Con la ilegalidad corriendo en sus venas

Debutando en el narcotrfico con latigazos a la oligarqua

En 1969 Pablo haba terminado su bachillerato y posteriormente logr ser admitido como estudiante de Economa en la Universidad Autnoma Latinoamericana de Medelln, dentro de la cual estaban algunos de sus primos Gaviria, como el tal Jos Obdulio. Sin embargo, movido por sus propias tendencias y por la nociva influencia de su primo Gustavo Gaviria, Pablo se dio cuenta de que, en vez de matarse estudiando por ms de tres aos, poda conseguir el mismo xito con la cocana Por eso dej la universidad y se dedic a ser intermediario, realizando viajes hacia Per para comprar la pasta de coca (en base a la cual se elabora la cocana) y posteriormente venderla a traficantes que la llevaban a USA. Sin embargo su visin empresarial, su voluntad emprendedora y su inteligencia, lo convirtieron rpidamente en lder dentro del mbito, de tal modo que en 1971 se vio involucrado en el secuestro y asesinato del industrial Diego Echeverra y del narcotraficante Fabio Restrepo despus, en 1975, as como de los policas Luis Fernando Vasco Urquijo y Jess Hernndez Patio, ambos mandados a matar en 1976 por tratar de extorsionar a Pablo.

Pablo empez su ataque a la oligarqua mandando a incendiar la finca de Fabio Echeverra Correa, hacendado que se opona a sus proyectos. Al da siguiente, mand a quemar El Vagn Pero lo peor estaba por venir, y aquello inici con la campaa de Escobar en contra de los ricos hacendados, quienes se haban constituido en un obstculo para sus negocios. Y es que el lema de Escobar era claro: Plata o plomo; es decir que, o aceptabas sus generosos sobornos, o caas ante las balas de sus sicarios. Claro que los ricos pensaron inicialmente que Pablo no hablaba en serio; pero, tal y como cuenta en el libro Pablo: sangre, traicin

y muerte, texto que citaremos algunas veces a lo largo del artculo el lugarteniente (el jefe de sicarios) de Escobar, John Jairo Velsquez alias Popeye: Ante el discurso del gobierno y la presin de la sociedad antioquea por expropiar los bienes de los narcotraficantes, Pablo Escobar decide atacar personalmente a los ricos de Colombia. Va a la finca de Fabio Echeverra Correa, presidente de una de las empresas ms importantes del pas (). Escobar ordena que rodeemos la casa, con los tres carros, a prudente distancia uno del otro. Pablo se adelanta rumbo a la finca. Entramos a la mansin con nuestras armas. Todos portamos fusiles R-15 y el Patrn su ametralladora MP-5. No hay servicio de vigilancia ni cmaras. Pieza por pieza revisamos hasta el ltimo rincn. Una mujer y dos empleadas de servicio son las nicas en ese momento. Dando una muestra de lo que se le viene al pas, Escobar enciende un fsforo y lo acerca a un camino de gasolina que Paskin ha trado hasta los pies del jefe. El incendio comienza tmidamente. Pablo ordena entonces que vayamos a los vehculos. No habran transcurrido tres minutos cuando omos una pequea explosin () Ya la casa arde con fuerza. Escobar se queda mirando en silencio durante cinco minutos las inmensas llamas. Al da siguiente, encarga a Pinina que organice la quema de El Vagn, un smbolo de la oligarqua antioquea. Se destruyen cuatro fincas ms, de empresarios reconocidos.

El gran benefactor de los pobres

As como se granje el odio de los estamentos sociales privilegiados, Escobar tambin se gan el amor de los pobres. Unos piensan que su filantropa era completamente sincera, otros que estaba motivada por la megalomana, y otros que sta era una astuta forma de dar una imagen positiva para tener mayor margen de hacer el mal sin consecuencias nefastas, cumpliendo as con la frase de La Rochefoucauld, segn la cual muchas veces hacemos el bien slo para poder hacer el mal impunemente.

Desde sus inicios, Pablo (arriba) ayud a los pobres: les hizo casas, les dio empleos, les consigui servicios de agua y electricidad, y hasta canchas de ftbol. Los desfavorecidos siempre lo quisieron. Sea cual fuere el caso, Escobar dio casa, comida y trabajo a los pobres, muchas veces sin conexin alguna con el narcotrfico. Construy hospitales y canchas deportivas; brind servicios de agua y electricidad, cre fuentes de empleo Pero la cima de su filantropa fue el programa Medelln sin Tugurios, en el cual cre un barrio de trescientas casas que regal a los habitantes del basurero y a los pobres que dorman en las calles. Gracias a esta generosidad asombrosa, el pueblo lo protegi de la Justicia, muchos de ellos (de los pobres que ayud) se convirtieron en sicarios suyos, y no pocos fueron sus votos cuando se meti a las elecciones en su etapa de poltico. Las cosas eran claras para cualquiera: al pueblo no le interesaba lo limpio que fuese el dinero con el cual Pablo ayudaba, al pueblo solo le interesaban los hechos, las cosas concretas, los bienes tangibles, porque haba sido vctima de la desigualdad por siglos y lo seguira siendo, de modo que, si ese dinero vena de la droga, los ms perjudicados eran los burgueses y la gente de la alta sociedad, siendo stas las clases que en parte eran culpables de la miseria popular

El Zar de la cocana
Junto con Carlos Lehder, Gonzalo Rodrguez Gacha, Jorge Luis Ochoa y sus hermanos Fabio y Juan David, Pablo Escobar fund, en condicin de lder, el Crtel de Medelln. Ya en los setenta se convirti en un individuo clave en el trfico internacional de cocana, y posteriormente (1989) habra de ser declarado como el sptimo hombre ms rico del mundo por la revista Forbes.

