Principals Column
Last week interims were posted on our Parent Portal for grades 3, 4 and 5. We did not send home a hard copy. Some of you have contacted the office indicating that you have lost your Parent Portal log-in or are having problems accessing it. We have been informed by the District Office that we can not email your password for Parent Portal. If you are having problems with Parent Portal, you will need to come into the office with your ID and we will assist you. If you do not have access to a computer, please let your childs teacher know. In addition, for students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades, Parent Portal will not show any grades/progress at the interim. Students in these grades do not receive grades, rather their progress on curriculum standards will be entered into Parent Portal when report cards are given at the end of the nine weeks. Congratulations to our newly installed student council members. I know that they will do a wonderful job of leading our school. Tomorrow is our Fabulous First Friday Spirit Day. Show your school spirit by wearing your favorite team colors. (Or your LMES colors!) We look forward to having our students grandparents visit on Monday, October 7th. See page 2 for the visitation schedule. Enjoy your weekend.

GRANDPARENTS DAYOctober 7th

Monday, October 7, will be our annual Grandparents' Visitation Day. We welcome our grandparents as they visit and see the many wonderful things their grandchildren are doing in school. In past years we have been blessed to have a large number of grandparents from near and far to visit with us. To be able to meet the needs of our grandparents and to accommodate the large numbers, we ask that you help to make the day flow better by asking the grandparents to do the following. Enter the door next to the cafeteria. Sign in and get name tags at the table inside the door. At or before the ending time for their visit, please have grandparents exit the building in order to provide parking for the next group of visitors. (Parents may bring grandparents, drop them off in the front, and then return for them at the designated time, if needed.) Maps, schedules, guides, and PTO volunteers will be available to help them find the locations of the classrooms. PTO School Spirit merchandise will be available at a table close to the sign-in if they would like to purchase or order items for grandchildren. Light snacks will be available in the classrooms provided by our PTO room parents. Times for Grandparent Visits by Grade Levels: Kindergarten - 9- 9:45 First Grade 10 - 10:45 Second Grade - 8 - 8:45 (IN Dockside Theatre) Third Grade - 8 - 8:45 Fourth Grade - 10 - 10:45 Fifth Grade 9 - 9:45

We need your help.

Each day we receive dozens of notes concerning changes in transportation, absence excuses, early dismissals, etc. Teachers send the notes to our instructional assistants who log the information for the office staff. All transportation changes that are called in throughout the day are then logged by the office staff. We need your help to be sure that these notes are received and logged correctly. 1. Please dont send your changes in transportation on sticky notes. These attach to other notes and can be overlooked or lost.

Other helpful information for grandparents:

2. Make sure your notes are on a large enough piece of paper that we can stamp them with the date received and bus approval. 3. Include your childs first and last name and the teachers name. Your childs teacher will know who the note is for by the first name only, but the office staff may not. It is very important that we know how each student is to be dismissed in the afternoon. 4. If you are sending dismissal changes on your childs communication log to the teacher, please remember to send a separate note to be logged and returned to the classroom at the end of the day. If a teacher has a substitute the information may not be received. 5. We appreciate your efforts to notify the school of transportation changes in advance. However, sending the notes on the day of the change is preferred. 6. Notes are delivered to the classroom each afternoon at 1:45 pm. Please call in all changes in transportation no later than 1:30 pm. Thank you for your help!

Nursing Subs Needed:

If you are a RN or LPN and are interested in being a substitute nurse in the district, please fill out the on-line application and call Cindy Richards, District Five Nursing Coordinator at 476-8258 for further information.

INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAYWednesday, October 9, 2013 Archery Reminder 4th and 5th Grade ONLY
Students in grades 4 and 5 have started their Archery Unit. The unit will focus on core strength, upper body strength and aiming. Due to the nature of the activity here are some important reminders. 1. Athletic shoes must be worn to PE class. 2. Long hair must be pulled back in a pony tail. 3. No dangling jewelry. 4. Archery is a silent sport. 5. Best behavior only. 6. Follow all rules 100% of the time. Students that have the highest archery score average from PE will be invited to join the archery team. The team is made up of 20 boys and girls from both 4th and 5th grades.

WHAT IS SISU?
The PE department is celebrating Sisu in our classes. Sisu is a Finnish word. Sisu is the highest honor you can receive in Finland. There is no single word equivalent in the English language. Sisu is a person who never gives up, always tries, cares for others, is honest when no one is looking, goes out of their way for the better good of others, a planner, leader, demonstrates sportsmanship, the person you would like to be like, someone you can count on, helpful and more. Those are the character traits we are highlighting in the gym. This award does not go to the fastest or strongest person but to the person who demonstrates the qualities of Sisu during PE. They are honored by writing their name on the wall of Sisu in the gym and wearing the Sisu- Viking helmet down the halls back to class. The other students in the school congratulate them for being a leader in their class as they walk by.
