mark before the boy finally decides to give the school a chance. Mr. Maxwell organizes a week in a wooded state park for the students and then the adventure begins.

Social Studies
Last week the children learned how different mapping tools can teach them about geography and the world. This week, we will focus on directionality and the compass rose.

Science
We observed and described 4 minerals last week. Three of the minerals were white and our next challenge will be to determine which mineral is the hardest by performing a scratch test.
