Contributing to development
As well as defending the nation and protecting its security the Sultan’s Armed
Forces (SAF) play a direct part in the country’s ongoing development. They take
on projects such as road building and the provision of health and other essential
services in the remote desert regions and other inaccessible areas.
Following the devastation wreaked in certain areas of the country by cyclone
Gonu in 2007, the SAF and the Royal Guard of Oman (RGO) gained the respect
and unconditional admiration of Sultan Qaboos and Omani citizens with their
sterling work in helping rebuild roads, transporting relief supplies, rescuing
stranded citizens and repairing bridges and other installations.
The SAF also trains civilians in navigation, communications and
administration, runs training programmes for students, takes part in search
and rescue operations at sea and in cases of natural disasters and helps prevent
illegal immigration.
Retired SAF and RGO personnel frequently join the private sector,
contributing their skills and experience to the Sultanate’s ongoing development RAFO helicopter
