a) Determine the reaction at support A and B as shown below. Now find the vertical component at support B as shown below. Take sum of moments about A is zero. MA = 0

By c P b cos 60 2 Pb sin 60 = 0 Here c and b is the distance between the supports, P is the load acting on it. Substitute 2.858 for c , 185 kN for P By 2.858 ( 185 kN ) ( 0.8875 ) ( 370 kN ) ( 1.5372 ) = 0 By = 732.9515 2.858 = 256.45 kN

Hence the vertical component at support B is 256.45 kN Now rewrite the vertical component of support B in terms of applied load as given below. By = 1.386 P Now find the vertical component of support A using the formula given below. Ay = P By Here P is the applied load, and By is the vertical component of support B. Substitute 185 for P and 256.46 for By Ay = 185 256.46 = 71.46 kN Hence the vertical component of support A is 71.46 kN Rewrite the vertical component of support A in terms of applied load as given below. Ay = 0.386 P Now find the horizontal component of support B as shown below. Take sum of moments about C is zero. MC = 0 By L cos 37.9 Bx L sin 37.9 = 0 Here By is the vertical component of support B, L is the length of the frame. Substitute 256.45 kN for By Bx = 256.45 kN sin 37.9 cos 37.9 = 329 kN

Hence the horizontal component at support B is 329 kN Now find the horizontal component of support A as shown below. Ax + 329 kN = 370 kN Ax = 41 kN Hence the horizontal component of support A is 41 kN

b) Determine the permissible load as show below. Now draw the free body diagram showing all the forces acting at joint A as shown below.

Now consider the joint A. The force equilibrium equation is FAC sin 60 = Ay Substitute the vertical component of support A as 0.386 P = Ay FAC = 0.386 P sin 60

Now write the stress formula for member AC as given below. F AC = AC A Here A is the area, FAC is the force acting along AC. Substitute the value of FAC is above stress equation as given below. 0.386 P AC = A sin 60 Substitute 3500 mm 2 for A and 150 N / mm 2 for AC 0.386 P 150 N / mm 2 = 3500 sin 60 0.386 P = 454663.33 P = 1177.8 kN Hence the maximum permissible load in member AC is 1177.8 kN

Now draw the free body diagram showing all the forces acting at joint A as shown below.

Now consider the joint B. The force equilibrium equation is FBC sin 38 = By Substitute the vertical component of support A as 1.386 P = By FBC = 0.386 P sin 38

Now write the stress formula for member BC as given below. F BC = BC A Here A is the area, FBC is the force acting along BC. Substitute the value of FBC is above stress equation as given below. 1.386 P BC = A sin 38 Substitute 3500 mm 2 for A and 150 N / mm 2 for BC 0.386 P 150 N / mm 2 = 3500 sin 38 1.386 P = 454663.33 P = 233.2 kN Hence the maximum permissible load in member BC is 233.2 kN

Now consider the member AB and find the force in member AB as shown below. FAB = By It is known that the vertical component of support B is By = 1.779 P kN Hence the force in member AB is FAB = 1.779 P kN Now write the stress formula for member AB as given below. F AB = AB A Here A is the area, FAB is the force acting along AB. Substitute the value of FAB is above stress equation as given below. 1.799 P AB = A Substitute 3500 mm 2 for A and 150 N / mm 2 for BC 1.799 P 150 N / mm 2 = 3500 P = 291.83 kN Hence the maximum permissible load in member AB is 291.83 kN Now compare the maximum permissible load in each member and select the maximum permissible load of member BC 233.2 kN
