Work for Month & Year: September 2013 Accomplishments: 1) Monthly Statistics: Small Room: 22 with 46 attending Teen Room: 21 with 60 attending Large Room: 15 with 92 attending Adult Programs: 5 with 109 attending ICNs: 1 with 0 attending Childrens Programs: 4 with 32 attending Monthly Computer Use: 319 2) Programming Snapshot: a) Youth Programs Wee Reads began on September 13th and will continue through December on Friday mornings at 10:00 a.m. An average of 4 children have attended each week. The first Family Storyteller program began on September 24th at 6:00 p.m. This program is being held at the Sac City Library in partnership with ISU Extension. Families are provided dinner and learn about techniques for family story times and early literacy. An average of 20 children and adults are attending this program which runs through the end of October. b) Adult Programs The online book club met on September 6th with 4 participants reviewing the book Mrs. Queen Takes the Train by William Kuhn. The county-wide Janet Dailey author event was a huge success with 90+ attendees at the Early Methodist Church on September 7th. Crafternoon was held on September 16th with 4 attendees making Mason jar crafts and fabric coasters. The Brown Bag Book Club was held on September 18th with 11 attending for book talks and desserts provided by assistant librarian, Joyce OTool. Movie Monday on September 23rd showing Amour had 0 attend. 3) Projects/Grants: a) Science Explorers After-School ProgramThere are 10 children registered for the after school program as of this week. The program begins Thursday, October 3rd from 3:30 to 5:00 every Thursday through the end of November. The first session will feature simple machines and the kids will be building them from different material including Popsicle sticks and Legos. b) Affordable Care Act (ACA) Staff created a display in the library to prepare for the open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act beginning October 1st. The rest of the PAC machines were updated with www.healthcare.gov links on the desktops. 4) Advocacy: a) Library Card Sign-up Month September is library card sign-up month and library staff promoted this special advocacy effort by using the American Library Associations marketing material to run newspaper ads, Facebook ads, and ads on the library website to encourage people to get a library card. Statistics will be available on new library card sign-ups in the next few weeks when the annual survey is completed. b) Banned Books Week Staff created displays and a bulletin board to showcase Banned Books Week from September 22nd through 28th to raise public awareness of

the book challenges across the country every year and to promote the right to read without censorship. 5) Training a) Sac County Roundtable The fall meeting of the Sac County roundtable met on September 3rd in Auburn and discussed last minute plans for the Janet Dailey book talk. County libraries are jointly applying for grants to fund summer reading programs in the fall and also for the State Library one-time technology grant due November 1st for new computers. b) Iowa Library Services Town Meetings Brandie attended the State Librarys Town Meeting in Storm Lake on September 5th to get updates about state funded library services. c) ARSL Conference Brandie attended the Association of Rural and Small Libraries Conference held in Omaha, NE from September 24th through 28th. The Friends of the Library graciously funded 2/3 of the conference fees to help defray costs.
