Top 10% have big ambitions

Anna Benker Anna Benker grew up in Big Lake and has enjoyed playing tennis and being part of the National Honor Society. She plans to attend Hamline University but is undecided on a major. Annas favorite school memory is doing Zumba at Mrs. Crockers house. Her favorite class was environmental science with Mr. Theile. She says she will miss having a normal routine every day and will miss all the people she has made friends with in Big Lake. Work hard in high school because it pays off, Anna says. Bailey Bischoff Bailey Bischoff has attended Big Lake for her entire school career. She is a member of the swim team, the jazz band and the National Honor Society. She also had a part in the one-act play. Bailey plans to study political science at Principia College. Eventually she hopes to earn a masters degree and live on the west coast. Her fondest memories of school involve joking around in band class with Hilary Fiskum and Andy Wallen. She also enjoyed introduction to English Literature with Mrs. Curto. Bischoffs advice for underclassmen is to always dream and shoot higher than you know you can. Dont bother about being better than anyone else. Just try to be better than yourself, she said.

Christine Aubol Christine Aubol is a musician who has lived in Big Lake all her life. She played volleyball and was part of the skiing and snow-boarding club. She participated in band, jazz band, choir, one-act-play, show choir and wind ensemble and participated in Poetry Out Loud. Christine plans to attend North Dakota State University in Fargo and major in nursing. Her favorite class is band with Mr. Fillafer and , her favorite memory was shaving the coachs head in ninth grade ,volleyball after he lost a bet with the team. Music has always been a big part of my life, she said. I am definitely going to miss my friends, not just ones from here, from other places too. I am excited to meet new people next year though. Ten years from now Aubol hopes to be married and working fulltime as an RN. She would also like to travel to Italy. Her advise to younger students is to listen to their parents. They have been living this life way longer than you and they know what is best for you even if it might not seem like it at the time, she said.

Tyler Anthoney Tyler Anthoney is also a long-time Big Lake student who is a member of the National Honor Society and Friends of Rachel. He enjoys playing Varsity golf and his fondest school memory is golf season with Mr. Theile. Tylers favorite class is chemistry with Ms. Bowen. He says he will miss his golf team mates the most when he attends the University of Minnesota Duluth where he intends to study pre-med and healthcare administration. Ten years from now he hopes to be working in the medical field. Keep up on your grades because it will pay off in the long run, is Anthoneys advice.

Jennifer Edwards Staff Writer The top 10 percent of students graduating from high school this year have some lofty ambitions. It is also clear they place a high value on family and friendships, and all they have learned from growing up here in Big Lake. Almost all of them have lived in Big Lake their whole lives. They all intend to go on to college and most of them see themselves as being successful and with a family of their own 10 years from now. Their favorite classes reflect their intelligence. Lots of them said their favorite class was chemistry with Ms. Kim Bowen. They are also the musicians, the singers, the athletes and the leaders of their class in many different ways.

Michael Blume Michael Blume has attended Big Lake schools since eighth grade. He likes football, wrestling and participating in track and field. He is a member of the band and the National Honor Society. Michael intends to study actuarial science at the University of St. Thomas and play football for them. Beating Rocori in football for homecoming his senior year is one of his favorite memories. Team sports with Mr. Miller is his favorite class. I will miss the sports and my friends, said Michael, who hopes to have a family of his own 10 years from now. Stay on top of things and be responsible but have fun too, Blume says. You are only in high school once. Enjoy it. Miranda Bridgeman Miranda has attended Big Lake schools since kindergarten. She has played softball and basketball and been on the track team for three years. She is a member of Friends of Rachel and the National Honor Society. Miranda intends to go to the University of Minnesota Morris to study biochemistry and hopes to graduate from medical school and live in California. Continued On Page 12

Nicholas Schleif Nicholas has attended Big Lake School all his life, participating in knowledge bowl, math league and the National Honor Society. He hopes to attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities to study electrical engineering. Schleifs favorite memories of high school were made in his science elabs and A.P. History. His favorite class is chemistry and college chemistry. r Ms. Bowen is one of the most fantastic teachers at Big Lake High School, Schleif said.

