Presidents Report
The gnomes are selling very well - please remember that if you added yourself to any of our rosters that you must let me, Kristin, know if you need to change or you cant come. I will send out revised rosters for the rest of Floriade as they become available there are gaps still so if you are able to do more please let me know. Last week our guest speaker was Janet Werner from the National Stroke Foundation we all appreciated her clear message and would advise others to invite the Foundation to their meetings. Loved her flip chart too. On Thursday night Laura Sparkes (QHS SRC Interact Club) who won the 4 Way Speaking Competition at QHS competed against other Canberra speakers at the Rotary Club of North Canberras meeting at the Yowani Country Club. I had excellent reports of Lauras speech but unfortunately on the night she did not win. We appreciate the effort that Laura has put into this and hope that she gained from it. Thanks to Bly, and Tims previous efforts at QHS, and the support team for Laura. On Thursday night I represented our Club at the Queanbeyan: city of champions event the book is a fantastic addition to our local heritage. On Saturday Doug sold tickets outside the Rotary Shop then went to the BBQ! On Saturday the Relay for Life was launched in Riverside with Bly and Joan attending/launching. On Saturday the QHS SRC Interact Club held a BBQ as part of the 175th Birthday Celebrations what a hectic and windy day the sausages were very popular - sold out twice and the wind tried and eventually won taking our cover and the BBQ with it nearly at the finish of the day thank goodness. Doug, Roni, Bill and I were there from our Club, 6-8 Interactors at any time and Michael and Gaye all contributed the workforce for the day. Michael will be able report on the success of the day at our meeting. This weeks meeting is one of our official meetings with Lynne Duckham, Assistant Governor. Our speaker is Craig Alford, Ride to the Other Side, who is here this week on his ride and we have the important function of welcoming Michael Guilfoyle as our newest Rotarian. Please be there. The QHS SRC Interact Club has a BBQ at Masters Hardware (Airport) on Monday 7 October. If any of our Rotarians can assist please let me or Michael Guilfoyle know. Kristin

Dear all What an exciting day we had at the Queanbeyan 175th Birthday celebrations. With setup from 8.30 am, through to the destruction of a marquee we were sitting under, by high winds, at 3.00 pm and then through to pack up and departure by 4.00 pm. We had a big BBQ team of: Students: Norman L, Josh G, Laura S, Rochelle S, Ty P, Raj S, Grayce C, and Veronica C; Queanbeyan Rotarians: Kristen B, Bill H, Doug M and Ronie C; and Teachers: Gaye F and myself. We started with 240 sausages (10 packs of 24) to cook. After selling the first 200 we sent out for another 240, by the time those sausages had arrived we were totally sold out and had a queue of over twenty deep! Those sausages also quickly sold. It had been windy all day, but at about the same time as we started cooking our third lot of sausages, the wind really picked up. Despite being tried onto our trailer, the Council owned marquee, we were sitting under, was picked up by the wind and dropped onto our BBQ - destroying the marquee and breaking one of the 'gas jets' on our BBQ. The only notified injuries were to two Rotarians. One of whom sliced a finger on the onion slicer and the other whom tried to hold down the flying marquee and had her hand caught between two closing roof struts. Thankfully both seemed OK by departure time. [Special thanks go to the first aid officer from the Queanbeyan RFS]. After expenses we expect to raise over $1000 for the day WOW :) (Note we still need to make repairs to the BBQ gas jet). An exciting but fun day. Regards Mr G

The Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra will be hosting an information night presented by Felix Mollel & Kim Saville from the School of St Jude in Arusha, Tanzania. Felix will be speaking about the School of St Jude and how he came to work there. He will talk about his family life, his Maasai tribe and growing up in Tanzania. He will explain how St Judes has empowered him, along with 400 other Tanzanian colleagues, to develop skills, learn English and as part of a community, fight poverty through education. Guests will be captivated by Felix's story. It is also the story of how an Australian woman made a huge difference in an African country with the support of many Rotary clubs in Australia and is continuing to do so. It really is a celebration of success and triumph of the human spirit. This is the first time that Felix has travelled outside Africa so it will be a very special time for him. There will be time for questions and answers. All district Rotary club representatives, family and friends are invited to attend this evening on: Thursday, 31st October at Jerrabomberra Public School Hall at 7.30 pm. Tea and coffee will be provided. Please notify numbers attending for catering and seating purposes to: chris.hunter@det.nsw.edu.au by 25th October, please. We thank you in anticipation of making the effort to support Felix and the School of St Jude. Yours in Rotary Chris Hunter Immediate Past President, For Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra Ph. 62998860 (w)

Invitation to Menslink Midweeker

Wed 16th October with Canberra FM's Eoghan O'Byrne
Our next round of Menslink Midweekers continue where we get high profile men to talk openly about their lifes journey. In particular how they overcame challenges and tough times that affect us all to achieve the success that they have had in life. Midweekers are open to women and men of all ages who want to come and listen to inspiring stories from our local men, as well as to understand some of the key issues facing young guys in our region. Did you know for example, that young men drop out of school and university at double the rate of young women, are twenty times more likely to be incarcerated and are three to four times more likely to kill themselves than young women? October's Midweeker features the general manager of Canberra FM Radio Eoghan OBryne who talks about his inspiring journey from growing up in Ireland to running two of the most successful radio stations in Canberra, Mix 106.3 and 104.7 The next Midweeker is on Wednesday 16th October at Gryphons Caffe and Bar in Griffith Shops. They start around five o'clock with speeches commencing at 5:45pm. Entry is free and open to all. Stick around to have a chat, a coffee or a drink or even a meal from their tasty bistro. You don't need to RSVP - just come along Brumbies Rugby, as a key sponsor of Menslink and this event in particular, will again have a Brumbies' lucky door prize. We're also grateful to acknowledge the support of the ACT Veterans Rugby Club. Hopefully we can see you there... SAVE THE DATES: The next two Midweekers feature comedian Jay Sullivan (Nov 13th) and former Brumby and Wallaby great Joe Roff (Dec 11th).
