Meccano References

So, where do I get much of my information? Here are the references I use most. Also, I use 'DMS' (or sometimes 'EMP') in various places on this site, and here are the explanations. Author Title Date Publisher The Meccanoman's Club Comments Known as DMS

The Development 1972; Hauton, R. R. and of the Meccano supplements A. Hindemarsh System 1975 and 1982

This work describes Meccano parts and their variations. Index numbers are assigned to each variation, allowing easy discussion of parts variations. Dates of introduction and (sometimes) obsolescence are also included. Available from M. W. Models - see their website http://www.btinternet.com/~mwmodels.meccano/ Blakeborough, Don Encyclopedia of Meccano Parts (6 volumes) 1992? Self published Follows on to DMS; known as EMP

This is an expansion and re-arrangement of DMS, and includes drawings of most parts. Parts are arranged in part number order, and each part number has a page of description (and DMS references), and a page of drawing(s). This is the reference I now use most of the time - it is MUCH more convenient than DMS. Available through http://www.dalefield.com/meccinv/empprinted.html. Love, Bert and Jim Gamble The Meccano System 1986 New Cavendish Books

This is THE reference on the history of Meccano. M. W. Models still list this book; see their webpage mentioned above. Return to the Meccano in the United States Page. This page new 23 December 2001. Copyright 2001 Kendrick Bisset

Meccano in the United States

Meccano is a metal construction toy, using perforated metal shapes, nuts and bolts to assemble all sorts of things. Erector is a similar system which is much better known in the United States. Meccano was invented by Frank Hornby in England in 1901, and spread throughout the world. It was imported into the US by 1909, and a US Meccano Company was formed in 1913. (Erector was invented in the US by A. C. Gilbert in 1912.) A factory to manufacture Meccano was established in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1922. Around 1928 or 1929, the US Meccano Company was purchased by A. C. Gilbert. The Meccano factory was closed about 1930, and production moved to the Erector factory in New Haven, Connecticut. Meccano sets continued in production for a few years, and the name was used on a number of other toys, such as microscopes. The construction sets were made in the US as late as 1938. This site is to share what I have learned about Meccano in the United States, primarily in the period from 1909 through 1938. I hope that visitors will be able to add to (or correct!) information presented here. Eventually, I hope to publish this and other information in book form - perhaps I will be able to get back to work on the book once this website is takes less of my time! Why a separate site for US Meccano? See the What Distinguishes US Meccano page. (10 March 2001) The Outfits page has pictures and other information on US Meccano outfits (sets). A table of US Meccano Outfit Prices is available here. (15 April 2002)

The Parts page has illustrations of some Meccano parts and variations. Many of the items that were in the "Puzzles" and "Pictures" pages are now shown here. (15 April 2002) I have a table of US Meccano manuals, in .PDF format. The last page is a revision page, so you can see what has been changed. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to read these files!(13 November 2001) While I have a listing of US Meccano Manuals, much information needs pictures. US Manual Pictures will have scans of interesting manuals. I have started to add catalogs here, too - so far only from 1927. More will be added as time goes on, but if you would like to see a particular manual or catalog, please ask. As indicated in the manual table, some manuals listed are not in my collection, so the scans will not be in color. Contributions and requests are welcome! (14 September 2001)

Meccano Ltd. (in England) published a magazine for many years for Meccano enthusiasts. The magazine actually appeared first in the United States in 1916, and was published in the US until 1927. The early magazines (both British and US versions) are not common, but the entire British publishing history is well documented (see Joseph Manduca, The Meccano Magazine, New Cavendish Books, London, 1987). It is not clear which issues were printed in the US - so I have prepared a table of US Meccano Magazines listing known and (in italics) possible issues. This is a web page, so you do NOT need Acrobat Reader. The question marks indicate pure conjecture - if anyone knows of any of these issues, or has any further information, please (PLEASE!) let me know. (2 August 2001) Many websites have a "FAQ" (Frequently Asked Questions) area. I will add such a page if there is interest, but instead, I have a Questions page. Here, you will find the questions I have about Meccano in the US. If you can answer any of these questions, preferably WITH DOCUMENTATION, PLEASE let me know! [This page combines the Burning Questions and Simmering Puzzles pages. The parts have moved to the Parts page - see the link above. (1 May 2002)] For those who want to know more about Meccano in general, follow the links to other websites by using the Meccano Webring icon at the bottom of this page, or for a few personal sites, click here. Several people have asked where Meccano can be found. It is now available again in the US (at least in Western New York State), and is sold (usually) as Erector. Brio is the US distributor, so check out toy stores which carry Brio, or check their website www.briotoy.com (3 December 2001). This site is NOT associated with the manufacturer of Meccano; I am an individual interested in the history of Meccano, primarily in the United States from 1909 through the Second World War. My name is Kendrick Bisset; I may be reached at kendrick.dgb.dgb@worldnet.att.net (but you must delete the second ".dgb"!). I live near Rochester, New York. Copyright 2001 Kendrick Bisset. The names "Meccano" and "Erector" are trademarks, presently owned by Meccano S.N. of France (which is in turn owned by Nikko Toys), and are used here to identify the products. Nikko has a website, but Meccano is not mentioned (at least not the last time I looked).