Pablo y su joven (15 aos) esposa Tata, en el da de la boda Durante esa misma dcada, en el ao 1976, Pablo (obviamente en parte por su gran fortuna) consigui conquistar a una bella quinceaera llamada Mara Victoria Henao Vallejos, a la cual llamaba cariosamente Tata. Fue con ella con quien se cas y tuvo a Manuela y a Juan Pablo, hijos a los que siempre am y cuid, al igual que a Tata, mujer a la que jams abandon (incluso le segua mandando flores aos despus de haberse casado) pese a las mltiples amantes que tuvo. Volviendo a los asuntos del narcotrfico, ya desde sus inicios, tan grande fue el imperio de Pablo que Popeye (su jefe de sicarios) cuenta lo siguiente con respecto a la alianza entre su patrn y los revolucionarios sandinistas de Nicaragua: Los sandinistas reciban de Pablo Escobar entre quinientos y mil dlares por cada kilo de cocana, dependiendo del tamao del embarque. Aparte de esto, cobraban doscientos dlares por el almacenamiento y custodia de cada kilo de coca Otro punto decisivo que muestra la importancia de Escobar, es el hecho de que ste creara el primer grupo paramilitar moderno de Colombia en 1981. Se trataba del MAS, cuyas siglas significaban Muerte a Secuestradores. Este grupo naci bsicamente como una respuesta de Escobar a los secuestros y acciones guerrilleras en su contra, como fue el secuestro de su propio padre, al cual Pablo logr rescatar, matando despus, con ayuda de sus hombres, a todos los secuestradores, excepto a uno que escap

Ahora bien, si algo fue decisivo en el ascenso al poder mafioso de Escobar, eso fue la famosa Hacienda Npoles, erigida sobre un terreno de 3000 hectreas, adquirido por Pablo en 1979 al precio de 63 millones de dlares All Pablo construy lujosas mansiones, hizo lagos artificiales, edific canchas de ftbol (en las que practicaron equipos profesionales), cre una plaza de toros, levant laboratorios para procesar coca, construy dinosaurios en tamao natural para que su hijo jugara con ellos, plant miles de rboles, y cre un helipuerto y dos pistas de aterrizaje, llegando a constituirse la Hacienda Npoles, para el ao 1983, en un aeropuerto internacional del mundo narco, donde en promedio se realizaban tres o cuatro vuelos diarios de aviones repletos de cocana Lejos de deleitar solo a Pablo y su gente, la Hacienda Npoles se constituy en un lugar que por cierto tiempo las familias colombianas, pagando una razonable tarifa, podan visitar. De ese modo, detrs de la puerta coronada por la primera avioneta en la que Escobar hizo un vuelo con coca a USA, yaca esperando el fantstico zoolgico de Pablo, donde los habitats naturales de los animales estaban reproducidos, y adems estaba la mayor coleccin de aves en cautiverio de toda Colombia, y un inmenso abanico de especies como: elefantes, canguros, jirafas, cebras, gacelas, bfalos, avestruces, ciervos, tortugas, venados, us, hipoptamos, canguros, leones, tigres y rinocerontes. Era un lugar fantstico, donde se cuenta que un canguro saba jugar ftbol y el mismo Escobar, entusiasmado por lo bien que la gente la pasaba all, se una en ciertas ocasiones a los recorridos de sus visitantes. Pero la Hacienda Npoles tambin tena un lado turbio: all se realizaban ejecuciones, y fiestas donde la cocana se mova como si de ccteles se tratase, en compaa de sensuales y bellas prostitutas que deleitaban a los presentes con shows de orgas lsbicas, encuentros individuales y otras cosas; aunque, adems de stas prostitutas, estaban jovencitas menores de edad (muchas veces vrgenes) que el propio Escobar, con su poderosa fortuna, peda para l como quien pide, sin dificultad alguna, una pizza a domicilio

Volviendo a las actividades criminales de Escobar, el general Hugo Martnez aclara que, lejos de lo que muchos pensaran, la droga no era el nico negocio de Pablo: Los secuestros fueron la base de todos los crmenes de Escobar en Medelln; la droga no fue el negocio ms importante, slo el ms rentable. Pero l secuestraba a gente, le peda dinero y con frecuencia la mataba igualmente

Escobar, un modelo a seguir en el mundo narco

Pablo Escobar logr pasar a la historia como el paradigma del narcotraficante, como el narco que condensa en su persona la esencia de lo que significa ser un narcotraficante. l llev un estilo de vida que muchos narcos intentaron seguir, y cre y emple procedimientos y tcnicas que serviran de modelo a futuras generaciones de narcotraficantes, tanto fuera como dentro de Colombia. Coleccionaba autos lujosos (tena ms de cuarenta autos deportivos en el Edificio Mnaco de Medelln); sus bienes races incluan fincas, centros comerciales, mansiones, casas,

edificios, oficinas, sumando entre todo ello un total de ms de quinientos predios de propiedad suya; tena motocicletas, lanchas, avionetas, helicpteros

