Texas Instruments (Philippines) Inc.

INtroduction: Texas Instruments Philippines or simply TI Philippines, a subsidiary of Texas In struments, is the leading producer of semiconductors and the biggest maker of ch ips for consumer electronics in the world. The TI Philippines' assembly and test site in Baguio is one of the company's mos t sophisticated assembly facilities to date. The TI Baguio site conducts final assembly and testing of consumer electronics b ound to the United States, Europe, and other parts of Asia. Since taking the decision to set up in the Philippines 21 years ago, Texas Instr uments Philippines has grown tremendously to become the country s top exporter, wi th a cumulative value of some $11.2 billion since 1980. Its export revenue in 2000 was valued at $2.1 billion. In May of 2003, Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo announced one of the biggest singl e investments in the Philippines' economic history - the expansion of Texas Inst ruments in the Clark Freeport Zone in the amount of 1 billion U.S. dollars. The Clark assembly will cover eight hectares and will employ more than 3,000 wor kers. This will double the capacity of Texas Instruments in the Philippines. The new s ite in Clark will incorporate many of the environmental design features that wer e first used by Texas Instruments in the United States at its newest semiconduct or facility. The Clark site is set to produce new and more sophisticated products for consume rs. http://en.wikipilipinas.org/index.php?title=Texas_Instruments_(Philippines)_Inc. This study is conducted for evaluating the Texas Instruments as one of the world leader in producing semiconductor chips. However the author forsee some roooms of improvement that can add a little for the betterment of the company. Methodology The procedure of this study is to evaluate TI's success over the past years. Thi s will include ETHICS, ENVIRONMENT and ENERGY. Texas Instruments has their own code of ethics and it is divided by the followin g: Employees at TI, which they call themselves TI'ers simply say that they have the best ethics in the industry. Some of this discipline are presented and trained for the employees knowledge of what a TI'er must posses. However this kind of ETHICS must be sustain, there are issues in which the compa ny is at risk by ignoring the ethics. As a company some valuable secret are kept thus every employee must be loyal and professional. Being Eco-friendly shows a level of high etiquette. Environment is very importan t in a semiconductor company, for this company has chemicals that may affect the ir products and as we know their products are everywhere. Chips are used in any kind of gadgets, device or automotive, sometimes they are even called the core of the product in this case, the company should provide a c lean and green environment.

TI's Philippines facility awarded LEED Gold certification (06/10) The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded TI's new assembly/test facili ty in the Clark Zone, Philippines a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Desig n (LEED) Gold certification, distinguishing the site as the first of its kind in

the Philippines. "The LEED Gold certification is a validation of TI's commitment to environmental stewardship and to the health of the communities where it operates," said Bing Viera, managing director of TI's operations in the Philippines. "The Clark facil ity was designed from the ground up to maximize manufacturing capabilities and m inimize environmental impact." The newly constructed 780,000 square foot facility is located on the former USA Clark airbase in the Pampanga province of the Philippines on the northern island of Luzon. TI has had a manufacturing presence in the Philippines for more than 30 years and earned a LEED-NC Silver certification on its Phase V expansion proj ect in Baguio City last year. The Phase V project was the Philippine's first LEE D certified building. TI began using USGBC LEED rating systems to guide continuing improvements for co nstruction and sustainability in the early 2000s when the company constructed th e world's first LEED Gold certified semiconductor manufacturing facility, RFAB, in Richardson, Texas. TI Clark site's sustainable design and construction features include: TI's new assembly/test facility in the Clark Zone, Philippines earned LEED Gold c ertification as a "green building". Reducing energy use The site uses a highly reflective roof to reduce heat gain and is the first TI s ite to install a section of vegetative roofing. The 11,000 square foot roof area is covered with living plants to help reduce heat gain and slow water runoff. Natural day lighting is used where possible, and efficient lights with sensors a nd controls take care of the balance of the lighting needs. To make the cooling more efficient, TI utilizes a desiccant wheel air handling u nit to provide dehumidified fresh air. Traditional chilled water cooling removes some moisture and cools the air while the desiccant wheel absorbs the remaining moisture. The desiccant wheel is dried and regenerated using waste heat. Environmentally responsible building materials More than 20 percent of the materials in the building were made from recycled co ntent, and 40 percent of all construction materials were locally produced. Low-emitting materials such as paints, adhesives, sealants and carpeting were us ed to minimize off-gassing and provide for better indoor air quality. More than 96 percent of the construction waste was diverted from the landfill th rough reuse or recycling. This includes a truck load of waste crating material t hat was donated to the Philippines National Apiary Project, which turned the woo d into working beehives for honey production. Construction waste was also donate d to neighboring organizations, including a school, church and local indigenous community group. Efficient commuting The site is served by two different bus lines. This, combined with use of local Jeepneys (multi-passenger vehicles), allows most employees to utilize mass trans it to travel to/from work. Preferred parking is available for low emission vehicles. Bicycle parking, showers, and lockers are provided for bicyclists. Developed by USGBC, LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framewo rk for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building desi gn, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. The TI Clark site was ce rtified under LEED for New Construction (LEED-NC) version 2.2.

TI now operates over 2 million square feet of LEED certified manufacturing space around the world. TI a higly automated factory as it consumes alot of energy