A Short History of Cabaret Mechanical Theatre We are moving (again!). See the news Tel: 020 7379 7961

CMT started life as a slightly odd crafts shop

called Cabaret in Falmouth, Cornwall. It was opened in 1979 by Sue Jackson and sold Peter Markey's simple wooden toys alongside knitwear and ceramics. With the arrival of Paul Spooner, it wasn't long before the mechanical pieces started displacing the other crafts. Sue began collecting and the work she kept remained in the shop. She could see how much pleasure they gave to her customers - even though they were often told that they could turn the handles but they couldn't buy.

Two Harpies / Sirens by Paul Spooner

When Paul Spooner made a large coin-operated skeleton (The Last Judgement) for the shop window it was clear that people would pay to bring automata to life and so in May 1983, still in Falmouth, Cabaret Mechanical Theatre began and the customers now paid to turn handles and press buttons. The collection was largely made up of small handcranked pieces by Peter Markey and Paul Spooner. For protection most of them were encased and motorised so that they could be operated by push button. Sue also commissioned and bought larger one-off machines like Spooner's 'The Dream'. She also added work by Ron Fuller and Richard Windley. It was soon realised that in order to continue expanding the exhibition it would have to move from Cornwall. CMT opened in Covent Garden, London in 1985, with new work by Tim Hunkin and a little later, Michael Howard. Over the following decade the world of Cabaret Mechanical Theatre has continued expanding. The shop has a large range of handmade automata which cannot be bought anywhere else, it also sells kits, card cut-outs and videos. There have been exhibitions in Japan and Europe and many projects involving larger scale work. The collection continues to grow organically without any preconceived idea in mind, yet the pieces tend to share an eccentricity, a wry sense of humour and a slightly shrewd way of looking at the world. Perhaps what ultimately unifies the collection are the personal tastes and preferences of Sue Jackson, who still owns and runs the show. Cabaret continues to occupy the strange, shifting ground between art, craft and business. CMT was never conceived as a way of making money. For Sue it is always a labour of love. It receives no subsidies or sponsorship, yet it helps to support a number of crafts people. CMT endeavours to remain a haven of wit, intelligence and

individuality in an increasingly homogenous and mass-produced world. During Summer 2000, the main collection was on display at The Kursaal, Southend-on-Sea. The exhibition has now been removed for restoration. See the news page for the latest information.

CABARET MECHANICAL MOVEMENT Making Automata is hard. Making other sorts of three dimensional objects can also be hard, but the extra dimension of movement seems to add a disproportionate amount of difficulty. For most people, especially those untrained in engineering skills, getting to the point where making mechanical devices is easy, can be a long and frustrating task. Then again, there are many people who have a sound understanding of engineering but cant even draw a horse. These things can be learnt. This book does not teach you how to draw a horse, but it does remove the mystery that surrounds the world of mechanisms and the business of making things move. Cabaret Mechanical Movement contains a lot of theory but its also

packed with practical tips and ideas for making your own automata, moving toys or mechanical sculpture. This book is published by Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, a museum which has delighted its visitors with witty examples of the automata makers art for over 15 years.

Peter Markey
Peter Markey (b. 1930) studied painting at Swansea Art College and taught art for 25 years in secondary schools. He left teaching in 1980 and began making simple wooden automata after someone innocently suggested that he try making his footballer sculptures move. This coincided with the opening of Cabaret in Falmouth where he lived. Peter has had many exhibitions of his mechanical work and his paintings. His work is known for it's simplicity of design and the use of bright colours. He makes little attempt at realistic representation and never carves the wood he uses. This means that square-shaped wood results in square-headed people and animals. The Runners - an early mechanical Peter is fascinated by the seemingly ridiculous idea of trying to produce wave-like motions from wood. He has made many 'wave machines' using a variety of simple but effective mechanisms. Over recent years, in his efforts to find simpler and faster ways of working, Peter has often left his work unpainted. Peter claims that his models have a great tolerance for poor workmanship but despite their apparent simplicity many imitators have failed to

produce results of such charm. He says that he makes things because he can't stop.