Pablo cre la narcocultura. Fue l quien cre el concepto del narco rodeado de mansiones, autos y mujeres, y fue en su persona que comenz a inspirarse el narcoarte, del cual vemos muestras arriba. Fue l quien introdujo el uso del submarino para traficar droga, y quien us, en el narcotrfico, de forma sistemtica tcnicas y procedimientos como: aves mensajeras; libros huecos para llevar armas y droga; ejecuciones (a veces simultneas, en masa) y tortura para narcotraficantes rivales y para traidores; intimidacin mediante envo de cabezas cortadas a las autoridades; empacamiento de cadveres en bolsas plsticas y eliminamiento de los mismos dejndolos por montnes en parajes despoblados y basureros; infiltramiento en diversos mbitos del poder, sobornando o intimidando a funcionarios, autoridades, militares, policas, jueces, abogados y polticos, o bien infiltrando a sus agentes en los diversos estamentos del aparato estatal; equipamiento moderno de su brazo armado (toda organizacin narco tiene una divisin o brazo armado), con fusiles automticos, chalecos, AK-47 y otras metralladoras; y, claro est, conduccin del conflicto al espacio urbano, pues, como dicen, Escobar llev la guerra a las calles De ese modo, por muchos aos Pablo fue el rey, el Zar de la cocana. No sorprende entonces que fuese a raz de su figura que se erigiese la llamada cultura del narco, con sus manifestaciones en la narcotectura (la arquitectura de las mansiones lujosas y vulgares de los narcotraficantes); la literatura del narco (donde los traficantes tienen el protagonismo de las historias); el narcocine (con pelculas de bajo presupuesto, mediocre o mala manufactura y abundantes tiroteos, ejecuciones y dems escenas sangrientas); el narcoarte (con pinturas y esculturas inspiradas en los narcotraficantes y el mundo narco); y la narcomsica (con canciones que hablan de las vidas de los narcos, contndonos sobre sus luchas y amores).

El primer gran revs

Tranquilandia, una de las dos plantas de procesamiento de cocana que la Polica le descubri a Pablo Escobar. Pese a que en 1989 la revista Forbes lo declar el sptimo hombre ms rico del mundo, antes Escobar debi afrontar diversos infortunios, como lo sucedido el 8 de marzo, cuando la Polica Antinarcticos le descubri dos grandes complejos para el procesamiento de cocana: Tranquilandia y Villacoca, en las selvas del Yar, dentro del Departamento de Caquet. Cuenta as Popeye: Las gigantescas instalaciones son la prueba del imperio de la droga en Colombia. Tienen dos pistas para los aviones, todo lo necesario para el movimiento de insumos, mucho personal, pasta de coca en abundancia y finalmente, la cocana lista para el consumo. De all decolaban los aviones de la mafia, con droga, hacia los Estados Unidos. Las autoridades destruyen cuarenta laboratorios ms; detienen a cuarenta y cuatro personas y alrededor de 250 trabajadores huyen, selva adentro, buscando el ro Yar, llevndose consigo cerca de quince toneladas de cocana a cuestas. Decomisan diecisiete toneladas de coca listas para su exportacin. Los campamentos estn dotados de televisores, licuadoras, microondas, aire acondicionado, baos con agua potable, todo alimentado con plantas elctricas a partir de gasolina. Cinco aviones son confiscados. Las imgenes de Tranquilandia y Villacoca le dan la vuelta al mundo. Como se puede pensar de las palabras del lugarteniente de Escobar, exista personal de la Fuerza Area que estaba comprado por El Patrn, y as el Coronel Jaime Ramrez, el capitn Macana y otros oficiales, son expulsados tras el siniestro descubrimiento, en el cual Escobar y Gonzalo Rodrguez Gacha fueron sealados, tras las indagaciones debidas, como los dueos de los laboratorios Sin duda Pablo sinti el golpe en su billetera y en su imagen pblica, pero pronto llegara el gran Miguel, y con l se desatara el fuego de la venganza y el terror

Miguel, el Maestro de las Bombas

Jorge Luis Ochoa, socio de Escobar que le habl de Miguelito, un terrorista de ETA que habra de contribuir con sus destacados conocimientos sobre explosivos Todo cambi cuando El Negro (uno de los principales de Escobar) le cont a Pablo que, mientras estuvo preso en USA, conoci a Miguel, un terrorista de ETA con fama de gran experto en explosivos. Cualquiera simplemente habra odo con inters la historia, pero Escobar saba lo que se poda hacer con todo el dinero que tena; y as, antes de que acabara la conversacin, tuvo la brillante idea de invertir unos cuantos miles para traer a Miguel. Y as fue, en diez das lo ubic, y en quince El Negro lo llev a la mansin de Escobar, en la Hacienda Npoles. Miguel se sienta en el comedor, le traen un refresco, El Negro sube a la habitacin de Escobar y en poco tiempo Escobar baja con El Negro, frotndose las manos como quien ha encontrado por fin lo que tanto buscaba. Miguel, entusiasmado, se levanta y le saluda con naturalidad: Hombre, Pablo, que gusto conocerte!, le dice con acento espaol mientras le estrecha la mano, en un apretn que baara en sangre la historia de Colombia. En poco tiempo Escobar manda a buscar a un hombre inteligente y despierto para que tome un curso con Miguel, y Pinina (quien tambin fue jefe de sicarios; pero, a diferencia de Popeye, muri despus) le sugiere a un familiar suyo que estudiaba Ingeniera Electrnica en la Universidad de Antioquia. Todo habra de salir perfecto: el familiar de Pinina aprendera muy bien las tcnicas de Miguel; y ste, abstenindose de bebidas, drogas y chicas, trabajara como un cientfico-terrorista en la hacienda del Patrn

