Indigestive malnutrition

This is a condition of chronic malnutrition in children under three years of age caused
by the disturbance of digestion and absorption of food over a long period of time or
by an insufficient intake of protein and calories.

Treatment:

Foot massage: The massage is applied to stomach (15), duodenum (16), liver (18),
gallbladder (19), small intestine (25), spleen (34) and coeliac plexus (20) reflecting
areas. The foot is held in one hand by the physician and the knuckle of the first
interphalangeal joint of the other index finger is used to apply massage on the
projecting areas 3-4 times (Fig. 91).

Foot acupuncture:

(1) Meridianal acupoints: At Neiting (ST 44), Gongsun (SP 4) and Shangqiu (SP 5)
acupoints, a reinforcing acupuncture technique is applied and the needles are retained
for 15 to 20 minutes; or moxibustion is applied for 15 minutes.
(2) Extra acupoint: A reinforcing acupuncture technique is applied at Ranhou (EX-F
12) acupoint and the needle is retained for 15 to 20 minutes; or moxibustion is applied
for 15 minutes.
(3) Foot acupoints: A reinforcing technique is applied at Stomach (FA-P 8) and Spleen
(FA-P 10) acupoints and the needles are retained for 20 minutes; or moxibustion is
applied for 15 minutes.

External application of drugs:

(1) The powder of Zhiren (cape-jasmine fruit) 30 grains, Taoren (peach kernel) 7
grains, Pixiao (sodium sulfate) 7 gm, green onion 7 pieces and 1 spoonful of fine
wheat flour is mixed with the white of one egg and an adequate amount of bee honey
to prepare a paste for application to spleen (34) and stomach (15) reflecting areas and
covered with a piece of gauze to clear heat, promote blood circulation and resolve
food stagnation. Uncooked, cold and fishy food, and desserts are prohibited for
children with this disease.
(2) The powder of Zhiren (cape-jasmine fruit) 30 grains, Xingren (apricot kernel) 7
gin, Hujiao (white pepper) 6 gm, green onion 7 pieces, 1 spoonful of wheat flour, and
Dingxiang (cloves) 30 grains is mixed with the white of 1 egg and liquor to prepare a
paste for application to the central area of both soles and covered with a piece of
gauze.
(3) The powder (15-20 gm) of Taoren (peach kernel), Xingren (apricot kernel) and
Zhiren (cape-jasmine fruit) in same amount, and a small amount of Bingpian (borneol)

and Zhangnao (camphor) is mixed with 1 egg white to prepare a paste of proper
thickness for application to both Yongquan (KI 1) acupoints and wrapped with a
bandage for 24 hours.
(4) The powder of Xuanmingfen (exsiccated sodium sulfate) 3 gm and Hujiao (black
pepper) 0.5 gm is directly applied to spleen (34) and stomach (15) reflecting areas on
foot and wrapped with gauze and adhesive plaster. The powder is changed once a day.