Paul Spooner
Paul Spooner was born in Preston, Lancashire in 1948. He had mechanical interests from an early age. In 1964 he completed a preDiploma course at Lancaster College of Art where he made a clock and a steam engine from wood. At Cardiff from 1966 to 1969 he studied Art and Design, specialising in mechanical sculpture. In 1974 Paul moved to Stithians, Cornwall. He made weaving looms for his wife Sue, but mainly worked as a van driver. It wasn't until 1981 that he made his first edition featuring the Egyptian Jackal-headed God, Anubis. For the next two years he made small machines usually sold in limited editions through Cabaret in Falmouth. In 1983 Cabaret became a Mechanical Theatre and in 1985 it opened in Covent Garden. Currently, over 40 of Paul Spooner's machines can be seen working here. Since 1986 Paul has

Paul Spooner at Cape Canaveral

collaborated with Matthew Smith on the design of a series of small editions. These are still made regularly for CMT by Matthew under the name of The Fourteen Ball Toy Co. Paul has also produced two card cutout books; Spooner's Moving Animals and The Museum of the Mind, as well as the children's book, Red Roger.

Manet's Olympia

Detail of Heaven. Built for The Ride of Life

In 1989 he was one of the main artists involved in designing and building the Ride of Life. Since then he has a had number of commissions for larger work including exhibits for the Science Museum and a group of life-size animated figures for Louis Vuitton, the luggage maker (1995). His television programme, Mechanisms (part of the Machinations series), was broadcast by Channel 4 in 1995. Prototype walking figure Paul Spooner's work combines humour and an obsessive attention to detail with delightful and intriguing mechanisms.

"My work as an artist / mechanic amounts to a constant pursuit of elegance and simplicity. I

haven't caught up with either yet because I don't know how to finish things. Except sometimes. And even then I'm not sure."

Paul Spooner's current piece, The Zen Gardener and his Pupil. When the monk with the rake has carefully made a zigzag pattern in the sand the monk with the shovel destroys it.

Keith Newstead
Keith Newstead (b. 1956) studied at Barking College of Art and Technology. After short-lived careers on a paper round in Finland and as a Graphic Designer, he became a motorcycle despatch rider in London for 10 years. During this time he also made and sold Jewellery. Keith counts his childhood memories of the machines in the Penny Arcade at Southend, as being one of the most important influences on his work. When he saw a TV film on David Secrett (Automata Maker) he was inspired to start making his own machines. His work on display at Cabaret Mechanical Theatre includes The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. This is a peep-show which depicts a train carriage of city-types on their way to work when one of them mysteriously transforms into an alien.

Keith Newstead with Satellite

One of a series of Dragons Recently he has begun designing automata for manufacture by CMT crafts people in limited editions. This enables him to concentrate on one-off and coinoperated pieces. He has also produced many mechanical card cutouts. Although Keith is often described as a newcomer to the field, the reality is that he spent nearly 10 years acquiring the necessary skills before he was able to produce his automata successfully.

Tim Hunkin outside his RubberWorld (2000)

Tim Hunkin
Tim Hunkin (b. 1950) was educated as engineer but became a cartoonist for The Observer's Sunday magazine. He researched and drew a strip called The Rudiments of Wisdom for fourteen years. These cartoons have been compiled into a 360 page book, modestly titled, Almost Everything There is to Know. (Currently out of print) Tim has built coin-operated machines intermittently since he was a child. He had a show at the ICA in 1981 called The Disgusting Spectacle (named after the wooden piece illustrated here which now resides in Cabaret Mechanical Theatre). This was followed by The Art Gallery, a touring show of coin-operated characters looking at and responding to, works of art. The Disgusting Spectacle - coin-op Tim saw the coin mechanism as a good way to

circumvent the traditional gallery / artist / collector relationships but he has since abandoned the fine art world. He has made various clocks for public spaces. e.g. The Water Clock in Covent Garden (with Andy Plant). He was one of the main artists involved in the design and making of the Ride of Life. (A million pound project designed for a shopping centre which was never installed but somehow acquired a cult status. Tim has made TV three series demystify everyday household and office machines for Channel 4, called The Secret Life of Machines. These have been shown all over the world via The Discovery Channel. In 1995 he completed a new gallery for the Science museum called The Secret Life of the Home. As well as enlivening the collection of domestic appliances and gadgets with his usual humour and insight, Tim has stuffed the gallery with fun things to do. In 1998 he started collaborating with Sarah Angliss and Will Jackson and formed Mongrel Media, researching, curating, designing and fabricating exhibitions for museums.