Plomo para Cano y Bonilla

El periodista Guillermo Cano, dueo y editor del diario El Espectador, abri el debate sobre el origen real de los bienes de Escobar, haciendo que el debate sobre el dinero del narcotrfico llegase al Parlamento. Luego, en agosto de 1983, el Ministro de Justicia, Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, demostr que la fortuna de Escobar no tena orgenes limpios, y el diario El Espectador atiz el fuego publicando una ficha policial de 1976, en la que se mostraba una detencin de Pablo Escobar

Pablo mand a matar a Guillermo Cano (foto) porque ste perjudic su imagen. Por ello la madre de Pablo le dio un buen sermn, y a Pablo, a pesar de sus aos, le afect mucho el asunto, porque siempre tuvo en un pedastal a su madre y a la opinin de sta. Pablo se senta afrentado, y el fuego de su ira creci cuando, por el dao a su imagen, los colegios de pago rechazaban a sus hijos y los clubes de la alta sociedad lo excluan Pero Pablo se veng, mandando a matar a Guillermo Cano y a Lara Bonilla. Sobre el asesinato del segundo, ocurrido el 30 de abril de 1984, Popeye escribe lo siguiente: El Patrn () sentencia: Hay que matar al Ministro. Sabe que puede ser peor el remedio que la enfermedad, pero se la juega toda y va de frente. El comando de Pablo idea varias formas de ejecutar a Lara Bonilla. Una de ellas es dispararle rfagas de fusil, desde una ambulancia. Pinina va a su barrio, Campo Valds, y contrata a Byron Velsquez, apodado Quesito, y a Ivn Dara Guisado. El primero es un hombre diestro en el manejo de motocicletas y el segundo, un consumado asesino. Con una moto Yamaha sin pasado y una ametralladora Atlanta calibre 45, junto con Pinina, viajan a la ciudad de Bogot, Chopo, Oto y la Yuca; optan por ametrallar al Ministro en el desplazamiento desde su casa al Ministerio de Justicia (). El Ministro es celosamente custodiado por el DAS, pero su carro oficial no est blindado; all encuentran su taln de Aquiles ()la historia del pas se rompe en dos: desplazndose en un automvil oficial Mercedes Benz, por la Avenida 127 al norte de Bogot, la mano de Pablo Escobar alcanza al Ministro de Justicia Rodrigo Lara Bonilla. Una rfaga de ametralladora depositada en su humanidad por Ivn Daro, pone fin a la disputa (), pero inicia un gran bao de sangre en el pas. En cuanto a Guillermo Cano, ste fue mandado a matar despus de que denunciara la mano de Escobar en la toma del Palacio de Justicia por parte del M-19, asunto del cual se hablar posteriormente, luego de aclarar el tema de Los Extraditables.

Los Extraditables
A raz del atentado contra Lara Bonilla, se cre el grupo de Los Extraditables, conformado por Pablo y todos los narcos susceptibles de ser entregados a la justicia de Estados Unidos. Preferimos una tumba en Colombia que una celda en los Estados Unidos, tal era el lema de Los Extraditables, constituido en su mayora por miembros del Cartel de Medelln. Consecuentemente, stos habran de luchar hasta las ltimas consecuencias para que no entre en vigencia ningn tratado de extradicin, y lo haran comprando periodistas, publicando anuncios en diarios, y manejando, en la medida de lo posible, los hilos del poder poltico. Paralelamente la guerra habra de recrudecerse, por lo que en 1985 fueron asesinadas 1698 personas, y al ao siguiente 3500. As, Los Extraditables secuestraban a polticos y empresarios ligados a los procesos de extradicin, entre los cuales estuvo el ex presidente

Andrs Pastrana; quien, segn cuenta Popeye, era un nio consentido de la oligarqua que acab por perder la compostura y llorar gritando como beb: Me van a matar, me van a matar!, aunque lo cierto es que nunca lo mataron, sino que se lo llevaron en helicptero a Medelln, mientras ste lloraba y preguntaba por qu lo secuestraban, olvidando que, mientras fungi de presentador del noticiero TV Hoy, arremeti algunas veces contra Escobar y su gente

Documento a nombre de Los Extraditables, grupo de narcos que el Estado deseaba extraditar a USA, y dentro de los cuales estaba Pablo Escobar Gaviria Otro ejemplo de secuestro, esta vez con ejecucin incluida, fue el caso del Procurador Hoyos; quien, a diferencia de Pastrana, mostr valor hasta el ltimo momento, tal y como cuenta Popeye: Procurador, esto es ms complicado de lo que parece. A usted lo ha secuestrado un comando de Los Extraditables y ser ejecutado por el delito de traicin a la patria, le digo mirndolo a los ojos. A quin diablos traicion yo?2, dice el poltico, abandonando sus modales y su compostura. Traiciona sus orgenes, traiciona a su gente, traiciona a su pas y se traiciona usted, al avalar las extradiciones y perseguir jurdicamente a Pablo Escobar Gaviria Bruscamente me interrumpe y me pide a gritos que le llame a Escobar, para hablarle () Nos vamos junto con el Procurador a una caada que hay a diez minutos del escondite. El Procurador, con una actitud digna, permanece en silencio, sin implorar por su vida () (El sicario) dispara una vez sobre la cabeza del Procurador Hoyos; ste cae sin quejarse

