On behalf of all our friendly
citizens, let me extend a warm
Belizean welcome to our
guests from all over the globe.
We’re very proud of the many
unique experiences available
in our beautiful country, and
we are delighted to share these
experiences with you.
Geography
Belize is approximately 185 miles long and 75 miles wide, or about
247,019 discoveries that await you.
Climate
Offering a subtropical climate with brisk prevailing trade winds
from the Caribbean and an average temperature of 80˚F, Belize has
two seasons: the dry season from December to May, and the “green
or rainy season” from June to November. Any day of the year, you’ll
call it Paradise.
Time Zone
Belize is on GMT-6, or U.S. Central Standard Time. Daylight saving
time is not practiced.
Government
Independent from Britain since 1981, Belize (formerly British
Honduras) has a democratically elected parliamentary government
and is a member of the British Commonwealth.
Currency
The local currency is the Belize dollar. U.S. $1 is equivalent to BZ $2
and does not fluctuate. U.S. currency is readily accepted throughout
the country. ATMs are located countrywide in the main cities and
towns and most allow cash withdrawals via credit card.
Electrical System
The electrical system in Belize is the same as in the United States:
110 volts A.C. power is provided throughout the country. In most
parts of the country, power supply is fairly stable and reliable.
Service is fair and it is necessary for hotels wanting to deliver luxury
class service to install backup generators. Continuity of electricity is
between 90% and 95%.
Water
Quality Belize tap water is treated in cities and towns. Tap water
and ice in beverages are very safe to consume. Bottled water is also
available throughout the country.

clothing, preferably made of natural materials. Check with your

MAP OF BELIZE
By Road
Driving to Belize can be an adventure with much to see and do.
Depending upon the route, the trip from the U.S. through Mexico
is between 1,350 and 2,000 miles. Traveling to Belize via Cancun,
Mexico City and Chetumal is comfortable, relatively fast and
inexpensive. All-weather highways connect Mexican cities with the
border city of Chetumal, from which there are regularly scheduled
buses to Belize City. ADO Buses run between Cancun and Belize.
Regular bus services operate between Tikal (Flores) in Guatemala
and Belize City.
By Sea
For travelers touring Central America, traveling to and from Belize
by boat is a viable option. There are regularly scheduled water taxis
that shuttle from Punta Gorda in southern Belize to Guatemala and
Honduras. Water Taxis also run between Chetumal, Mexico and
San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.
www.TravelBelize.org 9
By Bus
The least expensive way to get around Belize is by bus, with Belize
City and Belmopan serving as the central bus depots for travel to the
districts. Buses travel to and from the towns several times daily with
stops along the highway at villages and visitor attractions. However,
some of the more remote villages may have only daily service. Please
check for altered schedules on Belize’s major holidays.
By Road
Belize’s major highways are paved and offer breathtaking views of
the Belizean countryside. Many of the side roads to villages and
attractions are graded dirt roads. Belize traffic laws are standard
international laws and all driving in Belize is done on the right side
of the road.
Rental vehicles are available at the PGIA airport, Belize City and
in many towns. Drivers must hold a valid international driver’s
license, which can be used for up to 90 days. Gas stations are located
in major towns and cities but are less common on the highways and
in the villages.
By Boat
Both the Belize Marine Terminal and Fort Street Tourism Village
Water Taxi Terminal provide hourly water taxi service to the
popular island destinations of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.
Water Taxis are also available between Caye Caulker and San Pedro
and from San Pedro to Corozal Town.
Licensed tour operators offer tours and transfers from Belize City,
Dangriga, Hopkins, Placencia and Punta Gorda to the outer atolls
and offshore islands.

ISLANDS AND MARINE
Turneffe Atoll
Turneffe is the closest to the mainland of Belize’s three atolls and
only a short distance from the Barrier Reef. Surrounded by small
orchid-strung mangrove islands, the spectacular underwater
formations make this a popular dive and fishing location.

