Mission Motorsport Exchange program comes to North Carolina US & UK wounded service members experience NC racing industry

WHAT: On October 9, eight wounded service members from the United States and United Kingdom will experience a once in a lifetime opportunity to be exposed to, participate and learn the racing industry. Through the cooperation of the North Carolina Military-Motorsports Consortium, Mission Motorsport and the USO of North Carolina, the Mission Motorsport Exchange program is a new initiative developed to enhance the resiliency and transition of injured service members by exposing them to the exciting world of racing. The UK served as the first host which took place July 5 through July 14. During the trip, participants had the opportunity to work alongside Mission Motorsports race engineers, tour the Brooklands Museum and Bentley Motors, visit the Caterham F1 factory, visit the Tedworth House Recovery Centre, view the Silverstone GT Academy and attend the historic Goodwood Festival. The intent is to encourage visibility of the program in order to gain funding for a sustained endeavor in North Carolina. About the North Carolina Military-Motorsports Consortium The North Carolina Military-Motorsports Consortium is comprised of legislators, local elected officials, UNC and NC community college leaders, and NC Motorsports representatives in order to launch the Recovery Motorsport Exchange Program that has sent four active-duty U.S.wounded service members to the U.K. to participate in motorsports activities and will host four U.K. active duty wounded service members in North Carolina. The North Carolina Military-Motorsports Consortium has worked in conjunction with the offices of Gov. Pat McCrory and House Speaker Thom Tillis. The following individuals have been instrumental to the success of this initiative: Maj. James Cameron, Founder and Director of Mission Motorsport; Rich Bernard, Co-Founder of Mission Motorsport; John Falkenbury, President of USO of NC; and Rep. Grier Martin (D-Wake). About Mission Motorsport Officially launched in the UK in March 2012, Mission Motorsport provides respite, rehabilitation, vocational support and training to service men and women affected by military operations. The intention of this worthwhile charity is to be a catalyst in the recovery and rehabilitation of those affected by military operations by providing unique opportunities through the racing industry. A parallel U.S. based organization has been formed to help facilitate a bilateral exchange for four to five servicemen of each nation in 2013, culminating with the running of the Rolex 24 hours in January 2014.
