“Hatpin” – Musical Theatre
Performed by UB’s Graduating Third Year Music Theatre students,
and a 10 piece orchestra

The Hatpin, a musical written by James Millar and Peter Rutherford,
was inspired by the true story of a single mother who advertised her
baby in a newspaper trading column in the hope of saving his
life…and ended up embroiled in one of the most captivating, moving
and exciting criminal cases in Australian history. This powerful
Australian musical had its premiere in Sydney and New York last
year, and The Arts Academy is proud to present the Victorian
premiere of this exciting new work with the composer Peter
Rutherford as our guest Musical Director. Don’t miss it!

Masako’s column on enjoying Ballarat
How to Protect Yourself? (1) Street Smart.
Your life in Australia will be successful if you pay attention to your own
security. Australia is not your country, Ballarat is not your hometown, so
remember that something which may be OK in your home country, may not be
acceptable behaviour here.
Trusting is always challenging and tricky in a
foreign country. Unfortunately, the City of
Ballarat and Melbourne may not be
completely safe for you. An International
student who was a friend of mine experienced
this in Melbourne. She was attacked, abused
and had her valuables stolen. Following this
incident she no longer coped with her studies
levels. Sadly, she decided to return to her
own country, saying that she would never
come back to Australia. This is a negative
case and chances are that it won’t happen to
you, however you never know. Here are some
tips on how to minimize any risk when you are
down the street. For example, I recently
bought a security whistle, an investment of a
few dollars, which I feel is worthwhile and
gives me greater peace of mind.
Before you go out and walk down the
street, be prepared…
√ Check list
Tell someone (your friends, house
mates, host family) where you are
going
Know safe places you can go if you
feel threatened, such as a Police or
Fire station, the Library, a 24 hour
store or a friend’s house
Carry a torch at night and ride with
a bike light
Keep money in your pocket and not
in your handbag
Avoid carrying large amounts of
money
⇐ Be aware that people with bad intentions
do not always look mean or scary
⇐ Do not get close to people you don’t know
well. Make sure you have room to run
⇐ If anyone bothers you, scream, run away
and ask someone for help
⇐ Avoid walking or riding alone
⇐ Walk in well lit and busy areas. Avoid dark
parks, vacant land and alleys
⇐ When using an ATM (Automatic Teller
machines) ensure you are not being
watched
⇐ Stay alert. Be aware of your surroundings
⇐ Keep your purse or handbag under your
arm and in front of your body so it cannot
be easily snatched.
According to police officers, it is a good
idea to ignore a stranger who yells out to
you. They seek your attention, as a result
they win when you react. Stay calm and
keep your distance.
