Council
discusses
property
rezoning
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
Township council discussed
the potential rezoning of the
Sharp Road property, currently
owned by the township.
The parcel of land is 29 acres,
with 20 acres available for devel-
opment. The remaining nine
acres are wetlands and cannot be
built on, according to township
manager Bill Cromie.
The sale of the land will help
the future and the 2014 budget,
Cromie said.
According to Cromie, the coun-
cil suggested solicitor John Gille-
spie draft a request for qualifica-
tion to see if there was any inter-
est from developers.
Those RFQs will tell us the in-
terest the developers might have,
Cromie said.
According to Councilman Bob
DiEnna, the sale of the property
would be one-time revenue, but it
would continuously generate rev-
enue through taxes.

police report
The following are on file with
the Evesham Police Department:
Evesham Police are investigat-
ing a possible luring attempt.
On Sept. 29 at 11:39 a.m., the
Evesham Police Department re-
sponded to the 600 block of West-
erly Drive for a reported luring at-
tempt of a 7-year-old boy. This
neighborhood is in the far north-
west section of the township, bor-
dering Mt. Laurel.
The investigation determined
that a 7-year-old boy was walking
alone on the sidewalk in the 600
block of Westerly Drive, when he
was approached by a male driv-
ing a grey sport utility vehicle.
The man allegedly said to the boy,
I have your birthday gift, get in
the truck. The boy immediately
ran home and told his mother,
who then called the police.
The man is described as being
a male, mid to late 20s, blonde
short hair and no facial hair. The
victim also observed a young
child secured in a baby seat in-
side the vehicle.
Evesham Police searched and
canvassed the entire neighbor-
hood, but the suspects vehicle
was not located nor were any wit-
nesses to the event.
Evesham Police are asking
anyone who may have informa-
tion to contact the Evesham Po-
lice Department at (856) 983-1116,
the Confidential Tip Line at (856)
983-4699 or email at

On Sept. 30 at 7:38 p.m., the Eve-
sham Police Department execut-
ed a search warrant in the unit
block of Dorset Drive. The search
warrant was a result of a three-
month investigation into the
stalking of an Evesham resident.
During the execution of the
search warrant, the accused was
arrested on a warrant for stalking
and was found to be driving while
intoxicated.
A search of the residence re-
vealed evidence connecting him
to prior acts of criminal mischief
and supporting stalking charge.
The accused is being charged
with various acts of criminal
mischief, including slashing the
victims car tires, pouring a paint-
thinner type liquid on her car,
dousing the victims car with
pink paint, and mailing the vic-
tim a threatening letter advising
her that the stalking will never
stop.
The accused, age 42, of Marl-
ton, was charged with two counts
of third-degree criminal mis-
chief, two counts of fourth-degree
criminal mischief, third-degree
stalking and driving under the in-
fluence of alcohol.
He was lodged in the Burling-

Additionally, if the area were
to be developed, ratables would
improve, according to DiEnna.
We think there are parties in-
terested in that piece of ground,
DiEnna said. Weve taken our
time with that part of town; were
being very careful with how
thats developed.
Council discussed rezoning for
residential, according Cromie.
The council sent it to the plan-
ning board for the entire Sharp
Road area, Cromie said.
According to Cromie, there are
numerous residential areas along
Sharp Road, including low-to-
medium income housing, town-
houses and the senior develop-
ment Sharps Run.
The area would be best used
as residential, Cromie said.
There has been some interest
from developers for the area.
Cromie did not disclose which
developers had interest.
It is felt that with the economy
improving and the fact that we
have such little buildable ground
left, it may be attractive for single-
family homes or townhouses, Di-
Enna said.
According to Cromie, the value
of the property has not been de-
termined. Once council establish-
es the value, it will set a mini-
mum bid for auction.
The council has considered the
increase in population with the
possible new residential area, ac-
cording to DiEnna.
The township will not need
another school because enroll-
ment is down and police and fire
are good, DiEnna said.
Despite the townships interest
in residential development, it
may not entirely be the case, de-
pending on the RFQs for some
other use, Cromie said.
The sale of the land can be tied
to the township raising taxes, Di-
Enna said. The council is inter-
ested in making money back due
to funds lost in tax appeals.
We continue to look toward
Trenton to pass some legislation
to enable us to recoup our loss
from the tax appeals. The county
gives us a credit but not until the
next year, DiEnna said.
The council is also in the