ISLANDS AND MARINE
Other Islands
Hundreds of islands of various sizes and shapes dot the coast-
line along the entire length of the Belize Barrier Reef. Man-
grove-entwined islands sit beside white coral sand beaches.
Some offer the opportunity to access natural attractions,
such as bird sanctuaries, while others are near whale shark
spawning sites.

REEF AND BEACHES
With the protection of the reef the entire length of Belize, the
waters just off the coastline are a sanctuary for watersports
enthusiasts. Whether you’re an expert, or there’s an activity
you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t, Belize has the outfitters
and instructors to get you set up. Choose from a variety of
exciting activities, any one of which will make a great story once
you return to the real world.
SCUBA Diving
Become a voyager to a fascinating realm where the pace of life
is dictated by the tides. With underwater visibility routinely
extending to 200 feet, divers of all ages and abilities find their
way to Belize. In fact, the diving is so extraordinary in Belize,
we have visitors who return year after year and do nothing
else. Divers are eager to explore the spur and groove coral
formations and sheer walls along the length of the reef. Get
certified before your visit, or take introductory courses with
Snorkeling
Floating atop the warm, clear, turquoise waters with a mask
and snorkel, provides an exciting glimpse into Belize’s
underwater glories and is a “must see” even for the first-time
snorkeler. Knowledgeable local guides will help you explore
the kaleidoscope of color found in hard and soft corals, vibrant
sponges and more than 500 species of fish. Swim with the
gentle rays and docile nurse sharks in waist-deep water or
enjoy the view from 20 feet above the water’s surface. Shark
Ray Alley is among the most popular snorkeling sites in Belize.
Swimming
Inside the reef along the welcoming beaches, young and old can
play together all day. Perfect for families with small children,
or for the young at heart, Belize’s gradual sandy beaches and
gentle surf make swimming
easy and fun. You may even
find some exotic shells among
the sand.
Fishing
No matter what your level of
expertise or interest, Belize
has world-class fishing from
Bacalar Chico in the north to
Punta Icacos Lagoon in the
south. The reef, flats and grass
beds around mangrove islands
and coastal lagoons throughout
the country provide the year-
round opportunity for fly-
fishing’s “Grand Slam” – permit, bonefish and tarpon in a
single day. Belize – especially the northern Savannah flats – is
the only place outside of South Florida that enables anglers
to sight-cast for tarpon. The many river mouths are home to
snook, tarpon and jacks. Near the Barrier Reef, spend a day or
hour fishing for grouper, barracuda or snapper. And for the
adventurous, go offshore for big game fish, including marlin,
wahoo, bonito and kingfish. To protect our delicate ecosystem,
Belize practices “catch and release” sport fishing.

Paddle Boarding
It’s a sport that’s surging in popularity. A great workout and a
great way to get around the beaches quickly, you definitely have
to try paddle boarding while exploring Belize. The pros make it
look easy, and it takes some practice to get your balance right,
but it is just as fun learning in our warm coastal waters as it is
to master.
Sailing
Sailing inside the protected length of Belize’s Barrier Reef allows
visitors to explore the islands and snorkel among the patch
reefs. Imagine cruising along with just the noise of the wind in
the sails and the waves against the bow. Once the rhythms and
adventure of sailing get in your blood, you’re hooked for life.
Whether on a private vessel making port, or looking for a bare
boat charter, Belize has dependable facilities and numerous
professional operators ready to meet your cruising needs.
Wind Sports
The constant trade winds and
wide expanse of calm waters
inside the barrier reef and
along the coast make it an ideal
playground for sports such as
wind surfing and kite surfing/
boarding. Whether you’re an
expert or just learning, it’s an
amazing way to be one with
the wind and fly across the
water.
Parasailing
Floating serenely above the
reef and beaches offers a
bird’s-eye-view of paradise.
Parasailing requires nothing
more athletic than the thirst
for adventure. You may want to remember your camera for
some unprecedented perspectives of Belize.