Toma del Palacio de Justicia

Ivn Marino Ospina, guerrillero del M-19, haba planificado castigar al presidente por romper el acuerdo de cese al fuego, y la forma en que lo hara sera tomando el Palacio de Justicia y enjuiciando al presidente ante todo el pas. Sin embargo, Ospina era consciente de que Escobar estaba enfrentado al poder judicial, por lo cual poda intentar buscar financiamiento del mismo, ya que a ste le convena por el asunto de Los Extraditables pues, si en el asalto al Palacio de Justicia se quemaban los documentos sobre Los Extraditables, establecer el tratado de extradicin sera formalmente inviable por un vicio en el proceso. Naturalmente Escobar estuvo encantado con la propuesta de Ospina, y les prest a los guerrilleros la pista de la Hacienda Npoles para importar fusiles y explosivos de Nicaragua, junto a lo cual les aport cinco millones de dlares para que todo saliese a la perfeccin, solicitando que, a cambio, simplemente se quemen todos los archivos del Palacio de Justicia concernientes a Los Extraditables, para lo cual inicialmente Escobar pens en mandar hombres de su cartel, pero Ospina se neg y dijo que mejor sus guerrilleros haran aquella tarea, ya que estaban perfectamente entrenados para funcionar en grupo y, si entraban en la operacin los hombres de Escobar, las cosas podran estropearse Por su parte, el DAS averigu los planes guerrilleros y, consecuentemente, la seguridad del Palacio de Justicia se fortaleci significativamente desde el inicio del intervalo de tiempo en el que se pensaba que atacara el M-19 (grupo guerrillero de Ospina). No obstante, a muchos de los jueces les pareci que las medidas eran extremas, que daban una mala imagen y que deban ser retiradas. Grave error, porque ahora los guerrilleros podran entrar con ms facilidad; y lo haran, aunque no en uno de los das previstos por el DAS

Imagen del Ejrcito intentando recuperar el Palacio de Justicia luego de que el grupo guerrillero M-19, financiado por Pablo Escobar, lo tomara a la fuerza un 6 de noviembre de 1985 La cronologa de los hechos fue la siguiente: Mircoles 6 de noviembre de 1985: 11:30 a.m. Dos camiones, repletos de terroristas entrenados en Cuba y Libia, ingresan violentamente por la puerta del stano del Palacio de Justicia. Paralelamente otro grupo de guerrilleros, que haban ingresado vestidos de civil desde muy temprano, se apoder del primer piso y de la puerta principal. 12:00 m. Los terroristas se toman por completo el edificio, tomando como rehenes a los magistrados, los empleados y los visitantes. Entretanto, el Ejrcito y la Polica han cercado el Palacio de Justicia y el presidente Belisario Betancur se ha enterado de lo sucedido. 1:30 p.m. Los primeros vehculos blindados (de las fuerzas del orden) tratan de ingresar por el stano, pero no lo logran. 1:57 p.m. Tanques de guerra, al mando del Teniente Coronel Luis Alfonso Plazas Vega, ingresan por la puerta principal, desbaratan la resistencia de los terroristas y los fuerzan a replegarse en los pisos altos. En la parte posterior del Palacio de Justicia, se desata el primer incendio cuando los terroristas intentan quemar los expedientes correspondientes a Los Extraditables. 4:00 p.m. Los medios de comunicacin ponen al aire la voz del presidente de la Corte Suprema de Justicia, Alfonso Reyes Echanda, quien pide pblicamente la suspensin del operativo militar. Mientras tanto, los guerrilleros y los rehenes estn acorralados en el cuarto piso. 8:00 p.m. El incendio se vuelve incontrolable y el Ejrcito sigue en el tercer piso, sin poder avanzar. Mientras, el Consejo de Ministros contina reunido en la Casa de Nario, donde permanecer el resto de la noche. Jueves 7 de noviembre de 1985: 7:00 a.m. El presidente acepta dialogar con los guerrilleros y encomienda al director del Socorro Nacional, Carlos Martnez Senz, llevar el mensaje a los guerrilleros. Sin embargo, cuando se acercan al Palacio de Justicia, los mensajeros del presidente son recibidos con

balas por parte del M-19. 8:30 a.m. Los guerrilleros liberan al Consejero de Estado, Reynaldo Arciniegas, mandndolo con un mensaje para que el Gobierno haga ingresar a la Cruz Roja y se inicie el dilogo. 12:00 m. El emisario presidencial, Carlos Martnez Senz, permanece en la Casa del Florero (un puesto de mando militar), pues no ha podido ingresar al Palacio de Justicia. 1:50 p.m. El emisario del presidente consigue llegar a la puerta del Palacio de Justicia, pero en ese momento se reinician los disparos. Entretanto, para ese momento el Ejrcito ya ha volado las paredes de acceso al sitio en donde estn los timos secuestradores vivos y sus rehenes. 2:10 p.m. Se escucha una nueva explosin y todo queda en silencio. 2:20 p.m. El ministro de Defensa, Miguel Vega Uribe, recibe el mensaje de que la misin ha sido cumplida puesto que el Palacio de Justicia se ha recuperado. La operacin antes expuesta fue solo parcialmente exitosa; ya que, si bien 215 personas salieron vivas del Palacio de Justicia, los expedientes sobre Los Extraditables se quemaron y 11 de los 24 magistrados perecieron, entre los cuales estaban muchos de los jueces que Escobar deseaba ver muertos La destruccin ocasionada en el Palacio de Justicia aceler el proceso de desinstitucionalizacin en Colombia, y oblig a que se erigiera un nuevo palacio ms fuerte que el anterior, lleno de mrmol italiano y vidrios blindados. Sin embargo Escobar haba ganado, por lo cual escribe de l Popeye: No slo consigue desaparecer los expedientes por la quema, tambin evita el tener que cazar en la calle a los firmantes de las extradiciones, quienes mueren incinerados y con una bala en su cerebro. Por ltimo y como se dijo en un apartado anterior, Don Guillermo Cano, dueo del diario El Espectador, denunci la participacin de Escobar en la toma del Palacio de Justicia, a lo cual se sumaba el que anteriormente haba expuesto la ficha policial de la detencin de Escobar en 1976. Debido a ello, Escobar estaba furioso con Cano, as que lo mand a matar y, poco despus, orden colocar una bomba con 100 kilos de explosivo en la redaccin de El Espectador, reduciendo sta a escombros

