PASADENA COVENANT CHURCH

October 2013

Lake & Santa Barbara

Pasadena Covenant Church was founded in 1922 by 7 married couples and 12 single women as a haven for those who toiled.** We on the Peace and Justice team believe one reason we continue to be planted on the corner of Lake and Santa Barbara is to be good news to our neighborhood. By intentionally seeking to get to know our neighbors connected with Madison Elementary School, we have encountered Mirsa, Jan and moms (Esmeralda, Marianna and Blanca) at the Madison Family Center, Principal Carmen Serrano, the teachers and students at the school. Through Wayne and Susan Aoki, we have celebrated birthdays with families at Door of Hope. Through Jenny and Rex Lee of Northwest Neighbors, we have met some of the teenagers in our neighborhood. We also seek, in different ways, to share with our neighbors connected with Madison Elementary School: with gifts of food, collected Sunday mornings and delivered to the Madison Family Center by the Bascoms; with our time, helping teachers in the classrooms and providing food for bi-weekly teacher meetings; and with our means, by donating and equipping 15 computers to the Madison Family Center, where Mirsa will soon start computer classes for parents. Through these opportunities, we feel that God is laying the foundation for us to intentionally seek to see this neighborhood through the eyes and hearts of our neighbors, so that we can begin to share in each others lives (the joys, hopes and struggles), while leaning on God together. It is God who will do this, but we can prepare ourselves. This Advent, Mindie Moore will be leading a book study of Making Room, Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition, by Christine Pohl (and no, it isnt too early to start preparing to prepare). We hope this time will begin to equip and teach us, as a church, what it looks like to welcome our neighbors into our lives. In the meantime, please notice the opportunities on the Churchs website (under Ministries: Local Outreach) or in the newsletter to dip a toe in the water: helping with the Club 21 Walk-a-thon, supporting the Northwest Neighbors Pop-Up Caf, talking with Dorothy Patzia about ways to help at Madison, or visiting the CAN-DO Kids Club, the after school tutoring program here at the church. Please help us discover more fully the ways God has planted us in this place to seek Him and share Him. 2013-2014 Bad Weather Shelter (BWS) Ministry begins November 29th

When the Bad Weather Shelter is weather-activated, Pasadena Covenants gym transforms from a basketball court to a shelter for those who need a safe place to stay at night (weather-activated means night time temperatures drop to 40 degrees or colder, or there is a 40% change of rain). We need the help of many to care for those who come and stay the night in our gym building. The BWS season begins November 29, 2013 and ends March 15, 2014. Pasadena Covenant helps man the BWS Wednesday evenings (a total of 15 Wednesdays for the 2013-14 season). We need a group for each for the 15 Wednesday nights that Pasadena Covenant is responsible to cover. A group of 12 to 15 people will work from 6:15 to 8:30 9:00 p.m. (come earlier if you are cooking in the kitchen). The group will plan and provide a meal, side, drinks, and dessert, help set up the gym and wash the dishes after the meal (handouts will include suggestions for meals and instructions and information explaining what is included in manning the BWS). To sign up to help, or for more information, someone from the Peace and Justice committee will be in the Courtyard/gym at hospitality time beginning October 6th. Or, call Wayne Walker (626) 396-1750 or e-mail at waynefredwalker@gmail.com (on the subject line put: BWS).

Cross-Cultural Communication Specialists Update

Paul and Gretchen DeNeui live in Chicago where Gretchen works as the finance manager for Covenant World Mission and Paul is the Director of the Center for World Christian Studies and is Professor of Missiology and Intercultural Studies at North Park Theological Seminary. North Park Theological Seminary (NPTS) is the graduate theological school of the Evangelical Covenant Church and the Center for World Christian Studies (CWCS) connects NPTS with the world and the world with NPTS, equipping churches in mission in the process. Paul also spends 1/3 of his time as a resource person for the Evangelical Covenant's Department of World Mission (Covenant World Mission). All of the training for Covenant missionaries and travel outside of the US falls into this category with some overlap in his travel courses from the seminary. This past school year, Paul has ministered in all three capacities in a variety of different ways. To list a few, Paul: 1) traveled to Thailand with seminary students for their bi-lingual learning experience, 2) helped developed a missiology course with Dr. Daniel Hodge for North Park University summer term entitled The Global Impact of Western Youth Culture, 3) taught an online course and also, using a new format, was able to teach a course to both online and classroom students together, 4) spoke at a retreat in Doula, Cameroon on the three models of mission found in the book of Ruth, 5) traveled to Thailand to help prepare for the 2015 SEANET conference, 6) taught a class in Japan on mission history, 7) participated in training of 9 project and short-term missionaries at the annual Missionary Equipping and Training Event sponsored by Covenant World Mission, 8) with student help, he edited a book published by William Carey Library entitled Developing Indigenous Leaders: Lessons in Mission from Buddhist Asia, 9) participated in numerous other events in various capacities. This coming academic year Paul is working on creating chat rooms for the Evangelical Covenant missionaries on a variety of applicable topic which can build as online resources for short term, project and long term missionaries as well as church mission leaders. He is also exploring possibilities, through the Center for World Christian Studies, for formal cooperation between the North Park Theological Seminary and other sister seminaries and leadership training programs, starting with those in Alaska and Burma. And finally, in conjunction with CWM and NPTS Field Education Department, he seeks to improve communication of global opportunities for faculty and students. Gretchen and Paul are grateful for the opportunity to serve in so many different ways. They are also very grateful to Pasadena Covenant for our prayer and financial support of their ministries (the 1/3 of Pauls time working for CWM is made possible by support raised through CWM). Please continue to left them up in prayer as they seek to serve in the US and abroad.