smells, the cave’s cool breath on your warm skin. When you step
away from the familiar, your senses reach out like antennae.
Much of the geological structure of Belize is porous karst
limestone, which is ideal for the formation of underground caves
and rivers. Although many mythic caves have been known for
years, everyday spelunkers are still discovering new ones. Expert
cave divers sponsored by the National Geographic Society have
found Central America’s longest cave system on the Chiquibul
River in the Maya Mountains. Here too, there is evidence the
Maya used these underground worlds for religious ceremonies.
Hokeb Ha Cave
On a shady hillside near the village of Blue Creek is Hokeb
Ha Cave. According to archaeologists, the discovery of several
ceramic and ceremonial altars reveal that the Maya used this
cave in the Late Classic Period.
Caves Branch
Flowing west of the Sibun River, Caves Branch River carves into
limestone walls deposited by ancient reefs to form a massive
cave system. The river dips in and out of these caves, allowing
guests to float through the filtered light of the jungle foliage.
Fertility gods, 1,000-year-old pottery shards and embedded
human footprints can be seen along the way.

CULTURE AND PEOPLE
Maya
The Maya are the first known inhabitants of Belize, governing
an amazingly advanced civilization more than 2,000 years ago.
The Maya, who have preserved many traditional customs and
spiritual practices, comprise 10% of Belize’s population. An
incredibly unique feature of the Maya Home Stay Network
enables guests to stay with Maya families. The Maya welcome
guests to participate in daily activities, such as clay pot making,
tortilla preparation, farming, roof thatching, identifying
traditional medicine and playing marimba music. Belize is
home to the largest population of Maya per capita.
Mestizo
The Mestizo of Belize are a
subtle reminder of Belize’s
Spanish roots. Descendants
of Maya and Spanish set-
tlers, who immigrated to Be-
lize during the Caste Wars of
the Yucatan, the Mestizo live
predominately in northern
and western Belize. Rich fla-
vorful soups such as Relleno,
Chimole and Escabeche and
widespread colorful festivals
contribute to the Belizean
identity.
Garifuna
November 19 commemorates the
arrival in 1823 of the Garifuna,
descendants of Carib, Arawak
and West African people and
their contribution to the Belizean
landscape. The rich culture of the
Garifuna includes the hypnotic
drumbeat of popular Punta
music and long-standing healing
traditions. In 2001, UNESCO
proclaimed the Garifuna
language, music and dance to be
among the masterpieces of the
Oral and Intangible Heritage of
Humanity.

CULTURE AND PEOPLE
Mennonite
Two different Mennonite sects of German ancestry make
their home in Belize. Their distinct communities maintain
long-standing religious practices, customs and lifestyles.
Both groups are prolific farmers. The traditional sect shun the
combustion engine and wear customary clothing; whereas
the more modern sect utilizes state-of-the-art machinery
and farming practices and is an integral part of the Belizean
economy.
Arabs
Lebanese, Palestinians and Syrians make up a small but
industrious group in Belize. Arriving in the late 19th century,
Chinese
In 1865, about 470 Chinese laborers arrived in Belize to work
on newly established sugar estates in the Corozal and Orange
Walk Districts. This distinct group has quickly integrated
into Belizean society. Hard working and diligent, they have
maintained a strong community throughout Belize and operate
primarily in the restaurant and merchant businesses.
Ethnic Cuisine
As the Caribbean gateway to Central America, Belize is a
treasury of people, tastes, specialities, styles and traditions from
cultures all over the world. When all of these incredibly diverse
and delicious influences comingle in the kitchen, your palate is
rewarded with uniquely delectable dishes and beverages. Visit

Caving
Worlds converge in Belize. The land surface is underlined by
the most extensive network of limestone caves and sinkholes
in Central America, with magnificent natural formations
such as stalactites and stalagmites, crystal caverns and
underground waterfalls. Other caves house secrets of Belize’s
Maya heritage, including intact pottery and human skeletal
remains. Don’t forget the flash on your camera.