Luis Carlos Galn: el inicio del fin

El candidato Luis Carlos Galn, herido de muerte por un sicario de Pablo Escobar. Luis Carlos Galn era candidato a las elecciones presidenciales de 1990. l era el favorito en las encuestas, todos saban que ganara, pero a Escobar no le gustaba la idea porque

Galn ya vena, a travs de sus discursos, anunciando su fuerte voluntad por combatir a los narcos, quiz de forma demasiado desprevenida Pero fue el senador Alberto Santofimio, ttere poltico de Escobar, quien lo convenci de que matar a Galn era buena idea. Mtalo, Pablo!, le pidi Santofimio enfticamente. Y Pablo lo hizo matar, sin saber hasta qu punto eso habra de cambiar la percepcin que la gente tena de los narcos. Fue el principio del fin aquel 18 de agosto de 1989 en que Luis Carlos Galn muri camino al hospital. Sobre aquella nefasta fecha Popeye escribi: A las 20:30 horas, Luis Carlos Galn llega a la plaza. Sus copartidarios gritan vivas; todo es una fiesta, pancartas, pasacalles, banderas; el triunfo es un hecho. Lo llevan a la tarima sus seguidores, acompaados de la numerosa escolta del DAS. Saludando, Galn va con su puo en alto y, apenas subiendo los escalones de la tarima, antes de iniciar su enardecido discurso, la ametralladora escupe su mortal carga. Es una rfaga tabletea y Galn cae mortalmente herido. Las cmaras de los noticieros registran la dramtica escena. Se escuchan tiros a lo lejos, cae herido un escolta () La confusin es total. Galn es sacado de urgencia al hospital ms cercano.

Atentado en un vuelo de Avianca

El 27 de noviembre de 1989, a las 7:16 de la maana y cinco minutos despus del despegue, los pasajeros del vuelo HK 1803 de Avianca escucharon un terrible estruendo. Ese sera el ltimo sonido que muchos de ellos oiran en su vida, seguido del cual vino otra explosin ocasionada por el estallido de uno de los tanques de combustible del avin.

El atentado al vuelo de Avianca en el diario El Espectador Fue una verdadera matanza, ninguno de los 110 pasajeros sobrevivi, y el avin, desintegrado por la explosin, cay hecho pedazos cerca del Municipio de Soacha. Con aquel atentado, Pablo pretenda matar al candidato presidencial Csar Gaviria, quien era el heredero poltico del difunto Carlos Galn. Sin embargo Gaviria, alertado por el DAS, no

vol ese da, de modo que el atentado de Escobar fue una completa masacre de civiles inocentes Pablo lo lamentara, no solo porque cada vez mostraba ms su carcter de amenaza para la sociedad, sino porque Gaviria habra de ser electo presidente en 1990.

El legendario atentado contra el edificio del DAS

ste es el edificio del DAS despus del atentado mentado por Pablo Escobar Hasta ese momento vena siendo claro que el DAS era una verdadera amenaza para Escobar; y ste, consciente de eso, decidi tomar cartas en el asunto con una contundencia que la historia de Colombia jams olvidara. Sucedi as que, el 6 de diciembre de 1989 a las 07:30 de la maana, una brutal explosin se escuch en toda Bogot. Era el edificio del DAS, que acababa de recibir la explosin de un autobs bomba con 8000 kilos de dinamita, suficientes para hacer saltar un castillo pese a haber estallado a 30 metros del edificio, que qued reducido a ruinas tras un atentado que dej un crater de 13 metros de dimetro por 4 de profundidad, 600 heridos y 70 muertos, junto a cabezas y extremidades que, segn cuentan, salpicaron a cientos de metros, en una lluvia de sangre, carne y escombros. Sin embargo el director del DAS, el general Miguel Alfredo Maza, tena una oficina tan blindada que sobrevivi al atentado, lo suficientemente sano para continuar su labor, aunque esta vez con un renovado odio hacia Escobar

Rumbo a una acogedora prisin

Viendo que las cosas iban mal, Escobar se desesper e inici una ola de secuestros Francisco Santos Caldern, jefe de redaccin del peridico El Tiempo; Maruja Pachn de Villamizar, directora de Focine; y Marina Montoya (hermana del ex-secretario de la Presidencia, Germn Montoya Vlez), la cual sera asesinada y sobornos a polticos, consiguiendo que finalmente se reformara la constitucin y se eliminara toda posibilidad de extradicin para l y los dems del grupo de Los Extraditables.

Por ello, el 19 de junio de 1991 y bajo un acuerdo con el gobierno que el mismo Escobar deseaba, ste entreg su pistola Sig Sauer al procurador Carlos Arrieta, diciendo publicamente: Es un smbolo de mi deseo de someterme a la justicia. Entonces, junto a l, once de sus lugartenientes (incluido Popeye) ingresaron a la crcel La Catedral.

