TRAINING FIELD SUPPORT TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

Squirter DTIs
the best way to bolt!
Applied Bolting Technology manufactures a full line of
ASTM F959 Direct Tension Indicators (DTIs) to be used
with A325 and A490 bolts as well as several large
diameter sizes for wind tower applications.
Since 1994, Applied Boltings DTIs have been installed
on tens of millions of bolts from Fort McMurray, Canada
to the southern tip of Argentina, from Australia to Dubai.
Our experienced professionals travel extensively to assist
field bolting crews, construction teams, and engineering
groups improve bolting efficiency while maintaining
structural integrity.
Bolting:
Structural bolting requires a pre-determined amount of
clamp load or tension within fasteners for each connection
to transfer loads as designed. Tension is the amount of
force between steel plies that keeps buildings sound and
industrial complexes running smooth. It is only achieved
by stretching bolts during installation.
Torque:
Often torque is incorrectly used as an indicator that
sufficient tension has been achieved. Since Torque is
the twisting force or effort it takes to spin a nut along the
threads of a bolt, it is adversely affected by friction. You
can use up plenty of torque while installing a bolt and never
tighten it properly. Factors common to jobsites; dirt, dust
heat, rust, rain, condensation, poor storage, damaged
threads, or poor lubrication, will consume available torque
and leave bolts loose, compromising the design.
DTIs:
As mechanical load cells, DTIs indicate tension using bump
compression generated directly during tightening. Since the
bumps must physically compress under actual clamp load,
Direct Tension Indicators are the only tensioning method
that bolts have achieved the required tension, as verified
with a feeler gage.
Squirter DTIs
As an improvement to a DTIs constructibility, Applied
Boltings Squirter DTIs indicate bump compression
visually, without a feeler gage. Feeler gages can still
be used but Squirters allow for simple visual inspec-
tion of 100% of bolts by installers and inspectors.
Squirter DTIs are the only installation method that
confirms good field bolting practice by detecting insuf-
ficiencies as they occur. Conscientious engineers and
construction groups
routinely demand Squirter DTIs to be used through-
out their projects to assure adequate clamp load has
been achieved within their designs.
Why use Squirter DTIs
We were very pleased with the way the
SQUIRTER DTIs performed on our project.
The contractor indicated that they made the
job go faster and I know that they made
inspection quicker and more accurate.

Let me tell you. Squirters are light years
ahead of any other tightening method.
Wed rather use a SQUIRTER DTIs than
any other method.

Workers can do their own quality control.
They know when they see the squirt that theyve
done it right. I heartily endorse SQUIRTER DTIs.
Id like to see them on every job.