Belize’s ziplining, rappelling and aerial canopy tours are
first-class, high-adventure trips for adrenaline junkies and
thrill seekers. On the canopy tour, traverse from one tree

neighbors, and is the birthplace and home of the Mestizos.
Today, the district encompasses a diverse population of ethnic
backgrounds that have blended to give the people a distinctively
relaxed outlook on life, making Corozal a tranquil paradise. The
warm and welcoming locals provide a friendly haven away from
the bustle of the tourist track.
Corozal Town
Resting along the shore of the Corozal Bay, this cozy town is
caressed by the tradewinds. With a population of only 9,100,
Corozal is considered to be the most peaceful of all Belizean
municipalities. Calming emerald waters of the Corozal Bay,
charming resorts, shady parks, and the warmth of the people
have lured many visitors and retirees from North America
and Europe into making this district their hometown.
The town’s name is derived from the cohune palms that
dominated the landscape when the first Mestizos arrived.
The local economy is primarily based on the sugar industry
but is also complemented by other agriculture activities and
fishing. Located only 10 miles from the Mexican border,
Corozal Town is the perfect hub to visit archaeological sites,
islands, reefs and all other destinations.

Cerro Maya
Cerro Maya was the first
Maya trading center built
along the seaside in 50
B.C. To visit this unique
archaeological site, one may
choose between a guided tour by boat or an adventurous trip
by road. While the boat trip to Cerros takes approximately
15 minutes across the bay, the road tour provides visitors
with the opportunity to travel back in time when crossing the
river by a manual ferry and driving through typical Mestizo
villages. Tours can be arranged at any resort located in the
town.
COROZAL DISTRICT
During the peak of the Maya civilization, Progresso Lagoon
served as a busy marine highway for merchants to trade their
goods, as well as a strategic military lookout post. Today,
visitors enjoy the calm waters of the lagoon and equally
tranquil village life.
Sarteneja Village
Sarteneja, a typical Mestizo fishing community, is one of
the gems of northern Belize. This picturesque fishing village
can be reached by boat or by road across two hand-powered
ferries. This small village is home to one of the largest fleets of
indigenous fishing crafts in the country. Sailboats with crews
of 5 to10 men venture south for weeks harvesting fish, conch
and lobsters. Hire a fisherman to take you to the archaeological
site of Cerros to the west, or Rocky Point, part of the Bacalar
Chico National Park, to the east.
Consejo Shores
Seven miles north of Corozal Town sits Consejo Shores, home
to many retirees, who mix easily with the native population.
The seafront parks sloping into shallow, sandy waters are ideal
swimming grounds for families.

Blue Creek
Blue Creek is a Mennonite village settled in the early 1950s.
Primarily an agricultural community, the inhabitants are also
well known for furniture manufacturing and construction
services. Perched atop a hill overlooking the community is a
small bed and breakfast facility, offering a chance to experience
the rural lifestyle of Blue Creek. The community is also the
gateway to the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area.

Lamanai
Lamanai, meaning “submerged crocodile” in the Maya lan-
guage, is home to the second largest Pre-Classic Maya struc-
ture and possibly the most interesting archeological site in Be-
lize. The Lamanai temple complex sits atop the western bluff
of the New River Lagoon and is surrounded by pristine rain
forest teeming with black howler monkeys. Lamanai was oc-
cupied continuously for more than 3,000 years and its remote-
ness contributed to its continuous occupation, well beyond
most other Maya sites. Set in tropical forest and providing
spectacular views from several of its large temples, Lamanai
provides a unique experience into the culture of the Maya
and the biological diversity of the tropical forest. A scenic and
thrilling 26-mile boat ride up the New River is the easiest way
to get to Lamanai.

and a diverse array of unique discoveries awaits you in the
Belize District. Belize City is home to the country’s commercial
center and the largest concentration of Belizeans. A bustling port
city, with the only hand-cranked bridge in Central America,
Belize City features the country’s largest hotels and conference
facilities, professional services, a cruise-passenger terminal,
as well as restaurants, bars, nightlife and numerous historical
sites. Inland waterways, once busy thoroughfare for colonial
mahogany cutters, cross much of the District, creating habitats
for an abundance of wildlife. Offshore islands offer idyllic day
tours for snorkeling, diving and relaxing.
House of Culture
In 1814, the official residence of the British Governor of Belize
was a symbol of British colonial rule. In 1996, “Government
House” was renamed the “House of Culture” and an extensive
renovation project was undertaken to retain the architectural
integrity of the home. Today, the House of Culture hosts
cultural exhibits, events and musical performances.

