loss in
state aid
By NICK COHEN
The Mt. Laurel Sun
Mt. Laurel scored 90 percent on
the states annual Best Practice
questionnaire, which ensures it
will not see a loss in state aid for
the upcoming fiscal year.
The state created the Best Prac-
tices checklist in an effort to im-
prove transparency and account-
ability at all government levels.
The checklist acts as a tool for
municipal officials to use so they
can better operate local govern-
ment.
Many factors determine a
townships ability to qualify,
township clerk Meredith Tom-
czyk said. Mt. Laurel benefitted
from having a shared services
agreement with other municipali-
ties as well as partaking in the
state health benefits program.
Municipalities scoring below 80
percent receive cuts in state aid.
Tomczyk said the main con-
tributing factor for the township
not having a perfect score was the
fact it had not revised the town-

The third-grade students of
Springville Elementary School
were treated to an interactive
reading by a Mt. Laurel author
last Thursday. If laughter and
smiles were any indicators, the
event was quite a success and will
lead to more readings in the fu-
ture.
S.F. Hochman, Mt. Laurel resi-
dent and friend of third-grade
teacher Tom Bettner, is no
stranger to the district as he has
done readings in other district
schools as well as neighboring
towns in years past. His books
have become a hit with the local
community in part because they
have been written and illustrated
by students in the community.
After decades of writing
speeches and video scripts for in-
ternational motivational speak-
ers and Fortune 500 companies,
Hochman plunged into writing
for kids, with kids. Hochman
wouldnt refer to it as a plunge,
more of a natural progression
spanning close to three decades of
volunteering in schools.

ew Jersey residents are rich.
Really rich. Were the second-
richest state in the nation, be-
hind only those people two states to
the south in Maryland.
The median household income for
New Jersey residents is $69,667. Thats
pretty good news.
The bad news: That number is
boosted in large part by the states
ridiculously wealthy families. More
than 11 percent of families here have
an income of more than $200,000 per
year.
On the surface, the Garden States
ranking of No. 2 on the list of wealthi-
est states, compiled by 24/7 Wall St., is
a positive sign to our economys health
and future prospects. Dig deeper,
though, and youll see a much differ-
ent story.
New Jerseys unemployment rate
was 9.5 percent in 2012, one of the
worst in the country. The national av-
erage was 8.1 percent. The state above
us on the rich list, Maryland, had a
low unemployment rate of 6.8 percent,
for example. Even worse, the number
of people on food stamps increased
from 8 percent in 2011 to 9.3 percent in
2012.
That is not good news.
Still, our outlook is getting better. As
of August, New Jerseys unemploy-
ment rate was 8.5 percent, according
to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Thats the lowest mark since March
2009, when it was 8.3 percent. It also
closed the gap between the national
unemployment rate, which sat at 7.3
percent in August.
But New Jersey needs to help busi-
nesses create more jobs. While the
state gained 60,300 jobs in the past 12
months, it lost 1,500 in August. From
July to August, more than 12,000 work-
ers stopped looking for work and left
the workforce.
Thats not good, either.
Gov. Christie recently revamped the
states business tax breaks in an effort
to add more jobs, but how effective
that will be might take time to tell. Its
a good first step, as any incentive to
add more jobs is a positive step, as
long as the state isnt digging a deeper
debt hole.
The bottom line is our workers need
more jobs because the fact is that,
while a small percentage of New Jer-
sey families are rich, most are still
struggling.
in our opinion

Your thoughts
What, if anything, should our state
government do to incentivize businesses
to add more jobs?

Residents raised concerns
about vandalism and illegal activ-
ities taking place at a park within
the Willow Turn community lo-
cated on Larchmont Boulevard.
Cathy Hartman said that at dusk,
the area becomes a popular hang-
out for teens who are drinking,
smoking as well as vandalizing
playground equipment with graf-
fiti.
Bottles and garbage are being
left behind. There is broken
glass, Hartman said. It is be-
coming an eyesore, and it is af-
fecting the property value of the
homes in the area.
Township manager Maureen
Mitchell said she would speak
with both police chief Dennis
Cribben as well as the public
works department about what
can be done to make the area
safer. Ensuring the hours of the
park are displayed as well as po-
tentially adding a light was dis-
cussed by the council. Hartman
was adamant that the area needs
to be better lit as opposed to pa-
trolled more.
The police cannot be there all
hours of the night. The park
needs a light to deter kids from
being there, Hartman said.

My kids went to school here
so Ive been a part of the Mt. Lau-
rel schools for about 20 years. Ive
been volunteering with the
schools since then, Hochman
said.
In the 2012-2013 school year,
Hochman published his first chil-
dren's book, laZy, craZy & amaZ-
ing. He followed up with an illus-
trated version (laZy, craZy &
amaZing: The ZequIllustration)
featuring imaginative pictures
drawn by elementary school stu-
dents. Both a print and digital
publication, laZy, craZy & amaz-
ing is a story about the letter Z,
who is upset with his position in
the alphabet. The sarcastic letter
visits Dr. Alissa Letterberger for
advice while journeying toward
self-discovery.
Originally, Hochman was going
to hire a professional illustrator
but instead reached out to schools
about having students complete
the illustrations. The response
was overwhelming.
It was great to see what the
kids came up with and how excit-
ed they were to see their work in a
book, Hochman said. The kids
get really excited, the teachers
are excited, even the parents as
well. Its been a great experience
for everyone whos been in-
volved.
Next came Mr. Hocklenutty's
Magic Glasses, dreamed up with
first graders then illustrated and
narrated with a talented group of
fourth graders.
When the Southern New Jer-
sey director of BookMates, a pro-
gram that encourages adults to
read to children, challenged him
to tackle the subject of bullying,
Hochman wrote WATER
Comes. The story features an in-

advertently heroic skunk that
evolves from being bullied to be-
coming an overbearing bully him-
self.
Hochman "field tested" it at
several schools and for different
age groups. A standing ovation
from a "highly evolved" fifth
grade class in Moorestown pro-
vided the impetus to finalize it
and publish.
At the end of the 2012-2013
school year, Hochman completed
Mister Fancy Dancer with a
unique assembly of students and
educators at Whittier Family
School in Camden.
The story dreamed up with
fifth graders follows Caezaah
Wiggington as he overcomes his
inability to communicate orally
by speaking from his heart
through his feet. When his day
comes, Caezaah knows it and
seizes it.
Conducting the readings at the
schools in the district has always
been the most rewarding as well
as the most fun part of the
process for Hochman.
Its incredibly fun to see their
responses to the books and to see
the enjoyment on their faces,
Hochman said.
My hope is for more of both
going forward.
