(!Congre5'5' of tbe Wnitel:l ~tate5' SUBCOMMITTEES:
AGRICULTURE, AURAL DEVELOPMENT,
I am requesting funding for Hoops Express, Inc.,' Helping Our People Excel (HOPE)
Project in fiscal year 2010.
The HOPE (Helping Our People Excel) Project is geared to meeting the needs of at-risk
youth age 12-17. This funding will be spent on staff who will have direct contact with at-
risk youth providing mentoring opportunities, homework help and tutoring, preparing
youth to be competent employees, and providing opportunities for youth to improve
social conduct. The program provides homework help and tutoring in conjunction with
the Mt. St. Mary Graduate School of Education. Enrolled youth enter the program at or
below grade level, have high truancy rates, and often experience disciplinary problems.
To help broaden the aspirations of our participants, they are paired with a Life Coach
whose responsibility is to work the individual to create a short and long tenn goal plan
and work with them to inlplement the changes necessary to meet their goals. TIle Life
Coaches also work with participant to create a set of experiences they may not otherwise
have remaining solely within their cOl1ll1lunity.
I certify that neither I nor my spouse has any financial interest in this project. TIlanlC you
for your consideration of my request.
Sincerely,
W~~:;~