Mountain Pine Ridge
CAYO DISTRICT
Spanish Lookout
At Spanish Lookout, you can encounter a modern sect of
Belize’s Mennonite population residing in a landscape of
rolling hills. Since arriving in 1958, Mennonite communities
have become an integral part of the Belizean economy in a
variety of ways - poultry and dairy farming, hardware and
equipment supply.
CAYO DISTRICT
Just off the main road in the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve,
before reaching Augustine Village, you’ll find the popular Rio
on Pools. Through the expanse of pine forest the river spills
over large granite ledges and rocks, making small waterfalls
and cool round pools. On the bank of the river is a picnic area
to relax and watch swimmers enjoying the troughs, pools and
natural waterslides made smooth by the rushing water.
Aguacate Lagoon
About 20 minutes from “downtown,” Spanish Lookout is a
quiet retreat near the large and refreshing Aguacate Lagoon.
Amenities include trails for hiking and birdwatching and a
thatched shed for picnicking.
SISE Center
The SISE Center located in downtown San Ignacio explores
the traditions of the people of the Cayo region, in addition
to offering a venue for the expression of today’s values and
culture.

Visitors to the Green Iguana Project and adjacent Medicinal
Jungle Trail have the opportunity to smell or taste the herbs
that are frequently used by locals as remedies or cures to eve-
ryday illnesses. Informed guides will also provide informative
explanations about their uses. A popular part of the program
is the highly visited and interactive conservation project of
the Green Iguana, where bright green, juvenile iguanas are
cared for until they are ready to be released into the wild.
Added to the exhibit are some of Belize’s native wood turtles
that spend much of their time wading in shallow pools.
El Pilar
Located about 12 miles northwest of San Ignacio, El Pilar is
an ancient Maya city center located on the Belize-Guatemala
border. The largest known Maya site in the Belize River area,
El Pilar features more 25 plazas and hundreds of other ancient
structures. At its height, El Pilar housed more than 20,000
people. The name “El Pilar” is Spanish for “watering basin,”
reflecting the abundance of water in the area, which is rare for
a Maya city. For conservation purposes, most structures and
monuments are not exposed. A house site called Tzunu’un is
fully exposed, and an on-site forest garden provides a glimpse
into traditional Maya agriculture.

The love affair between Mother Earth
and Father Sky created this utopia
known as the district of Stann Creek.
Dangriga Town
The district’s largest town is located 55 miles from Belmopan
and 107 miles from Belize City. With a population of some
11,600 people, the vibrant Garifuna community of Dangriga
offers art, music and exotic dishes, along with the annual
November 19th re-enactment of their early 1800s arrival on
Belize’s shores.
Hopkins Village
For authentic Garifuna culture and wide expanses of gold
sand beaches, visit the village of Hopkins, just 12 miles
from Dangriga. Once a sleepy fishing village, in recent years
Hopkins has become a popular tourist destination with
amenities ranging from budget to luxury. Whether visitors
want to unwind on the beach, eat fresh fish, kayak along the
shore, or take day tours to the reef and rain forest, there is
plenty to keep you busy.

front door. You must go out into the world and invest yourself
in evocative opportunities that enhance your world view.
And the Toledo District is chock full of such opportunities.
Offering a cultural blend of traditional Mopan Maya and
Kek’chi farmers along with a healthy East Indian population,
Toledo is home to agriculture, rain forest habitat with intricate
caves, the famous Cacao Festival, incredible wildlife and some
of the most beautiful offshore islands found in Belize. For an
authentic cultural experience, stay at a traditional Maya home
and partake in their daily activities.

