President’s Message___________________________________________
Aloha!

We can finally sit down for a minute. After almost 2 months we’ve made it
through ‘The Gauntlet’. What is ‘’The Gauntlet’? My friends that is the 6 weeks of
Food Booth (1 week of set-up + 5 weeks of Fair) followed immediately by Dragon
Boat for all 3 days of a weekend.

It was a lot of work and a lot of sweat was produced during that time. I get tired
just thinking about it.

So a big Mahalo to all who came out to:

• Work in the Booth
• Prep Nights
• Break down the Booth
• Run the Dragon Boat Races
• Work the Shave Ice Booth @ the Dragon Boat Festival

It’s The Fair Food Booth Thank You Party!

We’re supplying some food as you join us for 2 Events/1 Night – First, we’re getting a lesson in ‘The Electric
Slide’ by Ms. Leeza Agpaoa. She’s gonna show us how to work the floor together. Get in step and in the groove.

Then we’re going to watch a movie, which we’ll vote on. It’ll be your selection from films in the HK Action
genre. Plus we’ll be grilling so bring some grindz! Don’t miss the special evening @ the Ala Wai Plaza Rec Room
(home of Ryan & Ramy).

You Say It’s Your Birthday?

Yes, it’s time again for a Farrell’s Birthday Bash. This time we’re celebrating all HCJ Members who were born
in the months of May, June, July & August. If that’s you, come on out – you’ve got some ice cream coming! That
takes place on Thursday. August 13th @ 6:30PM.

Lastly, I want to say thanks again to Jessie Hosaka for his work on the HCJ website.

Your Friend,
Jonathan Cook

______________________________________ Public Speaking Training
Public speaking is one of the essential skills for
success. Not only in your career but also in almost every
aspect of life, from communicating at home to persuading
others to help you in a cause you believe in. So, , we got a
man who knows how to deliver a message – Mr. John
Cummings.

Many know John for his tireless support of the chapter,

but many don’t realize he is the Public Spokesman for
Oahu Civil Defense. He’s entrusted with telling the public
what’s happening in times of great stress. John developed
his ability to deliver the news, not only on the job but also through his own efforts to constantly improve.

A full room came to get the benefit of his training and they weren’t disappointed. The most telling
moment came when John’s PowerPoint presentation died in the middle of his talk. Not only did he keep
going, he did it smoothly and without hesitation. It was the best possible lesson in public speaking.

Reading this you might be hoping for some of the tips and techniques we learned that night. Lucky for
you, we’ve got some:

• DON’T apologize for being nervous. No one will know you are unless you call attention to it.
• KNOW your material. The better you know it, the less anxious you’ll be about presenting it.
• PRACTICE your speech, your gestures, eye contact & volume. It will pay off at speech time.
• VISUALIZE your speaking success. Create expectation in yourself that you’ll do well.
• PAUSE for effect occasionally, especially when you make important points that you want remembered.
There was more gold given to us that night, but we can’t fit it all in here. Suffice it to say that you missed
a great evening. Who knows – maybe we’ll do follow up with deeper Public Speaking techniques. What do
you think, John?

The brand new HCJ T-Shirts have arrived! And

they come in Gray or White. You can earn one by
working on a project or displaying that legendary
HCJ initiative. Congratulations & Mahalo to those
who’ve gotten one or will be getting one! Anthony Sato Shows New HCJ Shirt @ GMM

booths, the evening was capped off with a showing
of ‘Iron Man’ on the big screen. The next morning saw the Races start up again,
this time on a smaller scale with just 9 teams.
Early on the morning of June 27th, our HCJ team
arrived and got down to the business of Dragon
Boats.

2009 saw a huge increase in the number of teams

entered. Our team had to deal with over 30 Dragon
Boat teams (!), including 4 who were added on the
night before.

Hickam proposed mixing the 2 teams. Everyone

Following this fun-filled race (filmed by KGMB),

Hickam announced they were ceding the 3rd Place

_____________________________Cosmic Bowling
Events can be significant for a variety of reasons. This one,
though, stood out for the best of reasons. It was chaired by a
new member: Mr. Nicholas Chang!

Under his leadership our chapter decided to try out the

Cosmic Bowling at Aiea Bowl. If rolling a ball down a long span
of wood isn’t challenging enough, just try it in the dark. It’s a
challenge we were up for that evening.

Things got even more interesting when our friends from

Hawaii Kai – Jon & Byron Nakasone and Debbie Au – showed
up with their own bowling gear(!). Including rolling bowling bags.
They were there to play and they found plenty of people ready to see their challenge.

The bowling came hard and fast all night, with HIJC
President Bobby Agpaoa and his friend ‘Ace’ taking high
scores for that initial meet. Still, the highlights were yet to
come in the 2nd game:

• Anthony Sato, coming off the critical list to bowl one

handed with a sling on!

• Sachiko rolling her ball while the pins were still being
set up, then watching in horror as the pin setter
pushed her ball all the way back up the lane!

• Jason Tomita working the lanes like a runway model

By the time we all made our way to our cars it was after Midnight and we all agreed the Nicholas made
a great debut! Mahalo to all who came and made it a great time -
