consecutive season, RHP Hisashi Iwakuma was the MVP pitcher and OF/DH Raul Ibaez was
the Unsung Hero in awards presented by the Seattle chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of
Americaadditionally, Ibaez was the Mariners nominee for the MLBPAA Heart and Hustle Award,
the Roberto Clemente Award and one of 6 finalists for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award.
YOUTH MOVEMENTSeattle used 47 players during the season, 22 pitchers and 25 position
players15 rookies saw action and 11 players made their MLB debut (6 position players, 5 pitchers)
of the 11 MLB debuts, 9 were homegrown players11 debuts were tied for 4th-most in club history,
and 2nd-most by an AL club in 13 (HOU - 15)the Opening Day roster featured only 2 rookies
(Capps, Maurer), while the final active roster featured 13 rookiesat the end of the season the
Mariners roster was the 4th-youngest in baseball, even with a pair of 40-year-olds (Ibaez & Blanco).
