Pan-Asian cuisine Location | The Maldives is an archipelago of 26 natural atolls formed by 1,190 coral reef islands. Spread over 90,000 square kilometres, it lies in the Indian Ocean just across the equator and is situated to the south of India and west of Sri Lanka. Out of the numerous islands, only 200 are inhabited, with 88 islands developed as exclusive resort islands. Though isolated in its location this haven of palm trees, white sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters is easily accessible by air from anywhere in South-East Asia, the Middle-East and Europe. Seasons | The weather in the Maldives is usually pleasant with balmy mornings, sunlit days, iridescent sunsets and breezy nights. With the average temperature at about 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year, Maldives has two distinct seasons; the dry northeast monsoon from December to March and the wet southwest monsoon from May to November. April is a transitional period between the two seasons with occasional thunderstorms that offer a welcome respite from the sun. Destinations | A fun twenty-minute speedboat trip away from the resort is the capital island of Male. Unique in every way, this 2 km long and 1 km wide island, with a population of 70,000, is the busiest in the Maldives and one of the most densely populated capital cities in the world. With a remarkable mixture of modernism and traditional Maldivian culture, Male is also the most popular place for shopping and hosts a wide range of shops that sell every imaginable good from general merchandises to handicraft souvenirs and antiques.