Barranco Village
Barranco is Belize’s southern-
most coastal village. Looking
southeast, the hills of Honduras
are visible. Just southwest of Bar-
ranco is the Sarstoon-Temash
National Park. The pleasant drive
to Barranco from the Southern
Highway passes through several
small Maya villages and provides
excellent birdwatching opportu-
nities. Barranco is a traditional
Garifuna village, with a popula-
tion of about 200 people.
TOLEDO DISTRICT
Comprised of a large bay containing more than 100 small
mangrove islands with four major rivers draining into this
bight, the influx of nutrient-laden sediments makes this a
prime feeding ground for marine fish, manatee and dolphin.
Fishermen find the coral shoals, river mouths and channels to
be excellent fishing grounds.

The beautiful life you’ve imagined for
yourself exists in Belize.
SPECIAL INTERESTS
you put on this earth to do? For the special-interest traveler,
Belize offers a great diversity of attractions and activities at a
variety of user levels. Whether traveling alone, with a group or
with family, the options are endless.
Green Travel
Unspoiled Belize practically created sustainable tourism
decades before the rest of the world caught on. Throughout
the country, you’ll find spectacular natural attractions that
remain practically unchanged from our pioneer days. National
parks, reserves and preserves dominate the land and sea and
protect the habitats and ecosystems of an array of plant,
animal and marine species. Belize features one of the only
jaguar preserves in the world, a baboon sanctuary, butterfly
farms and its 185-mile barrier reef has been designated World
Heritage Status by UNESCO.
Wedding/Honeymoon
Every day in Belize feels like a special occasion. However,
there’s no better place for the wedding or honeymoon of a
lifetime. In fact, Brides magazine just named Belize as the
up-and-coming honeymoon destination. With picturesque
backdrops and amazing weather, Belize combines the perfect
elements to create the setting of your dreams. Whether a
ceremony at an ancient Maya temple or barefoot on a private
island, if you can imagine it, there are Belizean hotels and
professional wedding planners to arrange it. And if you want
your honeymoon to be adventurous, or quiet and private,
Belize offers the luxury of a private island or jungle lodge,
to the warmth of a beachfront hotel or rural cottage. Cruise
tourists can also get married in one day while visiting Belize
once they have followed all requirements.

Diving and Snorkeling
SPECIAL INTERESTS
Divers flock to the legendary Blue Hole to check that box on their
“must-do” list. Whether you have years of experience, or you’ve
always been curious to explore the incredible world under the
waves, Belize makes it easy. With hundreds of tropical islands and
atolls, and the reef just off the coast and running the length of
the country, diving and snorkeling opportunities are everywhere.
Meet rays and grouper face-to-face. Glide gently over the coral
and see it teeming with exotic sea life. Imagine the excitement
of a chance encounter with an eel or a docile whale shark. The
experience is so magical, surely it won’t be the last time you swim
with the fishes in Belize.
Fishing
Whether fly fishing
or using conventional
tackle, Belize has the
natural structure to at-
tract and maintain a bountiful fishery. Three of the top-10 per-
mit destinations are in Belize, and it’s the only place other than
South Florida that offers classic sight-fishing for tarpon. Flats, la-
goons, islands, atolls, the barrier reef, it all provides unparalleled
opportunities to fish an amazing array of species. Where else
could you have the ability to go after bonefish, tarpon, permit,
snook, jacks, grouper, barracuda, snapper, bonito, sailfish and
marlin all in the same week? Expert guides and lodges are readily
available throughout the country.

Couples/Romance
SPECIAL INTERESTS
The experiences you’ll discover in Belize will stir emotions
dwelling deep inside you. Yet every experience is made better
by sharing it with the one you love. And whether you want
to share adventure or a nap in a hammock on the beach,
Belize has created just the right conditions for couples to lose
themselves in the moment and be with one another. From
dining to amorous hotel recommendations, from spa packages
to excursions, Belize will feel like your own romantic secret.
Reconnecting has never felt so good.
Birding
Blend quietly into the forest, then watch and hear it come alive
with a dazzling variety of birds and birdsong. With so much of
the country dedicated to national parks and protected forest,
a vast multitude of spectacular native and migratory birds
pose willingly for the camera. With more than 500 species
of indigenous birds, the serious birder will certainly want to
seek out the flocks of scarlet macaws, the graceful jabiru stork
with an eight-foot wingspan, and Belize’s national bird—the
colorful keel-billed toucan.