process of redeveloping sections of the
township, as well.
Were doing our due diligence and
working hard to develop the town in a fis-
cally responsible manner, DiEnna said.
In other news:
Engineer Tim Staszewski created a few
schematics for the 9/11 memorial slated for
construction at the Main Street Firehouse,
according to deputy manager Monica Van-
denberg.
The piece of steel will be placed on a me-
morial to the left on a patch of lawn, ac-
cording to DiEnna.
We are hoping for the spring to begin
construction, because by the time the pa-
perwork is put together, it would be in the
heavy months in winter, Vandenberg
said. Hopefully, it will be done by June or
July.
The project is preliminary. According to
Vandenberg, there is consideration asking
people who want to donate material/labor,
though the decision is not definitive.
We are seeking ways to have the resi-
dents, businesses and organizations partic-
ipate and make a contribution. Were look-
ing to involve the community, DiEnna
said.
Evesham Township officials acquired
the 1,700-pound piece of steel last October.
The steel has been housed in the munici-
pal building by the courtroom.
The piece of World Trade Center steel
was a great acquisition from our mayor,
Randy Brown, because its a big piece of
steel. It will be in a prominent place in
town forever, DiEnna said.
The design has not been chosen for the
memorial, but DiEnna said he would favor
a design where the steel is standing
erect.
I want to remember the World Trade
Center buildings standing tall, DiEnna
said. It was prominent on the landscape in
New York [City] and it will be prominent in
Marlton.
The next meeting is scheduled for Oct.
15 at 6:30 p.m. at the municipal building.

V
ote them out office all of
them. That seems like an ap-
propriate response to the fed-
eral government shutdown that began
the first day of October and, as of this
writing, was still in effect.
Its pathetic. It truly is. We the peo-
ple of the United States of America
voted these people into Congress to
represent our best interests. But in the
name of their political party, and not
in the name of those who they repre-
sent, they have failed to reach agree-
ments to balance the nations budget
and decided to shut down.
As a result, more than 2 million fed-
eral workers will see their paychecks
delayed, and its possible that 800,000 of
those people might never get repaid.
That is because, of course, as is typical
with our government, the politicians
arent affected by their own decisions,
while those who they represent must
bear the brunt of it all.
A government shut down in reali-
ty isnt a complete closing of doors. By
law, certain agencies must operate
with unsalaried employees. That in-
cludes agencies that deal with nation-
al security and also those that manage
benefits such as Social Security pay-
ments. So, in effect, these people are
forced to work, with no pay, just be-
cause the politicians who they chose
to represent them are deciding to play
party politics instead of coming to an
agreement for the good of the people.
This is just one example of how the
shutdown affects these politicians
constituents. The longer it drags on,
the worse it will get. Veterans may not
receive benefits. The Centers for Dis-
ease Control and Prevention will halt
its flu program, right as flu season be-
gins. Small business financing could
be seriously damaged. And the list
goes on.
Politicians nowadays dont seem to
care about whats good for the people.
They only care about their own party
line whether it be Republican, Demo-
crat, Tea Party or otherwise. Thats
sad, and it negatively affects all of us.
So the only response we, as citizens,
can make is to vote them out of office.
Bring in new people who care about
the people they represent and not the
party to which they belong. Bring in
new people with new ideas who want
change and welcome compromise.
This partisan political culture we
live in needs to stop.
Partisan politics at its worst
The government shutdown is a disgrace

ton County Jail in default of
$17,250 cash bail.
On Sept. 30 at 11:01 p.m., an
Evesham police officer patrolling
inside the Data Driven Approach
to Crime and Traffic Safety Zone
conducted a motor vehicle stop on
Route 70 after observing the vehi-
cle being operated in a reckless
manner.
During the investigation, Eve-
sham Police K-9 Ciko was called
upon to assist officers with the de-
tection of narcotics.
Ciko was walked around the
exterior of the suspects vehicle,
at which time he alerted officers
to the presence of narcotics in-
side the car.
A subsequent search of the ve-
hicle by officers resulted in the
discovery of cocaine, crack, hero-
in and drug paraphernalia.
The accused, age 19 of Taber-
nacle, was charged with third-de-
gree possession of cocaine, third-
degree possession of crack, third-
degree possession of heroin and a
disorderly persons offense for
possession of drug parapherna-
lia.
He was released on his own re-
cognizance.
On Oct. 3 at 3:39 p.m., the Eve-
sham Police Department respond-
ed to the unit block of Endsleigh
Place to investigate solicitors
knocking door to door.
Officers located a male actively
soliciting in the area, and when
asked for proper identification
and soliciting permit, the male
provided officers with a fictitious
name. Officers located the males

ing the computer terminal inside
their patrol vehicle.
The male was wanted by the
Cumberland County Sheriff s De-
partment for failure to pay child

