apan Airlines (JAL)

agreement for up to 56
Airbus long-range aircraft,
marking the national carrier's
rst ever deal with the European
planemaker.
The Tokyo-based airline has
placed a rm order for 18 A350-
900s and 13 A350-1000s, plus
options for a further 25 aircraft.
This continues the company's
long-haul eet expansion and
renewal plan, adding to existing
orders for the Boeing 787
Dreamliner.
The new A350s will enter
service from 2019, and will
gradually replacing JAL's older
twin-aisle aircraft six year
period, including its B767s.
We will utilise the A350
XWB (extra wide-body) to
maximum, which offers high-
level of operational efficiency
and product competitiveness,
while positively catering to new
business opportunities after slots
at airports in Tokyo are increased,
said JAL's president, Yoshiharu
Ueki. In addition to improving
profitability with advanced
aircraft, we always aim to deliver
unparalleled services to customers
with the latest cabin and steady
expansion of our route network.
The A350-900 seats more
than 300 passengers in a typical
three-class layout, while the larger
A35-1000 will carry about 50
more. The firm order of 31 aircraft
is worth more than US$9 billion
at current list prices. The new
aircraft add to JAL's order for up
to 65 Boeing 787 Dreamliners,
11 of which have already been
delivered.
The A350 made its first test
flight this summer and is expected
to enter service in the second
half of 2014. With this latest deal,
Airbus has now taken more than
750 firm orders for the A350 from
38 customers.

Chinese travellers least likely to
switch off study
C
hinese travellers are the
least likely to 'switch o'
while on holiday, a new
study has found.
Research by Accors Pullman
brand, in conjunction with research
institute IPSOS, shows that the
Chinese remain addicted to their
smartphones, with the majority
checking them even while on
vacation.
Seventy-nine percent of Chinese
respondents said they have at
least one professional mobile
device (compared with a global
average of 60%), and during a
week-long holiday, 14% of Chinese
respondents said they spend 1-2
days on their professional devices.
By contrast, only 5% of Australians
allowed work to encroach on their
leisure time so much.
Most global respondents said
they believe it is acceptable to
handle private activities during
work hours, because they also
work when they are at home. But
there are dierences in the types
of personal behaviour that dierent
nationalities think is acceptable.
For example 60% of Chinese
respondents admitted to visiting
dating sites at work, compared to
only 6% of French respondents.
Americans were found to be the
most likely to spend work time
shopping online, with 68% saying
this was a regular activity, while
85% of Chinese research and book
their holidays at work.
On average, 30% of the survey
sample spends at least 30 minutes
a day handling private issues during
working hours.
French and German travellers
are the most resistant to merge
their professional and private lives,
and also have the most negative
opinion of mobile professional
devices. By contrast, the Chinese
are the least likely to switch o
during what should be personal
time - 65% of Chinese respondents
said they check their professional
devices during private meals.

Bali cancels 670 fights to

B
ali's Ngurah Rai International
Airport has been forced to
cancel more than 670 ights due to
the APEC Summit currently being
held on the island. A spokesperson
for the Denpasar airport told the Bali
Daily that the airport's management
had received cancellation plans
from several airlines.
"Around 673 commercial ights
on the regular schedule that should
have operated between October 6
and October 9 have already been
cancelled. There should be 1,378
commercial ights scheduled on
those days," the airport's PR o cer,
Sherly Yunita, was quoted saying.
Garuda Indonesia reported to
have cancelled 162 ights to and
from the island, while AirAsia has
cancelled 86 ights and Lion Air 80.
Bali's airport closed for six
hours on Saturday and 10 hours
of Sunday, with similar restrictions
being implemented on Tuesday
and Wednesday, 8-9 October, as
APEC's leaders arrive and depart
the island.
Iran could resume direct US fights
D
irect ights between the US

authorities in the Middle Eastern
country have suggested. Iran's IRNA
news agency reported the head Civil
Aviation Organisation of Iran, Hamid-
Reza Pahlevani, as saying that the
resumption of direct ights to the US is
on the government's agenda. New York
was cited as a possible destination.
Relations between the US and
Iran have thawed recently, following
a direct telephone call between
Iranian president Hassan Rouhani
and Barack Obama. But the launch
direct ights between the US and
Iran would mark a major diplomatic
breakthrough. Neither country has
own to the other since Iran's Islamic
Revolution in 1979.

Hotheads aims to tackle travel
industry manpower crunch
A
new initiative has been
launched to tackle the issue of
manpower development and drive
creative thinking in the Asian travel
and tourism industry.
Created by former Travel
Daily Media and PATA executive,
Stu Lloyd, Hotheads Innovation
will create a series of training
workshops across Asia for the
hospitality, tourism and airline
industries.
With all the booming forecasts,
the industry in Asia has much to
look forward to, but no one seems to
be tackling the question holistically:
Where are all the extra people going
to come from to y the planes, to
wait the tables, make the beds, and
guide the tourists around? said
Lloyd. Millions of extra people will be
required, yet tourism is not considered
a sexy rst choice vocation.
In an eort to create a solution
to this issue, Lloyd is developing
a series of two-day high-energy
workshops around the region.
These will start in Bangkok on 19-20
November 2013, before moving
on to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore,
Jakarta, Manila, Hong Kong and
Shanghai. The sessions will focus
on developing creative thinking
and innovation, before practicing
those techniques in crowd-sourced
brainstorming sessions, facilitated
by Lloyd. The solutions from each
workshop will then be collated by
Hotheads, with the resulting report
being oered to the industry.
Think of it as a bit of social

Cebu Pacifc to expand Osaka route
C
ebu Pacic Air (CEB) will
expand its operations in Japan
later this year, with the launch
of more direct ights connecting
Manila and Osaka.
The Philippine low-cost carrier

from 20 December 2013 CEB will
add four more weekly services on
the route, taking the total frequency
to daily ights, all using an Airbus
A320 aircraft.
CEB currently oers ights to
22 international destinations, but
the airline said it is condent of
expanding to more cities in Japan,
following recent discussions
between the two countries.
The recently concluded air
talks were very successful and will
denitely pave the way for more
direct linkages between the two
countries. With more ights to the
Philippines, we believe Japan can
rival South Korea when it comes
to foreign tourist arrivals, said
CEB's vice president of marketing