Giant Man

There are currently 8 of Tim's coin-operated pieces in CMT. His figures capture human gestures perfectly with the simplest of movements, perfect timing and minimal modelling. The most recent, the Frisker, looks industrial, has no figure but it's thick rubber gloves will give you an intimate body search if you're feeling insecure.

Exploding computer robot built for the end of The Secret Life of the Word Processor (Channel 4)

Recently:
Working on a Mongrel Media commission to curate, design and build the exhibits for a visitor centre for the Eden project in Cornwall. Particularly enjoying converting one garden shed into a cinema and another into Rubberworld. Building a collection box for a medieval castle in Jersey on the theme of Tax Evasion (Jersey is a British Tax haven) Cinema for Eden Project Researching and curating an exhibition about the Cold War for the Science Museum, in collaboration with Sarah Angliss. This involved unearthing a fabulous collection of objects, photos and films recently given to the museum by the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough. Designing and building a large interactive exhibit about fear and phobias for The Museum of the Emotions in collaboration with Sarah Angliss. This includes a very dark corridor where the visitor experiences the tingler and the chiller, the International Bureau of Stimulation and Assessment, and a sealed cabinet of phobias. Performing 1,000 years of Cheating at Science with Sarah Angliss at the Edinburgh Science festival. This includes perpetual motion machines and even dancing maggots. (see poster left)

Coming soon:
He will be at the Science museum, performing How to Spot a Human with Sarah Angliss, August 17, 20. He will be performing How to Cheat at Art at the Royal Institution on Sept 20th (limited tickets available). The Human Factor exhibition on ergonomics by Mongrel Media will open at The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry on September 22.

g Penguin

How Does It Work?

Wheel gear to side gear ratio = 1 : 1 Side gear to Cluster gear ratio = 1 : 1 Cluster gear to Center gear ratio = 2 : 1 Wheel diameter = 1/2 spacing between wheels

The Side gear assemblies are keyed to the main axle by means of set screws, as shown in the photo below.

The Cluster gear assembly consists of two gears that are pinned together so that they rotate as one. It is free to "float" on the main axle.

The main axle passes through, and is free to rotate within, the plexiglass body. Note the clearance hole in the Center gearshaft

The wheels are free to rotate on the main axle. An "E" clip keeps them in place. The net result of this geartrain is that the Penguin (the center gear) always points in the same direction. Pulled forward, pushed backward, turned left or turned right the Penguin's orientation never changes. Harry Siebert uncovered this clever design while researching South Pointing Chariots. Please visit "The Center for South Pointing Chariot Research and Development"

Scale Models
To get a hold on the wealth of material on South Pointing Chariots, three basic kinds of models can be defined:

Historical Models
The "classic" model to most people, they resemble the real (or imagined) thing as close as possible, only at a reduced size. Visit our gallery !

Mathematical Models
In our modern times modeling no longer means cut fingers and glue on the carpet, but bits and bytes on floppy disks and animations on the computer screen. See what we found yet !

Functional Models
Many a technical system is better understood if stripped down to the elementary, leaving away all the distracting details or even turning to transparent material. To understand a differential gear, this approach proves especially advantageous. Have a look yourself !

Not so Functional Specimen...

It's an old saying that things not working as intended can still be sold as "Art" - THEIR words, not mine ! Well, now and then an artist discovers the South Pointing Chariot and incorporates it into his/her opus. Let Your imagination flow !

Functional Models
The things on this site are not meant to be original chinese (You guessed so, right ?). Nonetheless they have their very own appeal ! The oldest published design I found yet was from Mr. M.J. Oliver, printed in The Meccano Magazine, Jan 1957. It is based on the description given two years earlier by Mr. Cousins Twenty (!) years later, in 1977, Mr. Terry Morris revived the previous design in another article in THe Meccano Magazine. Apart from more stylish wheels

this model adds little new insight.

This very pretty acrylic model of the Lanchester type was build by Richard Egge, to be contacted over this site at http://www.geocities.com/~rrice2.

He has a full set of drawings for it as well !

These two models to the Japanese design were found at www.suelab.nuem.nagoya~u.ac.jp/~suematsu/... Nothing is known about the builders yet.