Ill miss seeing everyone I grew up with every day and chilling in the halls with Kelsi Kleven and Lindsay Olson, she said. Her advice to younger students is to remember they will never be in high school again. Do what you can to make it the most memorable four years of your life, she said.

It was one of the best shows of my life, she said. I will miss the choir at Big Lake. I had a great time singing with all the ladies in treble choir and I will miss them a lot. My favorite teacher is Mrs. Sass, says Betsy who hopes to teach English herself some day after attending a Catholic College. She is unfailingly kind and incredibly generous. She cares about her students. Betsy advises other students not to take themselves too seriously. You will make mistakes and you may feel like the sky is falling, she said. When that happens, just push through and remember this is just high school and the best is yet to come.

Nicholas says he will miss the friends he has made through his years of schooling in Big Lake. Its not always about what you do or where you are but who you share it with, he said. I will never forget the friendships and bonds I have made at Big Lake High School. Nicholas encourages other students to develop their intellectual curiosity. Do activities outside the classroom that show your dedication and will to succeed, he says. And never stop questioning and asking why. John Quincy Adams once said, Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.

Staying strong through a senior year surprise

had, we didnt want to believe it could ever be cancer, remembers Teigen. Just as these close friends have always done things together, Czech and Teigen started a journey supporting Goracke. These two have been here for me the most, said Goracke. After a difficult month, Goracke had surgery Jan. 21, 2013. The surgery was supposed to take out half of the lump, but ended up removing the entire thyroid and 20 lymph nodes, 16 of which proved cancerous. The surgery did not completely solve the problem, however. I start radiation June 24. Thats when I start it all. Theyll take further steps from there with what they find out, said Goracke. Thyroid cancer is one of the most treatable cancers, but its still cancer, said Goracke. Its kind of scary. I always ask myself, because I had cancer young, if Ill get a different type of cancer when Im older. Getting Through Tough Times Ive always been told God wont give you a battle you cant fight, said Goracke about

Aleah Stenberg Contributing Writer The last bell rings. The last final is turned in. Caps, gowns and tassels. Pomp and Circumstance plays. One final summer. As August draws near, many of these seniors will be headed off to college. Big life changes and choices are in store. Like her fellow graduating seniors, Breann Goracke is excited. Im ready to be done and start a new chapter in life, she says. But for Bre, as her friends call her, this last summer before college will be more complicated than her classmates. At the end of June she will begin radiation treatments for thyroid cancer discovered during Christmas break. Diagnosis During the fall semester, close friends Cayla Czech and Michaela Teigen talked with Goracke about the lump that she found on her throat. Gorackes allergist suggested she get the bump looked at. When the biopsy came back, the report was cancer. When we talked about that bump you

staying strong throughout this cancer. Goracke has stayed strong by focusing on school, sports and friends. The surgery set her behind two weeks in school and she missed those weeks in basketball, her favorite sport. Goracke also participated in track this spring, specializing in the high jump and triple jump events. There are days where I dont feel good at all, but theres nothing you can do, said Goracke. She just takes it one day at a time. Her spirits are upbeat. She does have a great support group, said Patricia Morningstar, academic guidance counselor for juniors and seniors at Big Lake High School. The uncertainty of it all is hard. Our main concern for students who go through things like this is their mental health and physical wellbeing. Itd be hard for anybody to deal with this, let alone a 17 or 18-year-old, said Morningstar. While classmates have wished her well and the school honored her with the title of Sno-Daze Queen this winter, Goracke is most thankful for her close friends and family.

When I woke up in the hospital, I had my mom, dad, sister, boyfriend and best friends there. Just having them there meant a lot to me. Im just blessed to have the people I have in my life, remembers Goracke. Future Plans As Goracke and her best friends Czech, heads to Ridgewater College in Willmar, Teigen, off to St. Cloud State University, look back over the last four years theyve spent in high school together, they leave a message for next years seniors and underclassmen: Dont give up. Just keep trying. Enjoy it. The end of the year comes faster than you think. In the fall, Goracke plans to attend St. Cloud Technical College, and then hopes to transfer to North Dakota State University for her sophomore year. Ive always wanted to be a cop since I was little, reminisced Goracke. Now maybe Ill be a lawyer or do something in criminal justice. Goracke will be pursuing a degree in the law field.