Abusando de privilegios

Este lujoso cuarto fue la celda de Escobar. En La Catedral, Pablo tena todas las comodidades que se pudiesen desear: piscina, discoteca, champagne francs, restaurante abierto las veinticuatro horas, muecas inflables y un catlogo de bellas prostitutas All l encargaba comida de su antojo, quinceaeras para desvirgar y rameras para shows lsbicos y orgas para l y los suyos As mismo, all tena un campo de ftbol al que acudan a jugar los tres equipos de Medelln y el famoso Ren Higuita, con quien Pablo jug personalmente. Pero eso no era todo, pues desde la crcel Pablo segua dirigiendo su imperio: ejecutaba a enemigos y traidores, torturaba y coordinaba acciones contra el Cartel de Cal, con el cual haba iniciado una guerra que fue uno de los principales factores de su cada No era de extraar la situacin, ya que la guardia que estaba cerca era de la propia nmina de Escobar y, de entre la guardia militar que estaba a los alrededores, muchos estaban comprados y, para prevenir reacciones, Pablo haca poner msica a todo volumen cuando ordenaba torturas o ejecuciones, dando as a pensar que se trataba de otra de sus fiestas salvajes Lo anterior queda muy bien recogido en el testimonio de Popeye, que estuvo con Pablo all en la crcel La Catedral, la cual en teora era una crcel de mxima seguridad pero, como sealaban las crticas de los medios de comunicacin, en realidad era una crcel de mxima comodidad. Volviendo al tema, Popeye nos da una idea precisa de lo macabras que eran las ejecuciones de Pablo y de cmo, llegado a ese punto de su historia, Pablo era ya un fro e inconmobible desalmado: Llega la noche. La oscuridad cubre las cabaas y la fogata es encendida (). Llega El Patrn con los guardias municipales y les ordena estar atentos a que no suba nadie extrao, como el sargento de la guardia que a veces se mova por el penal. Nos llama Escobar a Oto y a m para ordenarnos que matemos a Fernando y a su acompaante. Mugre coloca el equipo de sonido a todo volumen para ahogar los tiros y el ruido de la motosierra. La fogata ya tiene fuerza, es inmensa; es el smbolo del Mal. Vamos Oto y yo al stano. El Palomo nos abre y revlver en mano entramos al estrecho lugar por las pequeas escaleras; ste nos alumbra el camino con su linterna. Cuando

entramos, Fernando grita: Nos van a matar! Yo quedo frente al contador de Kiko y le disparo un solo tiro en la cabeza; no lo dejo reaccionar. Lo mismo hace Oto con Fernando, tomndolo del cuello. Salgo del lugar y Oto pide la motosierra; El Palomo le pasa la linterna a Icopor e ingresa al stano para ayudar a Oto. Llego donde El Patrn y est sentado en una silla; la fogata arde potentemente. A su lado, (su hermano) Roberto Escobar. Pablo, con la pierna cruzada, mira atento la fogata cautivado por el fuego; un gorro ruso lo hace ver ms temible. No habla con nadie, slo mira; al fondo se ven las luces de la ciudad (). La nota ms macabra la coloca Freddy al llegar a la fogata; no tira el balde con su contenido a la hoguera, sino que saca la cabeza de Fernando Galeano y la lanza al fuego. Por la sangre se le resbala y rueda al pegar con un grueso madero, llegando hasta los pies de Pablo Escobar; ste, sin impresionarse, la mira con frialdad

Prisin La Catedral Hasta aqu podra pensarse que el Gobierno saba de todos esos horrores, pero eso no ocurri hasta que lleg una carta annima; y, sin embargo, el Gobierno no hizo nada No obstante todo cambi cuando la DEA y los estadounidenses se enteraron de que Pablo segua dirigiendo su imperio narco desde la lujosa prisin, pues stos presionaron al presidente Gaviria y ste decidi endurecer el trato y poner a raya a Escobar, pero Escobar era astuto y en julio de 1992, pese a los cuatrocientos policas que vigilaban, escap Ya fugado, Escobar crey que de nuevo podra obtener un trato con el Gobierno, en el cual se le dieran otra vez los privilegios y las comodidades de antao. Aunque esta vez el presidente estaba realmente enojado y la respuesta que dio (segn testigos) fue desconcertante para Pablo: No, no, no. Nada de pactos esta vez. Vamos a matarlo.

El Bloque de Bsqueda y el recrudecimiento de la violencia

Cuando Pablo escap de La Catedral, la guerra con el Estado y el Cartel de Cali se recrudeci, y esta vez el Cartel de Cali atac de dos maneras: la primera, dndoles dinero a Los Pepes (organizacin de criminales perseguidos por Escobar y enemigos acrrimos de ste); la segunda, dando informacin clave sobre Escobar a las agencias del gobierno colombiano, informacin que muchas veces ni siquiera los agentes de Inteligencia Estadounidense conocan

