Seniors Halloween Party is Oct. 22


The annual Halloween Party Luncheon is set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, at the Romulus Senior Center. There will be three costume contest winners: favorite, most colorful and funniest. The Dubisky and Ryzner Band will perform. There will be food, dancing, gifts and raffles. Everyone is invited for a fun day. The fee is $3. Please sign up if you are interested. Call (734) 955-4120.

Trip to Turkeyville is Oct. 24


Seniors are invited to a special trip to Cornwells Turkeyville on October 24. A bus will leave the Senior Center at 9:30 a.m. for Marshall, Michigan. The day will include a dinner theater and shopping. Turkeyville is called Michigans most unique motorcoach attraction. The complex includes a 250seat restaurant serving home-cooked food, a 175seat theater featuring professional entertainment and a shopping adventure at the Country Junction Gift Shoppe, Bakery, Deli, Fudge Shop. The cost of the trip is $46. Sign up in advance by calling (734) 955-4120 or visit the Senior Center.

Three free new classes: Crochet, Ceramics and Candy Making


Three new free classes will be offered to seniors during October: A Ceramics Class is scheduled for 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, October 14. A Candy-Making Class is scheduled for 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, October 21. A Crochet Class is scheduled for 1 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 29. Senior Center Director Rose Swidan said the classes have been scheduled due to requests by seniors. She said each class will be held one day a month, depending on popularity. Motor City Casino Trip


Romulus seniors will travel to the Motor City Casino on Tuesday, October 15. Buses leave the Romulus Senior Center at 9 a.m. The cost is $10 per person. The casino provides $20 in credit upon arrival. To sign up, call (734) 955-4120 or stop by the Senior Center during normal hours.

Remembering Mildred

Medicare open enrollment


Senior Alliance counselors will answer Medicare questions from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 12, at the Romulus Senior Center. MMAP counselors will be available to enroll you in Part D or the Medicare Advantage Plan or apply for Medicare Savings and the Extra Help Program. Seniors must bring their Medicare card and a list of prescriptions. The MMAP helpline is (800) 803-7174.

Romulus seniors, church members, friends and city officials gathered at the Romulus Senior Center on Sept. 12 to honor the late Mildred Campbell in a memorial service and enjoy a meal in her honor. Senior Center Director Rose Swidan said the service fulfilled a promise to Millie.

Bingo is played at Noon Mondays and Wednesdays at the Senior Center. The fee is two bingo cards for 25 cents. Thanks to our sponsors. Tender Care will provide pizza and pop on October 9. Mission Home Health will provide pizza and pop on October 16. City Treasurer Stacy Paige will provide pizza and pop on October 23. Mayor Pro-Tem LeRoy Burcroff will provide pizza and pop on October 30.

Game Days & Exercise


Members of the Romulus Senior Center can play games and exercise throughout the week: Bingo is played at noon Mondays and Wednesdays. Bunco is played at noon Tuesdays. Pinochle and other games are played during Wednesday Fun Days. Game Day is scheduled for noon Thursdays. Pokeno is played at noon Fridays. A stress-free chair exercise class begins at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays. To register, call the Senior Center at (734) 9554120. Seniors who enjoy quilting and each others company gather at 6 p.m. Thursdays.

Romulus Farmers Market


The Romulus Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through October at the Historical Park Pavilion at 11147 Hunt Street near Goddard Road in Downtown Romulus. Vendors sell such items as fresh eggs and produce, homemade baked goods and handmade crafts. There will be childrens activities, too. Bridge Cards, WIC Project Fresh and Senior Project Fresh are accepted. The market accepts vendor applications. Applications are available on Market Days or at Romulus City Hall, 11111 Wayne Road. Volunteers Needed
The Romulus Senior Center has openings for two volunteer positions: A volunteer is needed to check blood pressure once a month. A volunteer is needed to teach a dance class. To apply or receive more information, call Rose Swidan at the Senior Center, (734) 955-4120.

Caregiver Support
A representative from The Information Center will provide a caregiver support class at 10 a.m. the fourth Wednesday of the month, starting October 23. Anyone interested may attend the sessions. There is no fee.

Sock It to Us in October
The Romulus Senior Center will collect NEW socks during the month of October. Seniors can donate socks of any size, color and style to the effort, known as the 22nd annual Sock It to Us. All socks collected will be distributed by human service agencies and shelters throughout Wayne County.

Bingo raises funds for Animal Shelter


Councilman William Wadsworth reported that a combination of proceeds from bingo played at the Romulus Senior Center during the three-day Romulus DDA Pumpkin Festival, food sales, raffle tickets sold and cash donations raised about $2,500 to support the Romulus Animal Shelter. It might have been the biggest one we ever had, he said. Councilman Wadsworth sent his thanks to all players, volunteers and people and businesses that donated to this great cause.
A Medicare and Social Security Senior Town Hall drew a nice crowd of Western Wayne County seniors to the Romulus Senior Center on September 23. Hosted by State Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood, the forum also provided information from The Senior Alliance, AARP and Guardian Medical Monitoring, plus a lunch for attendees.

Party Rooms for Rent


The Romulus Senior Center is a great place to celebrate birthdays, baby showers, family reunions and wedding receptions. The beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the Senior Center are available for rent at very affordable rates. There are rooms that can hold up to 120 people and they are available any day of the week. Bring your own caterer or make arrangements to use the Senior Center kitchen. Romulus Health Fair is Nov. 14


Mark your calendar for 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. November 14, the date of the annual Romulus Health and Wellness Fair at the Romulus Senior Center. Health professionals and related vendors are invited to participate. Last years fair drew hundreds of area residents and dozens of vendors. The event targets senior citizens, but is open to people of all ages from Romulus and other communities. The day will feature flu shots, blood pressure checks, blood sugar screens and so much more. Vendors interested in participating can contact Senior Center Director Rose Swidan at (734) 955-4120 or rswidan@ci.romulus.mi.us. Table space for the event is $100, plus a donation for the raffle for seniors.

Need Food?
Low-income residents are eligible for free commodities each month at the Senior Center. A variety of food is provided by The Emergency Food Assistance Program of Wayne County Senior Services. This months food distribution begins at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17. Romulus Senior Director Rose Swidan encourages anyone in need of food any time to contact the center at (734) 955-4120.

Whispering Willow rummage sale


A fall rummage sale is planned for October 17-19 at Whispering Willows Co-op, 11100 Wayne Road. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 17-18 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 19. The sale will feature home goods, new and used jewelry, Christmas decorations, clothing and more more. Lunch will be served for $3.50 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a bake sale all three days. Please park in the south lot on Wayne Road or on Gabriel Street.