On Wednesday, Oct. 23, Friends
of the Black Run Preserve will
conduct a visioning event from 7-
9 p.m. at the Evans Elementary
School on Route 73 in Marlton.
The purpose will be to develop
a long-range master plan and con-
cept map for the Black Run Pre-
serve, which is a 1,000-acres of
open space.
Friends of the Black Run Pre-
serve have hired two professional
trail mapping, design and con-
struction consultation companies
to help us.
Currently, there are eight
marked trails extending over six-
miles, mostly around old cranber-
ry bogs.
There are upland opportuni-
ties to design and construct sus-
tainable multi-use trails for hik-
ers, birders, photographers, geo-
cachers, trail runners and moun-
tain bikers. Educational opportu-
nities and community service
project possibilities within the
Black Run Preserve are limitless.
Cherokee High School and Eve-
sham Township Schools have a
number of teachers and students
who have participated in a myri-
ad of educational activities and
service learning projects since
2009.
On Oct. 23, the Friends of the
Black Run Preserve are looking
to the general public to provide
their ideas and suggestions, then
follow-up with us as the master
plan is finalized by early spring
and new trail construction will
occur over a two-day period in
March.
The FBRP has recently formed
a Trails Committee and is wel-
coming volunteers.
The Black Run watershed (part
of the Rancocas Creek water-
shed) still has pristine ecological
conditions by Pine Barrens stan-
dards.
Therefore, FBRP were included
in a recent William Penn Founda-
tion grant proposal by a consor-
tium of local nonprofit organiza-
tions, including Pinelands Preser-
vation Alliance and Rancocas
Conservancy.
The high ecological value of
the Black Run watershed and its
impact upon the Kirkwood-Co-
hansey Aquifer is highlighted
within the grant proposal.
PPA and RC have been long-
time partners in regard to the
Black Run Preserve. Over the
past nine years, PPA and the EC
helped bring the FBRP into exis-
tence.
Black Run Preserve event is Oct. 23

ions toward the police depart-
ment.
The survey is designed to
measure the publics opinion on
the agencys overall performance,
competency of the agency em-
ployees, perceptions of the offi-
cers attitudes and behavior, con-
cerns over safety and security
within the township and recom-
mendations and suggestions for

Kick off Halloween season
with South Jersey Pops
Get a jump on Halloween chills
on Oct. 27 at South Jersey Pops
season-opening concert.
When the South Jersey Pops
opens its 44th season on Sunday,
Oct. 27, the chill will be in the au-
tumn air outside and the chills
will be inside the Lenape Regional
District Performing Arts Center
at Cherokee High School in Marl-
ton.
The Pops audience will be
prepped for Halloween with spine-
tingling music that evokes witch-
es, ghosts, a phantom and a brood-
ing knight whos suitably cos-
tumed for the season. Members of
the audience are invited to get
into the Halloween spirit and
come suitably costumed as well.
At intermission, a childrens Hal-
loween parade will wend its way
through the house. Superheroes,
princesses, goblins, ghosts and
zombies are welcome.
The concert, the first in the
pops three-concert 2013-14 season,
is the orchestras first at the Per-
forming Arts Center at 130 Tom-
linson Mill Road.
Doors open at 2:30 p.m. Tickets,
available at the door or online at
www.southjerseypops.org, are $7
for adults. Children in grades
kindergarten through eighth are
admitted free.
Conductor and Music Director
Robert Schiavinato will lead the
orchestra in a performance of
Mussorgskys haunting Night on
Bald Mountain, a work that has
become a Halloween tradition.
Ukrainian writer Nikolai
Gogols tale of witches and other
dark spirits gathering on a barren
mountaintop to conduct their un-
holy rites inspired Mussorgskys
music, best know today through
its association with the Disney an-
imated classic Fantasia.
Michael Storys The Pit and the
Pendulum, inspired by Edgar
Allan Poes tale of an Inquisition
torture chamber, adds its own
chilling intensity to the program.
Schiavinato has also pro-
grammed music from Phantom
of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd
Webbers Tony-award winning
musical. The phantom has ap-
peared in many forms since his
story was first related early in the
last century, but Lloyd Webbers
music has become the most pow-
erful evocation of the phantoms
tragic tale. But is it a tale? Or did a
horrible specter actually lurk in
that French opera house? Does it
lurk still in a concert hall near
you? If it does, fear not. Batman
will save the day in the form of
Hans Zimmers innovative and
eerie music from The Dark
Knight Rises, the final film in the
Batman trilogy.
To show Halloweens lighter
side, the orchestra will play
themes from the film Ghost-
busters, the animated TV series
Scooby Doo and the early 60s
novelty tune The Monster
Mash.
