MP facing seven years in jail after he admits fiddling 30k in expenses

The one-time minister admitted fiddling 30,428 in Parliamentary expenses. Morley, an MP in Scunthorpe from 1987 to 2010, could now become the fourth Parliamentarian to be jailed since the expenses scandal broke. When revelations about Morleys expenses were first revealed in 2009, he vowed that he would fight to clear his name. But he used his first appearance at Southwark Crown Court in south London to admit two charges of false accounting, thereby dishonestly claiming 30,428 more than he was entitled to on a mortgage against his Winterton home. The charges against the MP carry a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. A grim-faced Morley said nothing after the hearing as he made his way past a media scrum. But his political career is now in tatters. Before the hearing, onlookers had watched in hushed silence as a serious-looking Morley took his seat.
