important dates:

The main purpose in Unit 4 is to develop division concepts. The unit will review basic division facts and algorithms. In the American Tour lessons students will learn about using map scales. The main areas of focus are: To review multiplication and division facts and to apply basic facts to division with 1-digit divisors To review and practice the partial-quotients algorithms To practice solving division number stories and interpreting the remainder.

Math: Unit 4-Division

Math Unit 4: decimal point, dividend, divisor, magnitude estimate, map legend or map scale, multiples, partial quotients, quotient, remainder, variable Spelling: (vowel sounds with r) snore, tornado, spare, appear, career, square, report, prepare, pioneer, chair, beware, smear, repair, sword, ignore, order, engineer, resort, volunteer, declare.

This weeks reading skill is compare and contrast and the reading strategy is story structure. We will be reading the story The Chi-lin Purse. The grammar skill of the week is main and helping verbs. Students will be working through centers to get extra practice on the weekly skills and strategy.

Language arts:

Students have from October 10-15 to take the online reading street test for Unit 2 Week 3.

On Tuesday we will have a Mystery Skype of the year. Our class will receive a call from another class somewhere in the world. Both classes will ask questions and will have to use their inferring skills to figure out where the other class is located. Students gain practice on 21st century skills throughout the call by working in groups and using their problem solving skills. Students will also read a weekly reader that is connected to social studies that will also give students more practice on the reading skill and strategy.

This week is spirit week for the 5th graders. Monday-Wild and Crazy Hair -The crazier the better! Tuesday-Fashion Disaster -Wear mismatched clothes Wednesday-Giants Spirit-Wear green, yellow, or white Thursday-Pajama Day I will be absent this Wednesday until the following Wednesday for my sisters wedding. Mrs. Andrea will be subbing for me and will do a great job. Please dont forget parent conferences for 5A will be after I return! They will not be on Friday, the 11th like the rest of EAC. !