Paralelamente a lo anterior, el presidente Csar Gaviria haba creado, en ese mismo 1992, al temible Bloque de Bsqueda: un cuerpo lite de la Polica, con personal entrenado por fuerzas especiales de USA y seleccionado por ser supuestamente incorruptible. Pero eso no era todo, pues los del Bloque de Bsqueda eran realmente crueles, al punto de que se les conoca como Los Rojos por lo sangrientos que eran pues: juntaban a adolescentes pobres y los fusilaban solo por ser sospechosos de andar en el mundo narco, torturaban terriblemente, taladrando mdulas y rotulas, quitando uas, desollando, o usando la temible corbata colombiana, en la cual se le hace un agujero en la garganta al torturado y, por ese agujero, se le estira la lengua y se la deja colgando As, cuenta Popeye que los del Bloque de Bsqueda hicieron que mucha gente de Escobar regresara horrendamente desfigurada, cuando regresaba Esto fue un tremendo catalizador de la violencia urbana, porque Escobar empez a ofrecer recompensas por cada polica muerto, subiendo la recompensa segn el rango del polica (30.000 por un coronel, por ejemplo). Al respecto, Popeye cuenta lo siguiente: A los agentes que viven en los barrios populares los estn matando. Los Rojos van con todo y continan sus masacres, todos atacan y caen cuatro policas ms. (Un sicario) le madruga al Grupo lite y detona un carro bomba contra un camin del mismo, lo coge de costado y lo lanza al otro lado de la autopista; quince policas mueren en el acto, diez ms quedan gravemente heridos. Las escenas son dantescas, policas corren encendidos como teas humanas, los destrozos en el lugar son brutales, los automviles de civiles son destruidos y mueren seis personas; una veintena queda mutilada. Los lites ya han encontrado la respuesta que buscan. Pablo Escobar Gaviria les ha salido al paso, ah lo tienen: la dinamita es su tarjeta de presentacin. La ciudad bajo ros de sangre acompaada por los sonidos de las bombas () Muchos policas asesinan a sus compaeros para cobrar las recompensas. La locura se ha apoderado de todos Con todas esas fuerzas unidas contra l, Pablo termin cayendo cuando, cierto da desde un apartamento de Medelln en el que estaba escondido, hablaba con su hijo sin saber que la lnea estaba siendo interferida

El fin de Escobar
Es un 2 de diciembre de 1993, son las 14:56 y Pablo Escobar llama a su hijo desde un apartamento de dos pisos en un barrio de clase media de Medelln. Todo parece normal, hasta que de pronto Pablo nota ruidos extraos en el entorno y, antes de colgar, le dice a su hijo: Te dejo porque aqu est pasando algo raro. Y efectivamente algo no anda bien: son los del Bloque de Bsqueda y han venido por l, tras localizar su escondite en la calle Carrera 79-A, interfiriendo la llamada

Pablo, que est solo con un guardaespaldas en el segundo piso, ve que lo tienen rodeado dos policas del Bloque de Bsqueda estn en la parte delantera; otros dos, se han metido por un solar en la parte trasera e intenta escaparse por el patio trasero, saliendo por la ventana e intentando descender por el tejado, pero encontrndose con una lluvia de balas, de las cuales una le da en la pierna, otra le atraviesa el hombro y, la tercera y definitiva, le entra y sale por la cabeza, destrozndole al paso el cerebro y la vida Al instante Pablo Escobar cae muerto sobre el tejado, con su cuerpo pesado y el rostro cubierto por una barba que antes no se haba dejado crecer y ahora, como un smbolo de su decadencia, adorna su rostro apagado por la muerte Poco despus cae su guardaespaldas, y la operacin concluye en apenas unos quince minutos

Un mafioso inolvidable

Sobre Pablo se han hecho libros (arriba, un ejemplo), pinturas, canciones, pelculas. La historia nunca podr olvidarlo, y Colombia peor, porque en parte es lo que es (para mal sobre todo) por Pablo Escobar Sorprendentemente, al funeral de Escobar acudieron miles de personas, casi todas provenientes de los desfavorecidos estratos sociales a los que tanto ayud Pablo en vida. En cuanto a su hacienda, sta fue ocupada y entr en decadencia como consecuencia de todos los busca tesoros que fueron a saquear cuanto pudieron; aunque, actualmente, ha sido restaurada junto al zoolgico, y es un sitio de atraccin turstica, no solo por los animales sino porque todo visitante sabe que ese fue el lugar en que por aos resplandeci la infame grandeza de Pablo Escobar. Por su parte, la fortuna de Escobar fue casi por completo tomada por el Estado, por lo cual el hijo de Escobar, Juan Pablo Escobar (conocido como Sebastan Marroqun), dijo en una entrevista lo siguiente: Cuando salimos del pas despus de la muerte de l, el Gobierno se qued con todo. Todo est en manos de las autoridades y no de las vctimas, como debera ser. Por ltimo, la fama de Escobar vivir por siempre: sobre l se han hecho documentales, se han escrito libros, se han realizado entrevistas, se han pintado cuadros (Botero pint su muerte, por ejemplo); e, incluso ahora, se est haciendo una nueva (antes ya se haban hecho otras) pelcula sobre l, en la cual Guillermo del Toro lo interpretar. Y es que y ya para cerrar, a Escobar debe recordrselo sin reduccionismos; pues, si bien fue un asesino despiadado y un megalmano, tena un lado muy humano que mostraba en el amor a su familia y en una generosidad hacia los pobres que, si bien tena algo de egocentrismo y medida calculada, tambin tena algo de genuino. Por eso Juan Pablo Escobar, hijo del Zar de la Cocana, expres lo siguiente sobre su padre: Decan que mi padre era el hombre ms rico. Tambin hay que decir que era el ms generoso y su mayor placer estaba en ayudar a la gente. Senta una enorme satisfaccin de poder contribuir a las familias necesitadas. Mi padre termin asumiendo un rol que se supona que asumiera el Estado. Pero, por otro lado, hay que decirlo tambin, no extraamos la violencia y esa zozobra en la que vivamos permanentemente.
